Easter weekend delivers a footfall boost but store visits dip

The latest footfall data from Sensormatic Solutions, the global retail solutions portfolio of Johnson Controls, has revealed that Easter delivered a weekly boost to footfall in the UK as shoppers splashed out on seasonal treats and entertaining over the four-day Bank holiday weekend.
Data from Sensormatic's ShopperTrak Analytics insights platform, which captures 40 billion store visits globally annually, showed that footfall on Good Friday (April 18) delivered a +40.8 percent week-on-week increase to store visits across all retail destinations.
As retail's second biggest trading event after Christmas, Easter is an important time for retailers, and the Saturday of the long weekend (April 19) also saw footfall rising compared to the week prior, up + 11.6 percent.
Easter Monday also saw total retail footfall rise by +17.4 percent versus the week before, with retail parks seeing the greatest increase, up +27 percent.
However, while Easter delivered a welcome boost to weekly shopper traffic, data from Sensormatic shows that it couldn't match last year's footfall performance, with total store visits declining -7.5 percent over the Easter weekend compared to 2024, which fell earlier from March 24 to 30, 2024.
Andy Sumpter, EMEA retail consultant at Sensormatic Solutions, said in a statement: 'After a slow start to spring for shopper traffic, and the late dates of Easter this year hitting footfall performance in March, retailers will have been counting on a bank holiday boost to over the Easter weekend.
'While they will have welcomed the uptick in shopper traffic compared to the week before, many retailers may have been left feeling disappointed that footfall performance didn't match that of 2024; proof, perhaps, that when it comes to peak trading retail events, you can't put all your eggs in one basket. In light of continuing consumer caution and shaky shopper confidence, retailers need to double down on delivering the compelling 'reasons to visit', which keep shoppers coming back - both to browse and to buy.'

They are set to begin on July 4. Union leader Manuel Fitas of the Grassroots Trade Unionists said the action came as employers were yet to agree on a pay rise for hotel staff. He said the employers had a "stubborn refusal" to discuss salary improvements. Fitas explained that on May 29, they gave employers a fifteen-day deadline to respond to their demand for a 6.5% salary increase before negotiating a new agreement. But employers are yet to come to a new agreement. If confirmed, the nightmare strikes will prove disastrous for thousands of Brit holidaymakers rushing to the popular destination this summer. Planned for every Friday of July and August, the action is set to hit the tourism industry's peak summer season. Brit tourists should expect major disruptions as the unions intend to launch protests right outside the doors of hotels for maximum impact. Each of the scheduled walkouts and protests will be confirmed on June 16 when the dates are locked in place. The action comes after similar anti-tourism strikes have unleashed holiday hell for Brits in the Canary Islands. Brits headed to Tenerife over Easter faced nightmarish conditions as hotel and restaurant workers walked out on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday, after last-ditch talks to prevent the protests failed. "The Canary Islands have a limit" movement argues the Canaries' current economic model is "based on touristification, speculation, inequality and infinite growth in a very limited land". On May 18, thousands of fed-up locals flooded the streets of the Canary Islands in Spain's third wave of protests against overtourism this year. Locals across the Canaries say their home has been turned into a playground for tourists. Demonstrations took place across the Spanish archipelago's islands, including Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. Holidaymakers awkwardly watched from the sidelines as the marches progressed through towns. What is the anti-tourist movement? Locals are calling for three key measures: Tourist moratorium: A freeze on new hotel and holiday rental licences, especially in overcrowded areas, to ease pressure on resources and protect rural and coastal land. Ecotax: A tourist tax to fund public services and offset the environmental impact of mass tourism. Holiday rental regulation: Stricter controls on platforms like Airbnb and real estate speculation to keep housing affordable for residents. Misbehaving Brits visiting the Canary Islands have also fuelled a growing sentiment against tourism among workers in Tenerife. Shocking footage showed two brits starting a vicious brawl in Tenerife while a crowd of yobs cheered them on. Viral footage recorded in Playa de las Américas, a popular resort in the holiday hotspot, showed the men throwing jabs at each other before bystanders started to intervene. And last week, dramatic footage also showed two Brit women scrapping in the streets of Tenerife while being leered at. Both fights sparked fury among locals, who complained of the manic Brit behaviour on their streets.

Marks & Spencer has finally announced that online orders are back up and running following April's cyber attack, meaning shoppers can now shop the new summer collection online - but there's one catch If you've been trying to place an online order with Marks & Spencer recently and found yourself out of luck, you're definitely not alone. M&S has been battling with the fallout from a major cyberattack that hit over the Easter weekend, forcing them to pull the plug on their UK online orders since April 25. But this week brings plenty of good news, as Marks & Spencer has just announced their online orders are back up and running as normal, except for one small caveat. It was revealed that the hack, carried out by a group known as DragonForce (also sometimes called Scattered Spider), exposed customer data like names, addresses, and order histories. Thankfully, card details and passwords stayed safe. Still, it's been a bit of a digital disaster, with even in-store services like contactless payments and click-and-collect being affected. Jayne Wall, operations director for M&S, wrote on the matter a few weeks ago: "To proactively manage the incident, we immediately took steps to protect our systems and engaged leading cyber security experts. We also reported the incident to relevant government authorities and law enforcement, with whom we continue to work closely. Unfortunately, the nature of the incident means that some personal customer data has been taken, but there is no evidence that it has been shared." It's said that the retailer's been losing around £4 million a day in online sales, and while their physical stores are still open, there's been little hope of a confirmed date for when the website will be back in action - until today. M&S has been working closely with cybersecurity experts and has already asked customers to reset their passwords as a precaution. It's clear they have been taking the situation seriously, and now the wait is finally over, as you can return to shopping online at M&S to your heart's content. The small catch? M&S have just warned that due to last month's debacle with online ordering, delivery times are now expected to be longer than Marks & Spencer's shoppers have been used to. It's expected that deliveries may now take up to 10 days. There's been no indication for how long these longer wait times will last, but dedicated M&S lovers will no doubt just be grateful to return to online shopping like old times.
