Ohio State women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff charged with DUI

New York Times13-05-2025
Ohio State women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff was charged with driving under the influence last week in Dublin, Ohio, according to an arrest report obtained by The Athletic.
On May 6, Dublin police were dispatched after a vehicle reportedly drove recklessly through a local neighborhood. The vehicle struck several curbs and drove through the lawn of a residence, per the report. When officers arrived on the scene, McGuff was in the driver's seat, and the car was parked partially off the driveway and in the yard.

When asked where he was coming from, McGruff told an officer, 'I live here,' pointing to his home. When asked again, McGuff eventually said he was from a dinner, and added that he didn't have anything to drink and had not taken any medications, according to the report.
McGuff, coming off his 12th season as Ohio State's coach, failed three in-car tests. One of the tests included the officer asking McGuff to say the alphabet from letter D to letter R without singing, and despite the instructions being repeated three times, McGuff could not recite any letters other than D, the report said.
McGuff agreed to step out of the car to do more tests with the officer but later refused to provide a breath sample, the arresting officer stated.
'The Department of Athletics is aware of an incident involving women's basketball head coach Kevin McGuff,' Ohio State said in a statement. 'The department is in communication with Coach McGuff and monitoring the situation closely. This is an ongoing, personal legal matter, and the department will share additional information at the appropriate time.'
McGuff, 55, is 276-113 in his career at Ohio State, including one Elite Eight appearance in 2023 and a 26-7 finish last season that ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Sayin named QB1, but Kienholz will be a factor in Ohio State's offense

Ohio State vs. Texas is 10 days out and it's time to breakdown the Buckeyes roster. We start with the quarterback room, that has their starter, Julian Sayin and a change of pace, Lincoln Kienholz. Texas is 10 days out from walking into the Horseshoe to face off against Ohio State in a Cotton Bowl rematch. I thought it would be a good time to run through the Ohio State position groups and give the Texas fans an overview of what they are likely to see on August 30th from the Buckeyes. The biggest piece of that is officially naming their QB1 for the season, Julian Sayin. Julian Sayin, as Sarkisian said early this week, is an 'elite thrower' of football. He has the ability to put the ball just about wherever he would like to with tons of accuracy. He is someone that has shades of Bryce Young, someone that can navigate the pocket well and be incredibly accurate. He might not have the most supreme arm strength, but when it comes to arm talent, he is up there with anyone else in the country. The bigger question comes in when you look at his size. Sayin is listed at 6 '1', 208lbs right now on the Ohio State roster. I would be willing to bet he is not quite up to 6'1' once he measures out at the combine in a few years. He is definitely 'undersized' comparative to the rest of the QBs in the country. That being said, he does plenty to make that a non-issue with his movement and football IQ. It will be something to watch heading into the matchup. Julian Sayin will be the starter, and he will get the vast majority of the snaps this year for the Buckeyes. I don't think that means Lincoln Kienholz will not be a part of the equation at all. In fact, I think it is very unlikely that Texas doesn't see Kienholz at some point on August 30th. His athletic ability and better size makes him a great choice for red-zone or short yardage situations for the Buckeyes. It is very likely he is used in packages for the Buckeyes to give them that curveball in the offense. It's hard to say much of anything about Julian Sayin with the utmost confidence. He has thrown 12 college football passes in blowout games. That is unknown, no matter how talented he looks going into the season. What I will say with plenty of confidence is he is the most talented QB they've had since CJ Stroud. I can also say if there is a time to play Julian Sayin, it would be in Week 1. Bottom line, Sayin does not lack talent. He has the capability to be, and I think he will be, a top 10 QB in the country by the end of the year. The question is how quickly can he reach his potential? That is unknown, but Texas will do their best to make the redshirt freshman's first start one he'd like to forget.

MSU hoops' Tom Izzo feels he's 'adjusted to this new era' of college basketball

Tom Izzo: 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think. Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' The college basketball world is ever changing, and Spartans head coach Tom Izzo believes he's adjusted more than many believe. Izzo was speaking at the Larry Shyatt's coaching clinic on Wednesday, where he addressed a number of items in the world of college basketball. One of which was the ever changing nature of the college basketball landscape and how he's been forced to change his philosophy on a number of things. Per a post on social media from college basketball insider and reporter Jeff Goodman, Izzo believes he has "adjusted" more than he thinks, and acknowledged that it wasn't always easy for him to make the necessary changes. 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think," Izzo said during the coaching clinic. "Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' This past year's success on the court for the Spartans helps vindicate that statement from Izzo, with Michigan State claiming the Big Ten title by more than three games and reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Hearing Izzo acknowledge that there have "been some rough spots" should also be promising for fans since it shows he isn't set in his old ways and is clearly adjusting to the new era of college basketball.
