Automattic acquires relationship manager Clay to add an identity layer to online tools

After acquiring universal messaging apps Beeper and Texts.com, WordPress.com owner Automattic has added another communication-focused startup to its lineup: relationship-management app Clay.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Clay had so far raised over $9 million in venture capital from investors like General Catalyst and Forerunner Ventures. The tool will continue to be supported and will later be integrated with other Automattic products, like Beeper.
Clay's software, launched in 2021, is something of a smarter address book or personal CRM, letting users organize the people they know and keep up with their latest updates by pulling in data from services like LinkedIn, Facebook, WhatsApp and X, as well as address books and calendars.

You can use the app to keep up with things you want to know about people, like job changes, relocations, updated bios, recent social posts, and more. Clay also lets you add notes to address book entries, so you can note how and when you met, or the names of their kids, for instance. A timeline for each entry shows when notes were added, the last time you reached out, and other times you engaged.
The app later built in AI, adding an AI helper called Nexus that lets you ask questions about your network, like who you know at a particular company, or who you should connect with when visiting New York. Beyond that, the AI bot is meant to integrate with your daily workflow.
As part of the acquisition, which closed last week, Clay's small team, including its co-founders Zachary Hamed and Matthew Achariam, is joining Automattic.
'Our mission […] is to help with relationships and increase conscientiousness,' Achariam said. 'That's always been our North Star, and all the features […] reinforce that by bringing these different aspects of relationship management into one platform and one tool.'

Automattic said it made sense to buy Clay because of its ability to be integrated into the company's broader ecosystem, which today includes the universal chat app Beeper (a merger of the Texts.com and Beeper acquisitions).
Clay's founders, meanwhile, have a sense of a shared mission with Automattic, and appreciate that they'll get to continue to develop their app. (Often, smart address book startups are eaten up by their acquirer and then sadly wound down.)
'We are very excited about the longevity aspect of this,' said Hamed. 'We believe that this should be something that exists beyond, like, any one company,' he added.
For Clay, the long-term plan at Automattic includes integrating with Beeper, and ultimately becoming an identity layer for a variety of different tools.
Those plans are not finalized, however, nor could Automattic commit to a time frame for that progress. It also wouldn't share if Clay's pricing is due to change in the future. Currently, the service is a freemium offering, with its paid plans starting at $10 per month, or $40 per seat, per month for teams.
Clay's founders said they believe their values are similar to Automattic's, which is why the deal made sense.
'One of their main ethos is this idea of open source, and the idea that that's one of the most powerful forces of our lifetimes. And we tend to agree,' said Achariam.
Clay's team is also interested in integrating with other open technologies going forward, like ActivityPub, used by Mastodon, and AT Protocol, used by Bluesky.
Clay didn't share any numbers about its userbase, but it did say that its app manages over 150 million relationships. The app is available on macOS, Windows, iOS, and web.

