Five factors reshaping global LNG trade and contracts

Trade Arabia25-05-2025

Despite a temporary truce, the sweeping tariffs introduced by the Trump administration against multiple trading partners are set to have far-reaching consequences, including significant implications for global LNG markets, said an expert in its report in Energy Connects.
The 10 percent US tariff imposed on China in February 2025 quickly resulted in a tit-for-tat escalation by April. Despite a 90-day tariff reprieve announced mid-May, US LNG is still subject to a 25% tariff, making it uneconomic to send it to China.
As a result, China ceased importing US LNG cargoes as of February 6, 2025; these cargoes are now being diverted to Europe. These imports are unlikely to resume while Chinese tariffs remain in place; in the long term, mistrust is likely to remain between the largest LNG export and importer, stated Anne-Sophie Corbeau, the Global Research Scholar at Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University.
Tight global gas market conditions
In contrast, lower tariffs imposed on other major importers of US LNG – such as EU countries, Japan, and South Korea – are unlikely to trigger similar retaliation. This is largely due to current tight global gas market conditions and the limited availability of alternative gas suppliers.
EU countries, which imported around 50 billion cubic meters (bcm) of US LNG in 2024, are expected to increase their purchases in 2025 to replenish storage facilities and replace Russian gas previously transiting through Ukraine.
Imposing retaliatory tariffs on US LNG would only drive up energy costs for European consumers and hurt the EU economy without real added benefit.
US LNG as a negotiating tool
President Trump has repeatedly emphasised that countries affected by tariffs should help balance their trade deficits by increased purchases of US LNG. In practice, this goal is largely unrealistic.
For instance, the EU would need to import nearly 20 times more LNG (based on 2024 figures) to offset its $236 billion trade deficit with the US. The same holds true for mature LNG importers like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, as well as emerging LNG importers like Vietnam, said Anne in the Energy Connects report.
Commercial viability of projects
But even if numbers don't add up, there has been mounting pressure on governments and companies to contract more US LNG, especially from plants that have yet to reach a final investment decision (FID).
Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese stakeholders have been encouraged to look into buying LNG from the Alaska LNG project, while Vietnam has signed agreements to cooperate with US companies to explore US LNG imports, she stated.
Whether these discussions lead to firm Sale and Purchase Agreements (SPAs) remains uncertain, as such decisions are ultimately driven by projects' commercial viability, she added.
Preserving the flexibility of US LNG
There is a certain irony in using US LNG to address trade imbalances. Even if European, Japanese, or Korean buyers sign long-term contracts for US LNG, it is uncertain whether those shipments will physically arrive in their countries.
Since exports from the US Lower 48 began in 2016, the defining feature of US LNG has been its flexibility – allowing offtakers to redirect cargoes to any LNG importing country based on price signals and market demand.
If – in the name of plugging trade deficits – US LNG were to have more fixed destinations, this would undermine one of the key competitive advantages that US LNG has against other competitors such as Qatar. Preserving this flexibility should remain a priority in future negotiations, stated the Energy Connects report.
US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports are likely to directly impact US LNG export facilities, especially those currently under construction or aiming to reach FID.
These metals are critical components in LNG infrastructure, including cryogenic tanks and heat exchangers, while the tariffs affect upstream and midstream operations by increasing the cost of well construction, pipeline development, and surface infrastructure.
These rising costs are expected to influence upcoming LNG contract negotiations and may even spill over into existing agreements, as producers seek to renegotiate for higher prices. This could potentially give some buyers – particularly in China – a legal or commercial avenue to exit their contracts, said Anne in the report.
According to her, the timing is particularly challenging. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) now projects that US gas prices will exceed $4/mmBtu in both 2025 and 2026 (against $2.2 in 2024).

