Motherwell 1, Hertha Berlin 1: Stamatelopoulos strike forces draw
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos was the hero as Motherwell forced a draw against 2 Bundesliga giants Hertha Berlin at Fir Park in their final warm-up match of the summer before hosting Rangers here next Saturday.
A Fabian Reese penalty looked like being enough to separate the sides, before Stamatelopoulos struck late on for the Steelmen.
Motherwell had a few forays forward early in the first half, but Hertha took the lead from the spot in nine minutes and dominated the rest of the 45, but without overly testing keeper Callum Ward.
Ward's foul on Jon Thorsteinsson as he darted onto a clumsy pass-back was what led to Reese opening the scoring, and the Germans never really looked back.
Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou said this game would give Motherwell a test similar to that which they'll face against the Ibrox side in eight days' time, so it will have been job done.
But Motherwell didn't really pose a threat in the first half, which will have concerned the Dane.
The second half was much the same, though Motherwell grew into the game more, as Apostolos Stamatelopoulos had a couple of flurries up front, and Lukas Fadinger had their first serious shot on target in 75 minutes.
And it was left to Stamatelopoulos to squeeze a shot in at the right post corner with seven minutes left.
Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou kept with the same line-up as their 3-0 win over Morton on Tuesday, and again there was no place in the squad for Lennon Miller, amid mounting speculation. Good news for Well fans was the emergence of goalkeeper Aston Oxborough to the bench, following his pre-season injury.
Motherwell carved the first opening in six minutes, but Elliot Watt saw his shot deflected over.
But Hertha were awarded a penalty when a clumsy pass-back left goalkeeper Callum Ward with a decision to make, and he upended Jon Thorsteinsson, with referee Nick Walsh immediately pointing to the spot.
Reese stepped up and confidently dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom right corner.
That sent the German side flying and Reese was only denied his second of the game moments later by a brilliant defensive block.
Maurice Krattenmacher was sent through on goal by Tjark Ernst's kick-out in 25 minutes, but a well-timed challenge by Paul McGinn shepherded the ball safely back to Watt.
Marton Dardai nearly scored direct from a corner on the right in 34 minutes, with Ward forced to claw it out from under his bar.
A neat passing move in 41 minutes ended with Reese's rising shot being well saved by Ward.
Deyo Zeefuik's header was well saved from a Diego Demme free kick inside first-half stoppage time.
Thorsteinsson should have doubled Hertha's lead in 54 minutes when he was sent through on the left, but fired a low shot inches past the near post.
Oxborough replaced Ward on the hour, but didn't have an awful lot to do.
Fadinger had a low shot well saved by Ernst in 75 minutes as Motherwell tried to get back into the game.
But Motherwell levelled in 83 minutes when Slattery's cross from the right was squeezed in at the near post by Stamtelopoulos.
MOTHERWELL: Ward (Oxborough, 60), Koutroumbis (O'Donnell, 78), McGinn, Gordon, Longelo, Watt (Halliday, 71), Slattery, Fadinger, Maswanhise, Just (Said, 71), Stamatelopoulos

Schoolboy who quit football after 'vile, racist abuse' returns to sport
Haaris Arshad was left in tears and refused to return after he was allegedly called the "P-word" by a group who "punched", "pushed", and "taunted" shortly after arriving for the two-day Motherwell FC course. A Scots boy who was allegedly called the "P-word" in vile racist physical and verbal assault at a youth Motherwell FC training camp run has made a spectacular return to football. On Wednesday April 18, Haaris Arshad had been "buzzing" to attend the event at Fir Park Stadium alongside his cousin, Ben Reynolds. However, the then eight-year-old was left in tears and refused to return after the two schoolboys were allegedly called the " P-word" and were told to "go home" by another group while both were "punched", "pushed", and "taunted" shortly after arriving for the two-day course. Dad Wasim Arshad, said at the time: "My son is football daft - he absolutely loves it and never misses a day's training. But since this, he hasn't been able to go back to training." Following the incident, Wasim had a meeting with the CEO of Motherwell who tried to persuade him to come back to the training session, but the youngster "wasn't interested" and stopped playing football all together for two weeks. Wasim told Glasgow Live: "He decided he didn't want anything to do with football for two weeks. It really hit his confidence. "But one of his coaches came round to the house with new goalkeeping gloves that the entire team had chipped in to buy for him. He decided to go back, but he was very nervous and worried that people were going to call him names." Haaris, now aged nine, returned to playing for Blantyre Celtic, but the season ended shortly after. But the youngster turned heads in his first tournament back for the side on Sunday, July 27, being named the best player. Proud dad Wasim said: "It was an amazing achievement for him, especially because he is a goalkeeper. Parents and coaches were coming up to me and saying how well he was playing. "One of the main coaches said he played at a very high level for his age and made some phenomenal saves. As a father, it makes you really proud. "It was incredible how, through his own hard work and support from his teammates, he's gone from wanting to quit football to winning an award. Especially being a goalkeeper, these things usually go to strikers." The young Celtic fan has set his sights on playing for the Parkhead side one day. Wasim added: "He's got the talent for it. In a few years I could see the big clubs being interested in him. It's something he wants to pursue and we are supporting him towards that. You never know what can happen." A spokesperson for Motherwell FC said at the time: "We are aware of an alleged incident that took place at one of the Club's charity partners, Motherwell Football Club Community Trust's Easter Holiday Camps. "An allegation was made after the conclusion to the holiday camp on Wednesday that a young child had used racial language towards another child participant. " Motherwell FC Community Trust have a zero tolerance to any discriminatory language and have reported the alleged incident to 'Show Racism the Red card' and Police Scotland who have both confirmed that the Trust have followed all the correct procedures following this allegation. "A meeting has been set up with the affected parent. No further comment will be made at this time." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Man Utd step up Ollie Watkins transfer as Aston Villa star becomes No.1 striker target
