Natalie Portman reveals why she prefers living in Paris with her kids over Los Angeles: ‘Very good at privacy'

New York Post15-05-2025

Natalie Portman prefers to raise her family in The City of Light as opposed to under the Hollywood stars.
The 'Black Swan' actress, who moved to Paris in 2014, revealed she loves living in a European city that's bustling but has a culture that's polite and 'very good at privacy.'
'Even when it's cold and gray, there's always some incredible exhibit or concert or dinner party or writers in town; something fascinating and stimulating happening… and the frequent vacations are so clutch!' Portman told fashion outlet Net-a-Porter on Monday.

Portman, 43, pushed back on a stereotype about how French residents are rude, pointing out the 'weird' social differences between the US and France.
'I find the people here are actually incredibly friendly – you just have to know how to interact, so that we're not the ones being rude,' Portman said. 'Now, when I go back to the US, I'm like, oh, I would go into a store and not say hello to everyone there? It's weird.'
The 'V for Vendetta' star insisted that cultural differences do not equal rudeness.
'I think we have an assumption that Western cultures are all the same, and kind of evened out by all this pop culture that everyone consumes,' Portman claimed. 'It's not true: it's extremely specific here.'
In 2014, Portman ditched Los Angeles and moved to Paris alongside her then-husband Benjamin Millepied, whom she met when he was a choreographer and dancer on the set of 'Black Swan.'
The Oscar winner shares two children, Aleph,13, and Amalia, 8, with Millepied.

But the couple ended up calling it quits and finalized their divorce in March 2024 after Millepied had an alleged affair with a 25-year-old climate activist named Camille Étienne.
The actress is now reportedly dating French musician Tanguy Destable.
Portman stayed in France following the breakup with Millepied and praised how parents raise kids in France.
'All the kids that come to my house are, like, 'bonjour Madame' – and give me the bise [cheek-to-cheek kiss],' Portman told the outlet. 'And before they leave, they are, like, 'thank you for having me' – and if I'm not nearby, they'll come and find me to say it.'

Portman was born in Jerusalem, Israel, and rose to fame as a teenage star acting in films like 'Heat,' 'Mars Attacks' and 'Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.'
She's not the only star who ditched the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles for a better family life.
In 2014, Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, planted their roots in Austin, Texas.

The 'Interstellar' actor, who was born and raised in the Lone Star State, said he always planned to return and raise a family and to be closer to his mother and two older brothers, who also live in Texas.
'I wanted them to have what I grew up around… There's a solid… amount of common sense that runs through it, it's untalked about, but we understand it here,' McConaughey told 'Today' in 2014.
'Stranger Things' actress Millie Bobby Brown swapped Hollywood for farm life in rural Georgia with her husband Jake Bongiovi, the son of singer Jon Bon Jovi.
The couple tied the knot in May 2024 and Brown insisted that she loved the lifestyle during a March 2025 interview with Vanity Fair, but added that the country life is not easy.
'If you're not picking up horse s–t or washing a cow with your bare hands, then that life is not made for you. At all,' she told the outlet.

Texas House shines light on Lone Star State innovators at SXSW London

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As Austin's iconic South by Southwest (SXSW) launches its inaugural Europe festival this week, one group of Texans is hoping to highlight the spirit of the Lone Star State in London. Texas House launched as a satellite activation in Austin during SXSW in March 2025. According to the organizers, the event hosted nearly 3,000 attendees over two days, nearly 40% of whom were C-suite level executives. It offered panel discussions, focusing on how Texas is experiencing a modern renaissance — leading in tech, energy, life sciences and innovation. The founder, Will Herrmann, said he hopes to bring the same focus on Texas innovators to the European leg of SXSW. MORE: SXSW to expand with a London edition in 2025 'We're living in an era of significance in this state that we've not seen since we discovered oil. It is remarkable time to be a Texan — and I think that the world needs Texans and what we have to offer more than ever,' he said. Herrmann credits the idea for Texas House to his late wife, Abby. 'After many years of attending South by Southwest and seeing a house for every city, state and country except our own, we thought it was time to tell our story,' he said. Alex Kuehler, vice president of communications for Texas House, said the interest and success of the Austin activation in March inspired them to take their show on the road. 'We were like, 'Well, there's only a couple months away. Let's jump at the opportunity and give it another go,'' Kuehler said. 'The whole thing, right from the beginning, was Texans leading global conversations, and what better place to do that than in a global city like London?' SOLD OUT: KXAN investigates how SXSW musician pay highlights industry struggle For its London version, Texas House plans to host several expert panels again, featuring leaders from Rice University and other groups. The activation will also screen a portion of the Texas wildlife documentary, 'Deep in the Heart.' The organizers said one of the biggest differences from the Austin event is barbecue on the menu, from a London eatery known as Texas Joe's — operated by a Texan, of course. 'He also does union western clothing,' Kuehler noted. 'So we're going to have a couple of those things on display, which — he's outfitted Post Malone, done custom for others like Charlie Crockett.' Both Kuehler and Herrmann said they hope people pack their boots, wear their cowboy hats on the plan and join them. Check out the schedule here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Donald and Melania Trump to attend Kennedy Center's opening night of Les Misérables

WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are set to attend the opening-night showing of the musical Les Misérables at the Kennedy Center next week, making a rare public appearance in Washington's nightlife by visiting the cultural institution Trump controversially took over. The White House confirmed the first couple's attendance to USA TODAY. But they won't be seeing all of the musical's cast members, some of whom plan to sit out of the show that night, CNN and the Washington Post reported. Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance will also attend the same showing of Les Misérables, Fox News reported. The musical debuts at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on June 11 and runs through July 13. "I love the songs, I love the play," Trump told Fox News on June 3 after The Atlantic first reported on the plans to attend Les Misérables. "I think it's great ‒ we may extend it." Les Misérables, set in early 19th-century France, tells the story of French peasant Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who struggles to find redemption after 19 years in prison. Trump is known to have "Do you hear the people sing? ‒ one of the musical's most famous songs about everyday people rising up against injustices ‒ playing as he enters for campaign rallies. For JD Vance, his attendance at the Kennedy Center comes after he was loudly booed and jeered while attending a National Symphony Orchestra performance at the center in March. Just weeks into his second White House term, Trump ousted the Kennedy Center's leadership in February and named himself board chairman after complaining about "woke" programming and "drag shows" at the center. He named top ally Ric Grenell, his envoy for special missions, as the Kennedy Center's new president. But Trump's takeover has sparked a significant backlash. Acts such as actress Issa Rae and the Broadway hit "Hamilton" canceled previously scheduled Kennedy Center performances in response to Trump's takeover. And the center has experienced a nosedive in yearly subscriptions. The Washington Post reported sales of subscriptions for the next season of programming at the Kenny Center have plummeted by 36%, down about $1.6 million in revenue from subscription sales to theater, dance, classical and other seasons of performance from the same point in 2014.
