Thoothukudi (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 16 (ANI): As the whole country celebrates Krishna Janmashtami, over 500 people in the Jambulingapuram village in Tamil Nadu's 'pearl city' Thoothukudi district celebrated the birth of Lord Krishna with bullock cart racing on Saturday. The races, divided into categories of small bullocks and 'poonjeettu' bullocks was held for the first time ever in the village, with 19 pairs of riders and animals participating in the race. The festival committee has also confirmed that the race will be an annual affair on every Krishna Janmashtami. The villagers also expressed happiness over the race, with the new spectacle attracting crowds of over 500 people, eager to watch the spectacle for the first time. At the end of the competition, prizes were given to the winning bullock cart and its drivers.Lord Krishna's birthday falls on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad. Although the celebration takes place in different parts of the country, Mathura and Vrindavan hold a special significance. One being his birthplace, and one where he spent his childhood and did his baal leela.Devotees flock to the Lord Krishna temples, especially the Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan and the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple in Mathura. The temples were decorated with flowers and crystal chandeliers, and the idol of Lord Krishna was decorated with colourful clothes and jewellery.Earlier in January 2024, Vaippar village in Thoothukudi also held a bullock cart race on the 265th birth anniversary of Veerapandiya Kattabomman. The event is carried out in the village every year. Winners of the bullock cart races were showered with prizes of Rs 1 lakh cash, lambs, and LED TV. The event gathered a crowd who watched the Bullock cart race with interest. Many pairs of bullock carts from various parts of Tamil Nadu, like Nellai, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Theni, and Virudhunagar, became a part of this event at the Vaipar ECR (East Coast Road).The competition was held in 3 categories – big bullock cart, small bullock cart and poonjittu. Following this, the owners of the bullock carts and the drivers who won the competition were honoured with prizes.At midnight, a special ritual is performed when the idol of Lord Krishna is bathed in milk, yoghurt, honey, ghee, and water. During the Krishna Abhishek, bells are rung, conch shells are blown, and Vedic hymns are performed. (ANI)

Grand celebrations were also held at different places, including the ISKCON temple, reserve police lines, police stations, villages, and blocks of the district. At the Prayagraj reserve police line, thousands of devotees of all age groups thronged the Radha Krishna temple to offer prayers and enjoyed the fair organised on the police lines ground. Heavy police bandobast was made for the devotees. Devotees continued to throng the temples from early evening hours, and the flow of devotees continued until midnight. Janmashtami was also celebrated with full pomp and show at Fatehpur, Kaushambi, and Pratapgarh reserve police lines. Scores of devotees on Saturday thronged the city-based prominent Radha and Krishna temples amid the blowing of conch shells and chanting of vedic hymns . Devotees also burst crackers at midnight to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. Devotees also decorated their temples at home and invited guests to celebrate the day. Religious scholar, Dr Amitabh Gour, said, "Krishna Janmashtami, considered to be the prominent festival of Hindus, was celebrated with full religious fervour across the world. As Lord Krishna was born on this sacred day, devotees performed special puja, observed fast, and also gathered during the day to worship the deity, and singing bhajans and keertans to celebrate the festival. " Many devotees decorated tableaux of Lord Krishna's leela at their respective homes and prepared delicious food dishes, including prasad, on the occasion. Various tableaux depicting scenes from the life of Krishna were also showcased, including scenes of contemporary events. Varanasi: Following the midnight rituals of Lord Krishna's birth, devotees thronged Kashi Vishwanath temple in the early hours of Sunday to seek blessings of Laddu Gopal (the child form of Krishna) along with Lord Vishwanath. Apart from Kashi Vishwanath, the festival was celebrated with grandeur at several other temples, in Banaras Hindu University, police lines, police stations, and even the fire brigade office. At KV Dham, the celebration began late on Saturday night in the presence of senior priests, scholars, and officials, including CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra. The birth rituals of Laddu Gopal were performed with devotion, accompanied by continuous chanting of mantras, consecrated offerings, and distribution of prasadam. In the early hours of Sunday, the idol of Laddu Gopal was taken inside the sanctum sanctorum for the Mangala Aarti. Thereafter, devotees were able to have darshan of both Lord Vishweshwar and Laddu Gopal together, an event that added to the spiritual significance of the festival. The festive spirit was visible across the city. At police lines and police stations, tableaux depicting scenes from Krishna's life were put on display. Iskcon temple also witnessed large gatherings of devotees who participated in kirtans and rituals. On the BHU campus, students across hostels celebrated the occasion with enthusiasm. Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Triveni Women Hostel, Ruiya Hostel, and New PG Girls Hostel echoed with devotional songs and chants of 'Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki'. Kolhapur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday handed over keys to the first residents of the Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Police Sankul, a new housing complex in Kolhapur. Developed by the Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation at a cost of Rs 34 crore, the project is located in Juna Budgwar Peth. It features 168 new 2-BHK apartments, each measuring 538 square feet, spread across three seven-story buildings.
