Fears grow for health of social media influencer arrested on live TV in Sierra Leone

The Guardian10-02-2025
Fears are mounting over the mental and physical health of a social media influencer who has been in prison in Sierra Leone for more than a month after she was arrested on live television.
Hawa Hunt, a dual Canadian and Sierra Leonean citizen, was arrested on 22 December while starring in House of Stars, a reality TV show, for comments she made on social media about the president of Sierra Leone and the first lady in May 2023.
In a 25-minute video, Hunt, a 42-year-old fitness and wellbeing influencer who has more than 100,000 followers across Facebook, TikTok and Instagram, criticised Julius and Fatima Maada Bio.
She faces two counts of 'transmitting insulting messages via a computer system' in accordance with the Cybersecurity and Crime Act 2021. Prosecutors claim the video incited public disorder and damaged the reputation of the president and his wife.
Multiple requests for bail for Hunt, a single mother of three children, have been refused. On 28 December, she appeared in a video apologising to the president and first lady and said she was being treated well and that the police had handled everything professionally.
However, her daughter and human rights activists believe this was a forced confession and that she may be facing physical abuse while being held in Pademba Road prison in Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital.
Alicia Hunt, 20, who lives in Calgary in Canada, said she had been allowed to speak to her mother only while prison guards were present.
Hunt told her there were bedbug infestations and a mosquito problem and that she was given limited food – a piece of buttered bread in the morning and half a cup of rice with a small portion of fish in the evening. Alicia said: 'My mother said all the food there makes everyone sick. People would rather starve than eat it.'
She added: 'I whispered to her one time on the call, 'Are you being abused in any way?' And she said, 'Oh yeah, we are regularly hit in here, but that's just Africa, that's how they do things.' There should be no reason why they are laying hands on my mother or anyone.'
Alicia believes her mother's arrest is politically motivated. She said her mother and Fatima Maada Bio went to school together and had engaged online before. 'I do think it was planned, this arrest,' she said. 'Once they heard she was going to be on House of Stars, I think they saw it as an opportunity to [arrest her] live on a nationally known show to make an example of her and incite fear in people speaking out about the government.'
Amnesty International has called for the release of Hunt and for guarantees to a fair trial. It has raised concerns about the law used to prosecute her.

Michèle Eken, a senior researcher at Amnesty International's west and central Africa office, said: 'Amnesty International has already expressed its concern about the law used to prosecute Hawa Hunt … Several cases of possible violations of the right to freedom of expression under the Cybersecurity and Crime Act have previously been reported.'
Alimatu Dimonekene, an advocate for women and girls' rights, said the government's use of the law to detain people for speaking out was 'worrying in terms of its impact' and was 'setting a wrong precedent'.
'People are holding back what they want to say in the media and I think that's a terrible place to be in because we have to hold governments and individuals accountable when it comes to things like extreme violence and abuse,' she said.
Mohamed Bobson Senu, deputy head of media for Sierra Leone police, said he could not comment on any ongoing case. 'That matter is in court,' he said.

