Murder and mystery: A chilling timeline of Jayden-Lee Meek's death
The case that has gripped South Africa continues in the Roodepoort Magistrates' Court on Friday, 18 July.
Tiffany Meek, the mother of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee, stands accused of his brutal murder. The case has sparked national outrage and uproar over child protection.
Here is a timeline of the events that led to Meek's arrest.
Jayden-Lee was reported missing on 13 May, two days after Mother's Day. His mother claimed he had not returned home from school, despite his transport having dropped him off at their Fleurhof residence.
With the assistance of the Florida Community Policing Forum (CPF) and residents, Jayden-Lee was later found on the staircase of the apartment building. Thereafter, he was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Community members expressed outrage over the delay in police action. They called for police to work faster to ensure justice was served.
On Friday, 11 July, Tiffany was arrested following extensive investigations by Florida detectives, with support from the Provincial Investigative Unit and Tracking Team. https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid034XATKNs62Yyf9dyZ6wZFmx1h2q65deiD45TC6cFsXdEfFi94YKG69KF1TH2m7vNjl&id=100064382811384
Tiffany appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrates' Court on 14 July, facing charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice, crimen injuria, and obstructing the course of justice.
Speaking outside court, Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo said it is not an easy case. She commented on the community backlash about the time it took to ensure a breakthrough, saying it was necessary for a thorough investigation.
Boshielo did not rule out the possibility of more arrests.
An investigator close to the case revealed disturbing details from the crime scene, including attempts to clean up blood. He alleged that the child was beaten severely and was hidden under blankets on his bed.
He also claimed that someone had tampered with evidence in the home. Describing the crime scene as gruesome, he further stated that the murderer attempted to clean the blood from the flat with bleach. However, the blood was still discovered under UV light.
Despite the chilling details, Jayden-Lee's grandmother defended her daughter.
In a tearful video, Tiffany's mother, Debbie Dunn, the family and slammed the arrest and expressed a loss of faith in the state.
HOW DOES THE TRAGIC DEATH OF JAYDEN-LEE MEEK EXPOSE THE HIDDEN CRISIS OF CHILD ABUSE IN OUR COMMUNITIES?

Police captain commits suicide after killing girlfriend and her brother
Gauteng police have opened an inquest docket in Protea after a police captain committed suicide after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and her brother. The incident happened in Protea, Soweto, on Saturday night, 26 July. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Gauteng, colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said it is alleged that the group was at home celebrating the birthday of the captain's girlfriend, who is also a police officer. 'The captain reportedly called the girlfriend to the side, and that is when people saw him draw a firearm, and shoot her and her brother dead while three other civilians sustained injuries. He then turned the gun on himself,' Nevhuhulwi explained. Two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and an inquest docket were opened at Protea police station for further investigation. Meanwhile Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni expressed his sadness at this incident and sent his heartfelt condolences to the affected families. 'We give our members these tools to protect themselves against criminals, so it is very disheartening to see the very same tools being used to kill their loved ones. I urge our members to make use of employee health and wellness facilities to assist them to deal with any problems they may be facing, whether work or personal, EHW is always there', Mthombeni said. Recently, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) called on the SAPS to strengthen its mental health and wellness support programmes for officers, following a tragic incident involving one of its own. A female police constable, Ntombethemba Mgidi, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court on Monday, 22 July, after being arrested in connection with the fatal shootings of two fellow officers in the Mbayimbayi area near Murchison on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast last week. Both victims later died from their injuries at Murchison Hospital. 'This act of violence highlights the urgent need for SAPS to intensify internal wellness and psychological support programmes that help members manage relational and emotional pressures,' said POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo. Joburg council has 'no jurisdiction over Kunene, it's a police matter' Morero
Kunene's resignation came after the PA deputy leader was seen at the home of Katiso 'KT' Molefe. Former MMC of transport, Kenny Kunene during the War On Potholes campaign launch at Ward 90, Hyde Park on 10 July 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Picture: Gallo Images/Sharon Seretlo City of Johannesburg executive mayor Dada Morero says the city's council no longer has jurisdiction over former transport MMC Kenny Kunene, now that he has resigned, and that it has become a 'police matter.' The suspended Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president resigned as a councillor in the city of Johannesburg with immediate effect on Saturday. Resignation Kunene's resignation came after the PA deputy leader was seen at the home of Katiso 'KT' Molefe, who has been arrested in connection with the murder of popular South African DJ Oupa John Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody. His presence at the scene raised eyebrows, prompting PA leader Gayton McKenzie to suspend him as the party's deputy president and MMC for transport in Johannesburg. 'Police matter' Morero said it's now up to the police to investigate the matter. 'Council works quite differently. He has resigned as a counsellor, meaning he's no longer part of council, and council, therefore does not have jurisdiction over him in terms of our own code of conduct as councillors. 'It's a matter for the police and his party to investigate the matter of his being in the place of the guy who is alleged to have been involved in criminal activity. So it's not our matter, it's a police matter, and it's a matter of the party. With us, he has given us a resignation, so the council has therefore officially released him as a councillor,' Morero said. City of Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero says that there is nothing the Council can do regarding Patriotic Alliance's Kenny Kunene's conduct now that he has resigned. 'It is now a police matter,' he says. #SouthAfricaTonight #DStv403 #QuestionThinkAct — eNCA (@eNCA) July 26, 2025 ALSO READ: McKenzie suspends Kunene amid DJ Sumbody murder probe [VIDEO] Allegations Kunene insisted the allegations against him were 'unfounded'. Kunene said he is proud of the contributions he made during his time as councillor and MMC. The PA will now have to consider a replacement for Kunene's now-vacant seat on the Johannesburg city council. In an explosive revelation this week, Kunene confirmed that he was at Molefe's house when police arrived to arrest the suspected killer. Kunene claims he was at Molefe's house to facilitate a meeting for a journalist from his online publication, Africa Global News, for a 'potential exclusive story'. DJ Sumbody was killed in Woodmead in a hail of bullets in the early hours of Sunday, 20 November 2022. ALSO READ: DJ Sumbody's family welcomes the arrests of suspects and thanks police
