No. 5 seed Michigan holds off UC San Diego 68-65 in March Madness nailbiter
DENVER (AP) — Vladislav Goldin and Michigan proved a bit too much for UC San Diego when the Russian center scored 14 points Thursday night and the fifth-seeded Wolverines overcame Tyler McGhie's 25 points to escape with a 68-65 win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
McGhie's 3-point attempt at the buzzer with 7-footer Danny Wolf in his face hit the back iron and the Wolverines and their fans finally exhaled.
Michigan advanced to face fourth-seeded Texas A&M in the South Region. The Aggies turned away Yale 80-71 at Ball Arena earlier in the evening.
McGhie's bucket with 2:29 left gave the 12th-seeded Tritons their only lead at 65-63. Tre Donaldson, who was on the Auburn team that was upset by Yale in last year's NCAA Tournament, responded with a 3-pointer to restore Michigan's lead.
Goldin, who picked up his fourth foul at the 8:25 mark, grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with 19.3 seconds left. He sank both to make it 68-65.
The Tritons (30-5), who moved up from Division II in 2020, won the Big West regular-season and tournament titles and earned the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid in their first season of Division I eligibility.
The Tritons brought the nation's longest winning streak into March Madness, having won 15 straight since their last loss on Jan. 18.
But the Big Dance, the big stage, the bright lights — not to mention coach Dusty May's talented Wolverines (26-9), who made an unlikely run to the Big 10 Tournament title, looked like they would be too much for the Tritons.
UC San Diego settled in, however, after a slow start and put a scare into Michigan.
The Tritons didn't score for more than five minutes to start the game — they didn't even get a shot off for more than two minutes. Michigan reeled off the first 10 points before McGhie drove to the hoop and scored UC San Diego's first basket at the 14:55 mark.
Goldin's three-point play with 1.8 seconds left sent Michigan into halftime with a 41-27 lead and he opened the second half with a free throw for a 15-point cushion.
He picked up his fourth foul at the 8:25 mark and wouldn't score again until the final seconds.
The NCAA required UC San Diego to wait five years to be eligible for March Madness following its move to Division I. Coach Eric Olen built the team with help from the transfer portal by bringing in three D-II stars — guards Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones, McGhie and Hayden Gray.

Two years ago, Goldin was a key player on FAU's Final Four team. When Michigan fired coach Juwan Howard and hired May away from FAU a year ago, the new coach brought his old center with him to Ann Arbor.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Bryce Underwood is ready to have all eyes on him this season, playing quarterback for No. 14 Michigan hailed as the top-rated recruit in the country. He's also ready to take some hits. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Underwood told two reporters earlier this summer — at a car dealership that leveraged his name, image and likeness to draw fans for autographs — that he has put on 15 pounds of muscle to get bigger, stronger and quicker. 'It's made me more explosive,' Underwood said. 'I feel way more faster.' The Wolverines trail four Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25, but Underwood said people should expect a lot from them on both sides of the ball. 'Offense and defense that they never seen before,' he said. Second-year coach Sherrone Moore, who might name a starting quarterback on Monday, said Underwood's talent and comprehension of the offense under new coordinator Chip Lindsey are what have stood out the most so far from the freshman. 'Consistency is the biggest thing,' he said. 'Don't turn the ball over, command the offense, make plays.' Sign-stealingMoore will be suspended for the third and fourth game of the season as a self-imposed sanction in response to the NCAA investigation into the sign-stealing scandal that has loomed over the program for two years. 'They compete in the weight room every single day, push each other and they just work as hard as they can,' Underwood said. Over-under Michigan was 8-5 in Moore's debut season, closing with three straight wins, including a fourth in a row against rival Ohio State and over Alabama in a bowl game. The Wolverines are projected to have similar results this year. The Wolverines over-under is 8 1/2 wins, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Michigan's mantra Robby Emery, director of character development for Michigan football, has tried to set the tone with coaches and players to control what they can and to let the rest go. 'We're really living by this motto of TNT — today not tomorrow,' Moore said. The schedule Michigan opens with New Mexico on Aug. 30 under the lights at the Big House. The Wolverines travel to play Oklahoma, where Moore was an offensive lineman nearly 20 years ago, in Week 2. Moore will miss a home game against Central Michigan and the Big Ten opener at Nebraska. Michigan edge Derrick Moore lands on ESPN's Top 100 players list
With just 10 days until its season-opener, No. 14 Michigan is set to wrap up fall camp and pivot towards game prep for Aug. 30's matchup against New Mexico. In preparation for that first full Saturday of the 2025 college football season, ESPN has released a list of the Top 100 players in the country heading into this fall. In years past, Michigan players have littered this list, but with most of the core of U-M's 2023 national championship run having moved on to the NFL, the Wolverines are represented by just one individual on this year's ESPN list: senior edge rusher Derrick Moore. Moore comes in as the No. 81 player nationally according to ESPN, as the senior looks to lead a somewhat new-look defensive line for Michigan in 2025. "After two straight seasons of consistent production for the Wolverines' defense, Moore heads into his senior season ready to once again be one of the key cogs in Wink Martindale's unit," ESPN's Paolo Uggetti wrote of Moore. "At Big Ten media days, Moore made news by joking that Ohio State's title was not a "real win" because the Buckeyes didn't beat Michigan." Expectations are high for the Michigan's defense under second-year coordinator Wink Martindale heading into this season. The Wolverines' defensive line is a major factor in that optimism, with Moore returning alongside fellow senior T.J. Guy to form one of the most dangerous edge rushing duos in the country. Defensive line is perhaps Michigan's deepest position group as well. Edge rushers Cameron Brandt and Dominic Nichols have made noise during fall camp and will rotate with Moore and Guy on the exterior. Meanwhile, on the inside, senior defensive tackle Rayshawn Benny brings All-Big Ten potential, while Clemson transfer Tre Williams also brings a lot of experience to the group. Michigan is expected to rotate up to six defensive tackles throughout the season, with Alabama transfer Damon Payne and home-grown talents Trey Pierce, Enow Etta and Ike Iwunnah are vying for snaps. It just feels like a daily tradition and now we know who's gonna be starting at the quarterback position for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. That's CJ Carr, and CJ Carr should be noted as the grandson of a longtime Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr. A lot of questions about, you know, longtime Michigan head coach's grandson going to. Uh, Notre Dame, a huge rival, but more importantly for Notre Dame, this is a team that, much like most of the top 10, has questions at the quarterback position. That is one of the themes we haven't paid enough attention to coming into this year in college football. Frankly, if you start going up and down the list of the top 567 teams in the country, it's harder to find teams that don't have questions at the quarterback position than they do. And there won't be a lot of wiggle. Room for Carr once he is behind center starting the season for Notre Dame. Let's keep in mind that he starts at #10 Miami. Now Miami, we'll see how good they are, but going down into the swampiness of Miami early in the season is always a conditioning test. And then no break right after that. They get Texas A&M at home. That's two marquee matchups in a schedule that really only has maybe 3, so there's very little grace. Period here for the redshirt freshman to go out and get this opportunity. Notre Dame; he's played one game so far in his career. He will step into a team that has national championship aspirations and all eyes will be on what he can do. Also, I just wonder how many car puns are gonna be coming from Notre Dame fans everywhere, drive the car, park the car, stall the car. All of these things are gonna be happening all year, and we're in for all of it as we get ready for college football season. Close
