Ratan Tata's TCS, Narayana Murthy's Infosys, Azim Premji's Wipro, HCLTech; Indian IT companies are sacking employees despite profits due to...

Narayana Murthy, Late Ratan Tata and Azim Premji- File image (Left to right) Major IT companies like TCS, HCLTech and Infosys have announced massive layoffs in the recent weeks despite steady revenue growth, leading to several questions. As per the recent update, major Indian IT companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and HCLTech are cutting jobs and slowing hiring. TCS laid off over 12,000 employees (2%), Infosys paused fresher onboarding, and Wipro is trimming roles selectively. However, readers should note that the layoffs aren't due to financial distress. In fact, the IT companies saw Q1 FY26 saw revenue growth. Why IT companies are doing mass layoffs? Experts say that the traditional headcount-driven growth model is being replaced by automation-led productivity, with GenAI and intelligent platforms reducing dependence on entry-level hiring. Reports also say that the IT firms are abandoning the old pyramid structure, raising the bar for fresher training, and focusing recruitment on niche skills like AI, cloud, and cybersecurity. Consequently, revenue per employee is rising, and bench strength is shrinking, leading to more and more layoffs. Reports also say that the layoffs reflect a strategic pivot toward automation, AI integration, and a more lean, skills-based workforce rather than financial distress. TCS shares trade lower after layoff of 12,200 employees As a result of the lay off news, shares of tech major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) were trading lower on Monday. As per a report by IANS news agency, the share had slipped 1.7 per cent to an intra-day low of Rs 3,081 on BSE. India's largest IT exporter on Sunday announced plans to lay off around 2 per cent of its global workforce. The IT giant which has a total headcount of 6.13 lakh employees as of June 2025, plans to implement the layoffs across various domains and geographies. In a statement, the company said the layoffs would primarily impact middle and senior grades. TCS CEO K Krithivasan described the decision as 'one of the toughest' he had to make and said it is aimed at making the company 'future-ready and agile' in the face of rapidly evolving technologies and workplace models. Trump Hails 'Good Relationship' With China Amid Tariff Talks

Last Updated: US President Trump stated that Washington has good relations with Beijing and hopes China will open its markets. US President Donald Trump on Monday said that Washington has good relations with Beijing, adding that he would like to see China open up its markets to the rest of the world. While speaking to reporters in Scotland alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said, 'We have a good relationship with China. We're all tough, yes, but we're going to see what happens … I'd love to see China open up their country… We just concluded our deal with Japan. It was very good — good for everybody. We're making great deals." . @POTUS on trade talks with China: 'We have a good relationship with China… We're going to see what happens. We just concluded our deal with Japan. It was very good — good for everybody. We're making great deals." — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) July 28, 2025 The US President's response came after top US and Chinese officials met in Stockholm on Monday to resume talks to resolve longstanding economic disputes at the centre of a trade war between the world's top two economies. The fresh round of talks aimed to extend the truce deal by another three months. The current 90-day truce between the US and China – which saw the two countries temporarily lowering tariffs on each other – is set to end on 12 August. The meetings in Sweden – led on Washington's side by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and for Beijing by Vice Premier He Lifeng – came hours after Trump announced a framework tariffs deal with the European Union. Last week, Bessent said talks with China were in 'a very good place" and suggested the new round of talks could result in a second truce. On Monday, South China Morning Post reported that the US and China are expected to extend the truce by another three months. Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported that the US has frozen restrictions on technology exports to China to avoid hurting trade talks and help Trump secure a meeting with President Xi Jinping this year. The US president, in May 2025, had clarified his intentions behind striking a deal with China when he said that Beijing is in a trade surplus with Washington, and according to him, these are not good signs for America. 'China, as you know, has a tremendous trade surplus with us, and we can't, you know, we just can't have that," he had said back then, as quoted by The Telegraph. Without an agreement, global supply chains could face renewed turmoil from U.S. duties snapping back to triple-digit levels that would amount to a bilateral trade embargo. Previous US-China trade talks in Geneva and London in May and June focused on bringing the US and Chinese retaliatory tariffs down from triple-digit levels and restoring the flow of rare earth minerals halted by China and Nvidia's H20 AI chips and other goods halted by the United States. 'Geneva and London were really just about trying to get the relationship back on track so that they could, at some point, actually negotiate about the issues which animate the disagreement between the countries in the first place," Scott Kennedy, a China economics expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington told news agency Reuters. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 21:03 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Nayara Energy takes Microsoft to Delhi HC over abrupt service suspension due to EU sanctions

Nayara Energy , an Indian oil refiner with ties to Russian energy giant Rosneft , has initiated legal proceedings against Microsoft in the Delhi High Court , after Microsoft abruptly ceased providing critical services to Nayara, citing recent European Union (EU) sanctions. "Nayara Energy has initiated legal proceedings against Microsoft following the abrupt and unilateral suspension of critical services. Microsoft is currently restricting Nayara Energy's access to its own data, proprietary tools, and products - despite these being acquired under fully paid-up licences," the company said in a statement. Earlier this month, the European Union imposed sanctions on Nayara Energy as part of its 18th package of measures against Russia in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The 18th package seeks to cripple Russia's economy and its ability to finance war. The package includes additional economic measures, export bans and other measures to counteract circumvention of sanctions and third-country support to Russia. Nayara has been targeted due to Rosneft's 49.13 per cent stake in the company. The Vadinar refinery in Gujarat, operated by Nayara, has a capacity of 20 million tonnes per year and plays a crucial role in India's energy landscape, accounting for approximately 8 per cent of the country's total refining capacity and about 7 per cent of its retail petrol pump network, with over 6,750 pumps. Nayara Energy noted that while the sanctions originate exclusively from the EU, Microsoft, a US-headquartered corporation, has opted to withdraw services without any legal obligation to do so under the US or Indian law. The petition filed in the Delhi High Court seeks an interim injunction and the immediate resumption of services. Nayara stated that these legal steps are aimed at safeguarding its rights and ensuring continued access to essential digital infrastructure to prevent any potential disruption to Nayara's ability to meet its obligations to Indian consumers and stakeholders. Nayara Energy said, "Despite these external challenges that Nayara Energy is currently facing, we remain fully committed to ensuring uninterrupted service and supply to India's energy demands." Beyond its refining and retail operations, Nayara Energy also serves the domestic market through institutional sales and partnerships with other Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
