THINK of lush blooms swaying gently, winding soft stone footpaths inviting you to who knows where and the rustling sound of grasses nodding along in the breeze.
Butterflies zig zag from scented clematis and roses to foxgloves and jasmine climbing round your door - as water softly gurgles from a fountain.

Sound good?
Then you'll probably be a fan of romantic gardens.
They've been around for about 300 years - initially designed as a reaction to the strict formal, geometrical designs that went before them.
But what's great - and why they're emerging as a serious trend this year - is that they're easy to create in your outside space, look stunning - and promote positive mental health.
Garden designer Nilufer Danis is building a romantic garden called 'The Three Graces of Galicia' at RHS Hampton flower show - which starts on Tuesday - and is a big advocate for creating beautiful, serene spaces that evoke a sense of calm and wellbeing but are also designed with the environment in mind.
She told Sun Gardening how to create your own.
'Forget about the more contemporary geometric shapes - and think more organic - like winding paths, with shaded covers like a pavilion, pergola, or lots of trellis", she said.
'You're aiming for lots of climbers - like roses, star of jasmine, lavenders and perennials like salvia - and you want scented flowers rather than evergreens and green foliage plants.
'And water fountains - with their nice trickle of water - are not only lovely, but birds and insects like them.
'Pastel colours are really important - they give a dreamy feel - and it's not very clean and neat - it should be more overgrown'
Alan Titchmarsh's top 7 plants that 'transform ugly fences with gorgeous flowers & fragrance' & they grow for years
From Tuesday, Lidl will be selling an English Lavender collection of three pots, for £3.99.
While Crocus has got pots of Salvia 'Victoria Blue' for £3.50 - reduced from £6.99.
English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) generally blooms from mid-summer to late summer.
French Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) can bloom in flushes from late spring to late summer, especially if pruned after each flush.
Nilufer's Romantic Garden at Hampton celebrates the power of literature, identity, and resilience through the legacy of three iconic 19th-century Spanish women — Rosalía de Castro, Emilia Pardo Bazán, and Concepción Arenal.
She added ''I wanted to create a space that celebrates strength, resilience, and the transformative power of ideas. This garden is a tribute to Galicia's rich literary and natural heritage — and an invitation for reflection on identity, justice, and the role of women in shaping the world."
Her plant list includes
- Camellia japonica - chosen for it's glossy leaves and large colourful blooms are common in Galcian gardens
- Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer' thrives in Galicia's cool, moist climate
- Rosa 'The Ancient Mariner' and Rose 'Empress Josephine' - to add fragrance, timeless beauty and a touch of history
- Polystichum setiferum - is low maintenance and supports biodiversity
- Tall topiary trees (Carpinus betulus)

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE UK's nosiest neighbourhoods have been revealed, with a few surprising contenders nabbing top spots. A study saw 2,418 adults across cities throughout Britain and Northern Ireland scored and ranked on their curtain twitching tendencies. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 A study revealed the nosiest neighbourhoods in the UK 2 Many said they thought having a nosy neighbour was harmless It revealed Belfast, Worcester, and Brighton are home to the UK's nosiest neighbours. And the Northern Irish capital scored highest overall - ahead of Worcester, which came second, and Brighton and Hove, which came third. They were evaluated in six categories, including how often they look out their windows to observe their neighbours. Other considerations included how many neighbours they follow on social media, how many claim to know everyone on their street, and how many are members of neighbourhood WhatsApp groups. How many consider themselves to be nosy also informed the overall score, as did how many also think those living nearby are "curious". Commissioned by Škoda, the study found 35 per cent consider themselves to be nosy. Spokesperson Kirsten Stagg said: "Nosiness is practically a national sport in Britain. "Whether it's a new car on the driveway or a new family moving in, we can't help but take a peek. "Being a nosy neighbour isn't just harmless fun - it helps build safer, more connected communities and even sparks conversations, especially around new technology like electric cars." Out of everyone polled, it emerged the most common time for observing the neighbours is between 6pm and 8pm. DIY Privacy Fences: Affordable Garden Solutions And although nosiness is often considered to be a negative trait, it isn't necessarily a bad thing – 47 per cent believe being a nosy neighbour is harmless. While 34 per cent reckon it's a good thing, because it's helpful in cases of emergency, and helps keep the neighbourhood safe. With 35 per cent of the opinion it builds a stronger sense of community. The study also found through observation alone those polled have learnt very specific details about those living close by. These include what they do for a living, the time they leave for work, and where they shop based on their bags. They've also noticed deliveries being made, their workout schedule, and a new car on the driveway. The latter a subject those polled have a particular fascination with – 70 per cent know the colour of their neighbour's car. Almost half know the make, 35 per cent the model, and 15 per cent can even recall the registration. And if anyone living close-by was to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) that could also get curtains twitching – 16 per cent would be curious and want to know what it's like. While 14 per cent would be impressed by their green credentials and 22 per cent would support their decision. Carried out through OnePoll, the study commissioned by the makers of the all-electric Škoda Enyaq revealed how those polled perceive EV drivers and being eco-conscious came top. With tech savvy and trendy also common perceptions.

Paul Smith extends Fashion Residency programme to US with CFDA

British designer Paul Smith has expanded his brand's existing Fashion Residency programme to students in the US. In partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), for the initiative's second edition the Paul Smith Foundation will be selecting one American designer to join the residency at Studio Smithfield in London. The inaugural US participant, who will be part of the Paul Smith's Foundation x CFDA Designer-in-Residence, will join six UK-based designers in receiving a 400 square foot studio space for 12 months, supported by Projekt. Each designer will also receive mentoring from industry leaders, business-planning training, a visa, flights and living expenses. Applications for the second cohort of the programme have now been opened, with shortlisted candidates associated with the CFDA-led arm to begin interviews in September 2025. Designer Paul Smith will oversee the selection process alongside CFDA president, Steven Kolb, and vice president of program strategies/education and sustainability initiatives at CFDA, Sara Kozlowski. Launched in 2024, Paul Smith founded the Fashion Residency at Studio Smithfield programme alongside the Mayor of London and Projekt. Through it, select young designers are given access to set workspace and a training programme, the latter designed by the Paul Smith's Foundation, which matches participants with industry professionals. In a statement, Kolb said: 'Fashion is truly a global business, and an opportunity such as this will provide one American talent with invaluable experience and exposure in an international market. The chance to work alongside peers in the UK fosters creative exchange, builds cross-cultural understanding, and strengthens our industry as a whole. We are deeply grateful to Sir Paul Smith for his continued collaboration and dedication to nurturing the next generation of talent.'