Dollar drifts, Asian stocks mixed as markets brace for Jackson Hole

By Kevin Buckland TOKYO (Reuters) -The U.S. dollar hovered below a one-week high on Thursday and Asian stock markets were broadly mixed as investors braced for three days of potentially market-moving news from the Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole. Central bankers from around the world will attend the event, which begins later in the day, although the key focus will be Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech on Friday as traders look for clues on the chances of a September rate cut. Japan's Nikkei drooped 0.6% in the morning session, retreating further from the record peak reached on Tuesday. Despite a tech-led selloff on Wall Street overnight, Japanese chip stocks were a mixed bag, with Advantest up 3% while Tokyo Electron dropped 2%. South Korea's KOSPI bounced 0.9% after dipping to a six-week low on Wednesday. Australia's benchmark gained 0.6% and renewed an all-time high. Mainland Chinese blue chips gained 0.5%, although Hong Kong's Hang Seng was largely flat. U.S. stock futures pointed lower, with Nasdaq futures sagging 0.2% and S&P 500 futures easing 0.1%. Overnight, the Nasdaq Composite slid 0.7% and the S&P 500 cash index slipped 0.2%. [.N] "There remains a bearish skew for equities at the moment," said Kyle Rodda, an analyst at "Equity prices are beginning to reflect the risk of disappointment at Jackson Hole, with doubts circulating about whether the Fed will pivot as aggressively in the dovish direction implied by rates markets - or even pivot at all." Traders currently lay odds of about 80% for a quarter-point Fed rate cut on September 17, and price in a total of 52 basis points of easing over the rest of the year. This time on Wednesday, the odds for a cut next month stood at 84%. Fed Chair Powell has said he is reluctant to cut rates because of expected tariff-driven price pressures this summer. Minutes out overnight from the Fed's July gathering, when policymakers voted to keep rates steady, suggested that Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman and Governor Christopher Waller were alone in pushing for a rate cut at the meeting. Traders ramped up bets for a September cut following a surprisingly weak payrolls report at the start of this month, and were further encouraged after consumer price data showed limited upward pressure from tariffs. However, a hotter-than-expected producer price reading last week complicated the policy picture. Traders aren't looking at macroeconomic data as the only potential influencer of monetary policy direction, with President Donald Trump again exerting pressure on the central bank overnight. After continuing his attacks on Powell earlier in the week for refraining from cutting rates, Trump on Wednesday targeted Fed Governor Lisa Cook, demanding she resign amid allegations of wrongdoing connected to mortgages on properties she owns in Georgia and Michigan. Cook said she had "no intention of being bullied to step down". Trump's push for more control over the Fed unnerved investors earlier in the year, sending the dollar tumbling. The currency has largely taken the latest developments in stride though, and the dollar index was steady at 98.252 on Thursday, after grinding to the highest since August 12 at 98.441 a day earlier. "The broader implication is rising tensions between the Fed and the U.S. administration," said Rodrigo Catril, a strategist at National Australia Bank. "Trump's push to confirm Stephen Miran could add another vote for cuts in September, and if he was to successfully remove Cook, the Fed Board could end up with four members out of seven supporting his lower rates call." Trump nominated Council of Economic Advisers Chair Miran as a Fed governor earlier this month, following the surprise resignation of Adriana Kugler. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields were steady at 4.2965% in the latest session. Japanese government bond yields edged higher though, with the 20-year yield advancing to 2.655% for the first time since late 1999. Among other things, investors are wary of increased fiscal spending amid growing pressure for the Japanese prime minister to step down. The dollar traded little changed at 147.41 yen. The euro and sterling were flat at $1.1647 and $1.3458, respectively. Bitcoin continued to claw its way back from a 2-1/2-week low reached Wednesday at $112,386.93, edging up to around $114,690. Gold eased slightly to around $3,342 per ounce. Oil prices edged higher as larger-than-expected declines in crude oil and fuel inventories in the U.S. supported expectations for steady demand. Brent crude futures were up 0.5% to $67.19 a barrel, after gaining 1.6% in the previous session. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 0.6% to $63.10, after climbing 1.4% on Wednesday. Google Pixel 10 hands on: Pro experience without the Pro price