New technology, efficiency top priorities for supply chain leaders

Global supply chain leaders recognise technology as a performance enabler, with 61% investing between $1 million and $10 million in the next five years to build more resilient, efficient supply chains, says a report. Blue Yonder, a world leader in end-to-end digital supply chain transformation, today released the results of its inaugural 'Supply Chain Compass' report highlighting nearly 700 global supply chain leaders' key strategic priorities: implementing new technology (51%), improving efficiency and productivity (40%) and building more resilient supply chains (29%). The three-part report features responses from senior supply chain leaders in North America and Europe who work in manufacturing, retail and logistics. Achieving each strategic priority over the next three years will require specific actions, and respondents identified better demand planning (46%) and quickly obtaining and analyzing data on performance (46%) as two of the top actions they believe are essential to success. This was followed by investing in tracking and visibility solutions (45%), digital software transformation and innovation (41%) and managing supply chain costs (33%). In the current macroeconomic environment characterised by volatility and rapid change, focusing efforts on each of these actions will be critical. These priorities not only speak to immediate operational challenges but also position organisations to adapt swiftly to external pressures, ensuring resilience and competitiveness in an unpredictable landscape. 'A consistent theme among surveyed leaders was the adoption of innovative solutions that deliver true end-to-end visibility across the supply network and enable a more connected, intelligence-driven approach to demand and supply planning,' said Andrea Morgan-Vandome, Chief Innovation Officer, Blue Yonder. 'In the face of ongoing economic uncertainty, geopolitical instability, and inflationary pressures, supply chain leaders are prioritizing technologies that enhance speed and precision. The report highlights that, beyond mitigating risk, decision-makers are increasingly exploring next-generation AI agents to advance sustainability goals and build supply chains that are not only faster but also more efficient.' New Technology is Foundational Many leaders across industries are actively witnessing the transformative power that new technology can bring, with 74% agreeing that AI is already changing the way their business operates. A staggering 82% of leaders agree that outdated technology will hinder their supply chain's potential, and 51% state that implementing new technology is a top priority in the next three years. Supply chain leaders are willing to invest in technology, with 89% of decision-makers dedicating a specific budget to new supply chain technologies. For 61% of respondents, the budget for supply chain technology is between $1 million and $10 million across the next five years. With technology being a key enabler of supply chain performance, decision makers recognize they will need to prioritize new solutions and tools to respond to market challenges and growth opportunities. Barriers to AI Adoption Generative AI is currently under-implemented compared to traditional AI, which is largely used for prediction and automation. The majority of respondents (83%) are using (or are implementing) AI-powered automation, and 78% said the same of machine learning and predictive AI. By contrast, just 36% are using or implementing generative AI. However, there is a clear pathway of opportunity being explored. Generative AI is becoming more important to enhance reliability and address sustainability goals, with one in four companies indicating they are implementing the technology. Only 16% said they have no plans at all for implementing generative AI-based solutions. Understanding barriers to generative AI implementation is key for supply chain decision-makers: · Human Impact: Of those with no plans to implement generative AI, 51% said that their organization will prioritize a people-led approach over cutting-edge technology. · High Cost of Adoption: Organizations with an expected technology budget lower than $500,000 for the next one to five years are significantly less likely to consider implementing generative AI. · Different Priorities: Organizations not currently using generative AI aren't necessarily behind — they're prioritizing other strategic initiatives, such as automating inventory management to drive efficiency. Businesses that focus on transportation, order management and execution and fulfillment are significantly more likely to be investigating the implementation of generative AI (46%), while those in logistics (16%) are behind the adoption curve with no plans to implement. Intersection of Technology and Sustainability Achieving more sustainable supply chains is top of mind for today's leaders, with 'sustainable' being the number one word used to describe the future of their supply chains by respondents. This rang true for nearly two-thirds (68%) of leaders who agree there is an onus on supply chain operators to help solve problems like waste and climate change. Organizations that chose sustainability as a top three strategic priority are far more optimistic about their business performance. Overall, leaders are initially focusing on tangible efforts to impact sustainability, but many are not yet embracing technology solutions that can provide a combination of cost savings and sustainability benefits: · Top opportunities for sustainability in supply chains are tangible investments often bearing a cost: Sustainable packaging (37%), reducing waste across manufacturing (30%), recycling (28%), renewable energy resources/green fuels (28%) and lower emissions from warehouses and facilities (27%). · Fewer leaders have embraced technology-related sustainability opportunities: Data analytics for emissions tracking (22%), connected networks for efficient shipping (17%), reducing waste from expiration (13%) and better returns processing (12%). · Nevertheless, there is a recognized link between sustainability, technology, and efficiency among one cohort: 26% believe that forecasting technology can improve efficiency and, in turn, sustainability efforts. There is immense opportunity at the intersection of technology and sustainability. Respondents who named sustainability as a top three strategic priority are on the leading edge of technology and AI adoption: 94% say end-to-end data connectivity is fundamental to the success of their business (vs. 85% total), 80% say AI is already changing how they operate (vs. 74% total) and 61% say they are currently investigating generative AI.

KR, HD Hyundai Mipo and HD KSOE collaborate on tank design for green ships

KR (Korean Register) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with HD Hyundai Mipo and HD Korean Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) on applying Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) techniques to the design of Type-C cargo tanks for liquefied gas carriers to ensure their structural safety. The agreement was signed on June 3 at Nor-Shipping 2025 in Oslo, Norway. With the maritime industry accelerating its transition toward decarbonization, demand is growing for ships powered by alternative fuels such as LNG, ammonia, and hydrogen. These fuels are typically stored and transported in high-pressure, cryogenic liquefied form, requiring advanced safety measures for onboard containment systems. Therefore, ensuring the structural integrity of cargo tanks has become a critical element in next-generation, environmentally sustainable ship design. This MoU represents a proactive response to these evolving needs. The three parties aim to improve the structural safety and design reliability of IMO Type-C independent tanks—one of the most widely adopted containment systems for low-emission vessels. Type-C tanks are commonly used on small to mid-sized gas carriers and bunkering vessels due to their structural independence and ability to store high-pressure cargo, and therefore require precise structural analysis to ensure safety. To tackle these technical challenges, the partners will apply ECA — a fracture mechanics-based structural analysis method — from the early stages of design. ECA simulates potential crack propagation in metallic structures, and assesses whether they can safely withstand real-world operating conditions. The methodology is particularly well-suited for high-pressure, low-temperature environments such as those found in liquefied gas storage. Under the agreement, HD Hyundai Mipo will conduct structural strength and fatigue assessments of the tanks, and HD KSOE will lead tank design and perform ECA-based structural evaluations. KR will review safety and compliance of the design in accordance with its classification rules and the international convention (IGC Code), with the goal of issuing an Approval in Principle (AIP). Lee Dong-jin, Executive Vice President of HD Hyundai Mipo, commented: 'Through this collaboration, we aim to secure AIP and further strengthen our competitiveness in the green ship market. We will continue to lead the industry through the development of high-value-added technologies.' Lee Dong-ju, Senior Vice President of HD KSOE, said: 'This project marks meaningful progress in ensuring both structural safety and design rationality of fuel tanks for green ships through the application of advanced structural evaluation techniques. We remain committed to advancing design and manufacturing technologies for environmentally friendly vessels.' Kim Han-se, Senior Vice President of HD KSOE SD Business Unit, stated: 'The joint development effort is expected to enhance the competitiveness of independent tanks in the high-value, eco-friendly vessel market. We are dedicated to delivering safe and efficient tank solutions tailored to the evolving demands of global shipowners, leveraging our advanced design and evaluation expertise.'
