40,000 Catfish Fish Fry Released In Timah Tasoh To Boost Recreational Fishing In Perlis

Barnama26-06-2025
PADANG BESAR, June 26 (Bernama) -- A total of 40,000 baung (catfish) fish fry were released into the Timah Tasoh Freshwater Fish Sanctuary near here today, as part of ongoing initiatives to strengthen the recreational fishing sector and ensure sustainable resources in Perlis.
Perlis Agriculture, Plantation and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Razali Saad said that apart from preserving local fishery resources, it is to add economic value for residents through recreational activities such as net-fishing and angling.
"This initiative can become an attraction for anglers and outsiders who come here. Recreational activities can also boost income for the surrounding communities," he said at the fish fry release programme today.
The initiative was officiated by Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli and also attended by Perlis Fisheries director Mohammed Roshaizat Mustaffa.
Meanwhile, Razali said the state thanked the federal government for providing an additional allocation of RM2 million, bringing the total allocation to RM5.8 million for this year for the benefit of the agriculture sector in Perlis.
Meanwhile, Roshaizat said the release of the baung fry maintains the native fish population in the area as well as rebalancing the ecosystem affected by the presence of invasive fish species.
'Among the invasive fish species identified as disrupting the ecosystem are peacock bass and humpback (bongkok) fish. These fish reproduce quickly and consume the eggs of local fish, negatively impacting the population of native fish such as baung, temperas and patong.
'We have also carried out awareness programmes with the community and university students to catch these invasive fishes, but the impact is still being monitored as the reproduction rate of these fishes is very fast,' he said.
He also reminded the public not to arbitrarily release any fish species into rivers or lakes without permission from the Fisheries Department, as legal action could be taken according to the Perlis River Fisheries Rules in Perlis.

Security guard collects recyclables at dumpsite to support family

GUA MUSANG: For the past two years, Wan Azli Wan Abdullah has endured the foul smell of rubbish while scavenging for recyclables to supplement his income. The 37-year-old security guard works part-time at a dumpsite near Kampung Kundur to make ends meet. 'With a salary of RM1,700 a month, it's just not enough to cover living expenses, especially with rising costs. That's why I took this job, even if people look down on me,' he said. 'I don't mind what others say. I just want to earn halal money to support my wife and children, aged four to 10,' he told reporters at the dumpsite. Among the items he collects are plastic bottles and cans, which he later sells to scrap dealers. Wan Azli, a resident of Kampung Rahmat, takes pride in his work despite being labelled a rubbish collector. 'I will spend the week collecting all these items before selling them to scrap dealers,' he explained. 'The most valuable items are copper, which I can sell for RM25 per kg, while beverage cans go for RM3 and plastic bottles for RM0.40 per kg.' His efforts earn him up to RM400 a month, helping ease his family's financial burden. He dedicates four days a week to collecting and sorting waste, working from 8 am until noon. 'Sometimes my father-in-law, Hassan Sudin, 58, joins me in collecting these used items,' he shared. Nearly 20 others also rely on the dumpsite for their livelihood, highlighting the struggles faced by low-income earners. - Bernama

GUA MUSANG, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- For the past two years, Wan Azli Wan Abdullah has grown accustomed to the pungent, fishy odour of rubbish as he searches for recyclable items to earn extra income to support his family. The 37-year-old security guard at a private company spends his spare time collecting discarded items at a dumpsite near Kampung Kundur here. 'With a salary of RM1,700 a month, it's just not enough to cover living expenses, especially with rising costs. That's why I took this job, even if people look down on me. 'I don't mind what others say. I just want to earn halal money to support my wife and children, aged four to 10,' he told reporters at the dumpsite recently, adding that among the items he picked up were plastic bottles and cans. Wan Azli, who lives in Kampung Rahmat, said he always took pride in his work, despite being labelled a rubbish collector. ANCP: Navy Procession, Assets Brightens Up Penang Sky And Sea After 35 Years

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- After 35 years, Penang is back in the spotlight with the ASEAN Navies' City Parade (ANCP), which took place today at Padang Kota Lama, alongside the state government's Hari Buletin 4.0 celebration. The ANCP, which is an initiative of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) in an effort to introduce and promote naval military traditions to the general public, witnessed a military parade involving a contingent of 10 ships from ASEAN countries, the Malaysian United Cadet Force (PKBM Laut), the RMN Voluntary Reserve Force and the RMN Veterans Association. Among the events that stole the spotlight were the RMN combat boat demonstration and helicopter fly-past, as well as the silent parade and band performance by RMN, which mesmerized thousands of visitors who arrived as early as 6.30 am. A total of 301 ASEAN ship contingents and 388 school students from 11 schools including Penang Free School, SMK (P) St George, SMK Pekula Jaya, and SMK Bukit Jambul participated as parade contingents and marching bands. The parade of ship contingents involved were RSS Vigour from Singapore; KRI Bung Tomo (Indonesia); KPD Darulaman (Brunei); UMS King Sin Phyu Shin (Myanmar); HTMS Krabi (Thailand); VPNS Quang Trung (Vietnam) and BRP Antonio Luna (Philippines) while representing Malaysia were three TLDM warships namely KD Kedah, KD Lekiu and KD Lekir. The ANCP was held concurrently with several important regional events including the 19th ASEAN Naval Chiefs Meeting (ANCM), the third ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise (AMNEX) and the ASEAN Fleet Review (AFR). The ANCP in Penang also carries its own historical value, recalling the memories of the International Royal Fleet Review (IRFR) on May 19 1990 which involved 59 warships and 11,000 naval personnel from various countries. In appreciation of the services of RMN veterans and recognition of past service, a total of 30 RMN Veterans also participated in the parade at this year's ANCP, in addition to being enlivened by the participation of the Penang Chinese Peranakan Association, Boria Omara and the Penang Chingay Association. Earlier, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib inspected the Main Guard of Honour led by RMN Lieutenant Commander Mohd Amirul Abdullah Hanan and Lieutenant Abdul Hakim Mohd Sidek who carried the pennant of RMN 23rd Squadron