There are two types of flagship phone users out there. The first kind are considered early adopters because they're always interested in the latest and greatest features, whether it be in cameras, battery, performance, or display. Then there's the second kind, who values the latest features and specifications, but is also conscious about the price. If you're in the latter group, you'll find your options fit into two distinct categories, judged by the number of smartphone cameras. On the one hand, the Galaxy S25 and OnePlus 13 are both priced at between $800 and $1000, and feature three cameras complete with strong zoom performance. Recommended Videos Then there's the other category for phones with two cameras, commonly associated with the entry-level iPhone 16 and prior. Another key competitor in this category is last year's Google Pixel 9, and today Google unveiled its successor, the Google Pixel 10, in New York. There are many changes, but the biggest is clear: the first telephoto lens on a base Pixel. I went hands-on with the Pixel 10 for half an hour earlier today, and one thing became apparent almost immediately: this could make the Pixel 10 one of the best value-for-money phones you can buy. Here's why. One more camera makes all the difference The Pixel 10 marks a significant shift for Google, moving from competing with the dual-camera-wielding iPhone 16 to the triple-camera-toting Galaxy S25. On paper, the new telephoto lens is the only change, but the changes in the Pixel 10 camera extend much further. The main camera drops slightly from a 50MP sensor in the Pixel 9 to the 48MP wide sensor in the Pixel 10 with the same f/1.7 aperture and 25mm focal length. Then there's the ultra-wide camera, which drops from a 48MP sensor with f/1.7 aperture to a smaller 12MP sensor. This drop in the ultra-wide is almost certainly due to the new telephoto, and the Pixel 10 features the same 10.8MP telephoto lens found in the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This sensor delivers 5x optical zoom, but lacks the Pro Res Zoom feature for up to 100x zoom that's found in the Pixel 10 Pro series with the same telephoto camera. Despite the other changes to the camera, the new telephoto lens on the Pixel 10 is a welcome improvement for anyone who's buying a phone at this price point. Yes, the rest of the camera has some downgrades, but three cameras and a strong telephoto would likely appeal more to customers than two better lenses. A new era for the Tensor processor The Pixel 10 also sees the launch of the Tensor G5, the fifth-generation processor designed by Google. This change also marks a watershed moment, as Google has switched from Samsung Foundry to the world's largest chipmaker, TSMC. The Tensor G5 is built on TSMC's 3nm process, which is the same architecture used in rival flagship chipsets powering phones like the iPhone 16 Pro, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Fold 7. The shift to the 3nm process brings a host of improvements for Google to take advantage of, specifically when it comes to AI performance. The Tensor G5 is paired with 12GB of RAM. Google says the Tensor G5 offers deeper customization and is custom-built to support the latest advancements in AI. The Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) is 60% more powerful, ensuring much faster performance in machine learning and on-device AI. The Tensor G5 also features a 34% faster CPU as well as an upgraded ISP for better camera performance. Bigger battery and better charging Like the rest of the Pixel 10 lineup, Google has made the battery slightly larger at 4,970 mAh. Unlike the Google Pixel 9a — which features the largest battery in a Pixel at 5,100 mAh — the Pixel 10 is only slightly larger than the Pixel 9. Battery life was a strong part of the Pixel 9 experience last year, and the larger battery should ensure this continues this year. However, the Tensor G5 consumes more power, so there shouldn't be a significant increase in overall battery life. There have also been improvements to charging. The Pixel 10 charging speeds jump from 27W to 29W, which Google says can charge the phone up to 55% in around 30 minutes, when used with a 30W charger. Like most phones, there's no charging brick in the box. The biggest change in the battery this year is the addition of Qi2 magnetic wireless charging. Dubbed PixelSnap, the feature allows the Pixel 10 to charge wirelessly at up to 15W using a MagSafe-compatible charger. The Pixel 10 is the first Android phone to feature this built-in; while Samsung ensures the best Samsung phones are Qi2-compatible, they require an additional case to take advantage of the feature. Software is Google's strong point… yet again As you might expect, the Pixel 10 runs Android 16, the latest version of Android, out of the box alongside Google's Material 3 Expressive UI. The Pixel 10 is also backed by seven years of software and security updates, meaning it should be supported to at least Android 23. Beyond the core platform, the Pixel 10 also comes equipped with several new AI features as part of Gemini, and some of these are set to be exclusive to the Pixel range. First, there's Magic Cue, which leverages the Tensor G5 processor and Google's Gemini Nano model for real-time processing of your usage to enable contextual suggestions. These suggestions can include adding events to the calendar, previewing weather forecasts, or settling a bill, with Google set to expand this feature considerably over the coming months. One particular point of note is that Magic Cue is designed to surface suggestions that Google thinks you need before you need to ask for them. As such, the more you use the Pixel 10, the better the training of the models; as a result, suggestions should become far more accurate and frequent as you use your phone. There is also a wide range of other changes throughout the OS. Google's Veo 3 model is now available on phones, while a new Daily Hub provides a daily digest that's similar to Now Brief on the Galaxy S25. There are also improvements to Call Screening and a new addition to voice calls, with the Pixel 10 able to translate your call in real-time. The Pixel 10 proves that affordable doesn't mean compromises The Pixel 9 was one of the best phones last year, and the myriad of changes in the Pixel 10 mean it goes further than just picking up the mantle; starting at $799, the Pixel 10 is likely to be the best $800 phone that you can buy. Like the Google Pixel 9a and prior, the Pixel 10 proves that affordable doesn't have to mean big compromises, and while there are some lesser specs compared to the Pixel 9, the Pixel 10 is a more complete all-around phone for most people. There's one big thing to also keep in mind: Google has followed Apple's lead, and the Pixel 10 is eSIM-only in the US, meaning it doesn't come with a physical SIM card tray like the iPhone 16 series. It's a shame that Google has gone eSIM-only, but it does feel inevitable that the industry as a whole will eventually follow. Google Pixel 10 price and availability The Pixel 10 is available to pre-order starting at $799, which comes with 128GB of storage. Pre-orders open today (August 20) ahead of the release date on August 28. If you want additional storage, you can double the storage for a $100 premium, but 256GB is the largest available storage capacity. The Pixel 10 series comes in four distinct colors: Obsidian, Frost, Lemongrass, and Indigo. The latter is my favorite color, but Lemongrass is also a beautiful shade of green. This might be Google's best color lineup as all four colors look fantastic in person.

