Man Utd and Barcelona on red alert after Emi Martinez leaves Villa exit hint

Daily Mirror19-05-2025

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has been linked with a summer move away from Villa Park and their could be a bidding war for the World Cup winning goalkeeper
Emi Martinez's uncertain Aston Villa future has left Manchester United and Barcelona exploring a move, it has been claimed. Martinez has been the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League, but could yet end up staying in Europe.
The Argentina number one was visibly emotional at the end of Villa's final home game of the season, a victory over Tottenham, as was Saudi-linked team-mate Leon Bailey. Manager Unai Emery wasn't able to confirm the keeper would be staying, sparking plenty of speculation.

'Of course, it is the last match (of the season) here, and I don't know,' Emery said after the 2-0 win. "We will see about the team, the players, but of course, they are responding on the field, at the moment they are responding and they are so, so focused in how we are preparing and playing each match.

'Of course, Leon Bailey is playing now less because other players are responding very well. They are performing well.
'And we are going to play Manchester (United) for the last three points. And for us it will be very important again, to prepare, to be focused everybody."
According to reports in Argentina (via The Sun), Barcelona and United are both ready to make Martinez their new starting keeper if they can get a deal over the line. United's current first choice Andre Onana has come under scrutiny for some high-profile errors, while Barca stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has played just once since September due to injury.
Ter Stegen returned to the fold against Valladolid at the start of May but has since returned to the bench. Wojciech Szczesny has started regularly in the German's absence, but his own future is uncertain after he came out of retirement to join the Catalan club.
United, meanwhile, are unlikely to spend big on a new keeper but may still spend. Head coach Ruben Amorim laid out the situation amid questions over the future of Cameroon international Onana.

"We cannot change all the players. We need to improve every position on the field," the Portuguese said just days before the Europa League final, where Onana is likely to start despite being dropped earlier in the campaign.
"Goalkeeper is the same; we can work with Andre. Andre Onana already proved he is a top player with Inter. Altay [Bayindir] the same with Fenerbahce. We have some seasons where we are underperforming."

Football transfer rumours: Garnacho off to Villa? Spurs in for Mbeumo?

Alejandro Garnacho will be allowed to leave Manchester United this summer if the price is right. One surprising potential suitor is Aston Villa, who could make a move for the winger. They took Marcus Rashford on loan from Old Trafford last season, revitalising his career somewhat in the progress, so Garnacho might feel it is a move in the right direction away from the current dead end. It will be a busy summer at United as Ruben Amorim attempts to assemble a squad that has the vague chance of fitting into his 3-4-3 constraints. One key area where improvement is required is centre forward. A potential plan to source an actual goalscorer could see United offer up Joshua Zirkzee to Napoli as part of a deal for Victor Osimhen. There could, however, be some very serious competition for the Nigerian as Liverpool might also fancy a nibble. Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike is another shortlisted name at United. The Frenchman scored 15 goals in the Bundesliga last season and, at 22 years old, could be getting better for years to come. If anyone does want to sign Ekitike, it will cost them €100m. 'If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us. We don't have to sell Hugo,' said the Frankfurt CEO Markus Krösche. Bayer Leverkusen and Erik ten Hag continue to sniff around the vicinity of the Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah. The 22-year-old defender struggled for regular minutes under Arne Slot last season but the homegrown centre-back is still valued at £40m around Anfield. Thomas Frank is now officially the new Tottenham head coach. When a manager moves from one club to another, there is always a few rumours that he will take some of his favourites from his previous employer with him. In Frank's case Bryan Mbeumo has already been heavily touted as someone of interest, while the midfielder Christian Nørgaard could be another name the new boss will whisper into Daniel Levy's ear, having word with his compatriot at Brondby too. Everton, Fulham and Bournemouth are also rumoured to be keen. Milan have gone on the blower to Arsenal to ascertain the availability of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior. If the pair do leave, it could prompt Mikel Arteta to firm up his interest in the Ajax defender Jorrel Hato but Chelsea are also interested. After impressing in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers, Hamza Igamane has gained a couple of admirers south of the border. West Ham and Brentford are somewhat eager to pursue a deal for the 22-year-old Moroccan, who netted 16 times last season. Leeds United are back in the big time and they want to bring the Udinese defender Jaka Bijol with them to the Premier League. The 26-year-old Slovenian, who has already amassed 63 caps for this country, is valued in the region of £15m. Chelsea's World Club Cup group stage opponents in focus

Having also sealed a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2023 there is a feelgood factor surrounding the Blues that they will be hoping to carry with them to the United States. Here, the PA news agency looks at the Londoners' group stage opponents and beyond. With his first-half assist against Sporting Kansas City, @LAFC's Denis Bouanga became the second player in club history to reach 70 career goal contributions, joining Carlos Vela (137). — MLS Communications (@MLS_PR) June 9, 2025 The MLS side were a late addition to the tournament and were nearly not involved at all, with an 89th-minute equaliser from Brazilian midfielder Igor Jesus salvaging their preliminary play-off against Club America of Mexico last month before French winger Denis Bouanga won it towards the end of extra time. The play-off came about after Club Leon, also from Mexico, were disqualified from the tournament over FIFA's rules on dual ownership. LAFC, who are first up for Chelsea in Atlanta on June 16, are relatively new to MLS having been founded in 2014. They finished top of the Western Conference last season and qualified for the play-offs where they ultimately finished third, with their only national title coming in 2022. Former Tottenham goalkeeper and France's World Cup-winning captain Hugo Lloris and ex-Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud are standout names, while Odin Holm, on loan from Celtic, will also be familiar. Coach Steve Cherundolo played more than 300 Bundesliga matches for Hannover. See you in two weeks, @LAFC 🇺🇸 — Flamengo (@Flamengo_en) June 10, 2025 A clash with Brazilian giants Flamengo follows in Philadelphia, with the Rio de Janeiro state champions and current leaders of the national championship likely to be the strongest opposition faced by Maresca's side in the group stage. They qualified as Copa Libertadores winners in 2022. A familiar face awaits in the dugout with former Chelsea full-back Felipe Luis leading the team as head coach, though the former Brazil international made only 15 Premier League appearances in his single season at Stamford Bridge in 2014/15. Jorginho played more recently for the club, leaving for Arsenal in 2023 and moving to Flamengo earlier this month, while defender David Luiz – a Champions League winner with the Blues in 2012 – departed only last summer. Flamengo lifted the Intercontinental Cup back in 1981 after a 3-0 win over Bob Paisley's Liverpool in Tokyo, and with seven titles they are the joint-third most successful club in Brazilian football. Bayern Munich are another possible opponent, as are New Zealand club Auckland City. Thereafter things become less easy to predict, but topping the group could well set them up for a quarter-final against either Real Madrid, Paris St Germain or Borussia Dortmund.