Manchester United have already bolstered their attack with the summer captures of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo but Ruben Amorim and Co still want to sign a new No 9 Manchester United are stepping up their bid to sign a striker before the start of the new season – with Ollie Watkins now their first-choice target. United boss Ruben Amorim wants a proven goalscorer to lead his side's attack, with Aston Villa and England striker Watkins seen as the ideal choice to fill the role. This summer United have adopted a policy of signing players with Premier League experience, as evidenced by the recruitment of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. United are continuing that strategy with a move for Watkins, but are understood to be unwilling to meet Villa's £60million valuation of the 29-year-old. There is hope among the United hierarchy that a compromise figure of £40m-£45m for Watkins can be reached with Villa and enable a deal to be struck between the two clubs. Watkins scored 17 goals last season, 16 in the Premier League, with Amorim wanting a striker who can go straight into United's team and start scoring regularly, without needing time to adapt. As well as Watkins, United are keeping tabs on RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, but the Bundesliga club want around £70m for him and Newcastle are in pole position to sign the 22-year-old Slovenian. United are exploring the possibility of deals for Watkins and Sesko, but a move for Nicolas Jackson has been ruled out due to Chelsea 's £80million asking price for him. While Amorim is keen to get a new striker signed as quickly as possible to give him time to settle in and build up an understanding with his new team-mates, he accepts that negotiations could drag on. In order to fund a move for a striker, United must raise revenue from player sales, with the double sale of Alejandro Garnacho and Antony – both left out of the US tour squad - enough to cover the cost of a new front man. United are also trying to offload Jadon Sancho and Tyrrell Malacia, who joined Garnacho and Antony in being left behind by Amorim, while Marcus Rashford 's loan move to Barcelona has saved around £12m, with the Spanish giants covering his wages for the whole of next season. United's determination to sign a new striker casts doubt over the future of Rasmus Hojlund, who struggled last season, scoring just 10 goals from 52 appearances in all competitions. Villa sources insist Watkins is not for sale, but they wanted £60m from Arsenal in January, before changing their stance when Jhon Duran left to join Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr.

'Man Utd wanted me but signed Rasmus Hojlund instead - now I could replace him'
Manchester United have been linked with a familiar striker target this summer, who the club overlooked in favour of signing Rasmus Hojlund in 2023 Manchester United have been linked with a fresh move for PSG star Randal Kolo Muani, having previously targeted the forward in 2023. The club ultimately opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund ahead of Kolo Muani that summer, but the France international looks to be available once again. United were enticed by Hojlund's long-term potential, having impressed during his time at Atalanta, resulting in an eye-catching £72million move to Old Trafford. After a slow start, the young Dane ended his debut season with 16 goals in all competitions, but he found the net on just 10 occasions last term. As United work on improving their frontline through the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, Ruben Amorim's side have also been linked with a new number nine. Kolo Muani may have been snubbed in favour of Hojlund two years ago, but reports in Italy have claimed that United are targeting the PSG forward, who spent time on loan at Juventus last season. Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that United have entered the race to sign Kolo Muani. The France international completed an initial £65m (€75m) move to PSG in 2023 following a prolific spell at Eintracht Frankfurt, which had also caught United's attention. The 26-year-old has since struggled to cement his place at the French club but showed signs of his best form during his Juventus loan spell, scoring 10 goals in 22 games. Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Kolo Muani remains a top target for Juventus and discussions with PSG are ongoing, but United are also pursuing the forward. It is reported that United's interest in Kolo Munai, who is claimed to favour a return to Turin, has become more concrete since missing out on Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal. Meanwhile, PSG are keen to complete a permanent sale for the forward, though Juventus are said to have proposed a £8.6m (€10m) loan fee ahead of a future £39m (€45m) deal. However, if United succeed in snapping up Juventus target Kolo Muani, it could have a knock-on effect for Hojlund. Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Kolo Muani heading to Old Trafford would lead Juventus to have an interest in signing Hojlund on loan. Hojlund does have Serie A experience from his sole season with Atalanta. The 22-year-old scored nine league goals for the Bergamo club before sealing his big-money move to United. The potential arrival of Kolo Muani would threaten Hojlund's place in the pecking order. He is already competing with Joshua Zirkzee and youngster Chido Obi for a starting spot, while new signings Cunha and Mbeumo could also be viewed as alternative centre-forwards. Kolo Muani is in need of a fresh start, as it recently emerged that he has been made to train with the youth team as PSG looks to offload the forward. If a move fails to materialise this summer, he faces the unenviable task of competing with PSG's Champions League-winning attack for game time. United have also been linked with moves for Aston Villa 's Ollie Watkins and Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic. However, United boss Amorim recently played down the team's need for new signings. "In the moment we need to be careful when we sign a player,' Amorim explained. 'If I start the season with this squad I will be happy." He added: "You feel the bond between the players in the best teams. We remind ourself how special it is to be at the best club in the world. I really like to be in a group that is healthy. We are going to suffer but that feeling of bonding is really important. The spirit is positive."