Nasdaq Boots Windtree a Month After $700M BNB Treasury Pivot Fails to Lift Stock

Windtree Therapeutics, a Pennsylvania-based drug developer, is being delisted from Nasdaq, just over a month after its $700 million pivot into a digital treasury firm focused on Binance's BNB token failed to boost its stock above the exchange's requirements. In an SEC filing published Tuesday, Windtree confirmed trading of its stock on Nasdaq would be suspended at the open on Thursday, August 21, for failing to maintain the $1-per-share minimum bid price. Windtree shares are down 77% on the day to just $0.11. Windtree listed its stock on Nasdaq in May 2020 but has repeatedly struggled to meet listing standards. The exchange moved to suspend Windtree's shares after several bid-price violations since at least June 2022, according to a 2023 SEC filing. Its third and most recent deficiency warning was handed down in December last year. Windtree and Nasdaq did not immediately return Decrypt's request for comment. Late last month, Windtree announced that it would commit and buy up to $700 million in Binance's BNB token, just a day after that crypto hit a new all-time high. Trump Family-Backed Thumzup to Acquire Dogecoin Mining Company While Windtree briefly regained its compliance earlier in March this year, it later lost course as a turbulent pullback in the crypto market began rolling over the past week. Several publicly-listed treasury companies' shares have been diving or slowing in lockstep, including stock from KindlyMD, SharpLink, Coinbase, and Strategy, which hit a 4-month low on Wednesday amid a broader crypto stock slump. As a result of the suspension, the company is moving to the over-the-counter market under the same ticker, WINT. Unlike Nasdaq, which imposes strict listing standards such as minimum bid prices and equity thresholds, OTC venues operate with looser requirements and typically provide less liquidity and visibility. Ethereum Treasury Companies Could Buy 10% of All ETH: Standard Chartered "Distressed firms face a structural mismatch with DAT models,' Ryan Yoon, senior analyst at Tiger Research, told Decrypt. 'While they may initially raise funds despite lacking credibility, subsequent capital raises become increasingly difficult as market skepticism grows." Digital asset treasuries rely on "premium-based funding, but struggling companies can't sustain NAV premiums long-term," Yoon said. Net asset value, or NAV, is the total value of a company's assets minus its liabilities, expressed on a per-share basis. It shows whether a company's stock price is higher or lower than the value of its total assets, including those that aren't from digital assets. "This creates a reverse flywheel during market downturns: asset decline → forced liquidation → further decline," Yoon explained. For one, Yoon points to Michael Saylor's Strategy as having a "powerful narrative in crypto markets" that has created "a template that struggling public companies attempt to replicate." Yet "unlike established DAT firms with operational frameworks," financially struggling companies suddenly pivoting to become digital asset treasury firms "typically lack substance beyond the narrative itself," Yoon said.