Whisky boss who abused wife over birthday gift avoids jail

Leggat was the former managing director of Cara's family's company Douglas Laing & Co based in the Glasgow's Hillington. Leggat made current managing director Cara's life hell as their now 12-year marriage broke down. Read More: He repeatedly slapped his estranged partner and later pushed her into a kitchen cabinet which caused her an injury. Leggat wished his wife dead notably after he was unhappy about a water bottle he received as a birthday present. He also attempted to stop Cara from seeing her dad - company chairman Fred Laing and mum Catherine Laing, both 74. Cara finally reported matters to the police having initially been scared that a conviction would affect Leggat's job prospects. Unemployed Leggat was found guilty in June of engaging in a course of behaviour which was abusive to his partner or ex-partner. Sheriff Allan McKay told him at sentencing: "On some level these are an incredibly sad set of circumstances. "This offer of a community payback order is a direct alternative to custody. "If you breach it and don't see it through, you will find yourself going to prison." A four-month non-harassment order was also granted prohibiting Leggat's contact with Cara. The Glasgow Sheriff Court trial heard that Leggat and Cara were married in 2013 and worked together at the firm. Cara stated to the court that between September and November 2022 was "the worst time of my life" and took a panic attack. She recalled that in October 2022 she had made a re-heated sausage casserole dinner for the pair. Leggat told her to serve a "better looking meal" which he said was suitable for a child and called her names. The next incident took place in January 2023 as a result of Leggat's birthday plans. She said: "He was most aggrieved and disappointed at a lack of effort to mark his birthday in terms of a meal out. "He also didn't rate his presents which included a sports water bottle that I bought him." The water bottle - said to have been made famous on TikTok - was deemed "childish and ridiculous" by Leggat. Leggat then told Cara: "I hope you die in your sleep." The witness added that Leggat apologised to her for the remark and claimed it was "a bit of banter." The pair were given hospitality tickets to Hampden Park in February 2023 for an Old Firm League Cup Final clash. Cara stated that when they walked home after the match and she was pushed into a bush by Leggat She said: "I ended up in a bush or my back against a bush as a result of the force as a result of the slap to my face." When asked how she felt about the incident, Cara replied that it was "upsetting." Leggat "discouraged" Cara to see her parents which also included a curfew which made her "twitch" when it was close. Prosecutor Siobhan Currie said in her closing submissions: "Ultimately, there was a pattern of behaviour to isolate her." Leggat was lastly violent towards her in November 2024 at the family home in the city's Pollokshields. Leggat slapped her on the forehead and pushed her into a kitchen cabinet which resulted in a thigh injury. Cara told the court that she called her mother and father after the incident and Fred attended their home. The court heard that Fred confronted Leggat and "grabbed him by the scruff of the neck." Fred then got his daughter to contact the police which led to Leggat's arrest later that night. Miss Currie asked Cara why she did not contact the police on an earlier occasion. She replied: "I knew he wanted to stay in the Scottish whisky industry. "From my knowledge he would find it hard to get into the USA and Singapore which are key places in the industry. "I didn't want the man not to get an international job." Leggat, now of Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, told the court in his evidence that he left the company in 2023 with Cara taking over his role. Duncan McPhie, defending, told the sentencing: "My client admits, accepts and regrets the behaviour. "He is remorseful and regretful and he is sorry. "In all the circumstances, he tenders his apologies to the court. "It is probably too late to apologise to his victim, but he has asked me to apologise the behaviour he was convicted of."

Renfrewshire paedophile branded "every parent's worst nightmare" jailed after sending sexual messages to teen girls

Twisted John McNaught sent sexual messages on social media platforms to six young teenage girls. A twisted paedophile described as 'every parent's worst nightmare' has been jailed for over three years after sending sexual messages on social media to six young teenage girls. ‌ Creepy John McNaught contacted the girls on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, and sent sexually explicit messages asking them to send naked pictures of themselves to him. ‌ He also sent sexually explicit images and videos of himself to them. ‌ When the girls blocked the 27-year-old pervert's accounts, he created new social media profiles in a bid to message them further – harassing them for indecent photos. Paisley Sheriff Court heard how one of the girls told McNaught she was only 12 and he crudely replied: 'I've had younger girls before.' Procurator fiscal depute Abi McKenna previously told the town's court: 'On February 10, 2024, an 11-year-old girl was messaged initially on TikTok and then on Instagram by the accused which began as general chat but then became sexual and made the girl feel uncomfortable. ‌ 'The accused asked the girl to send pictures of her private parts, which she did at the beginning. 'The accused then sent videos of himself carrying out a sex act on himself, and continued to message the girl in a sexually explicit manner. 'As a result, the girl advised the accused she was not going to send anything else and blocked the accused's account. ‌ 'On March 25, 2024, another Instagram account started messaging the girl. She identified this as being the accused who she had blocked in February but was now using another account name.' McNaught continued to send sexually explicit messages and, when the girl told him her age, he replied stating he didn't care as he's had 'younger girls before'. Further evidence of McNaught's seedy behaviour saw him send messages to a 12-year-old girl, stating she was 'fit', 'young', 'hot' and 'banging' and he asked her if she wanted to see pictures of his private parts. ‌ Ms McKenna added: 'A 13-year-old girl was added on Snapchat at the end of March last year by someone of the name of John Ross McNaught. 'He asked her what age she was and she told him she was 13. 'The accused then started replying to some of her TikToks and would message inappropriate things about her appearance. ‌ 'She deleted the comments and removed the accused from her accounts. 'He then started to create fake accounts which were all similar to the first one. 'He would message this girl... these comments made her feel sick and she wouldn't reply to any but the accused kept sending messages. ‌ 'He didn't send a picture of his face but he sent a picture of his private parts, four or five times, as well as a video of him carrying out a sexual act on himself.' The girls reported the abuse to their parents who contacted police. Officers later found a total of 72 images and videos of child sexual exploitation and abuse on two mobile phones owned by McNaught. ‌ A cybercrime investigation discovered this haul included nine Category A images – ranked as the highest level of severity for indecent images – and 27 Category A videos. McNaught's defence agent said there was 'nothing to say to mitigate these offences'. Sheriff Gillian Craig slammed McNaught and said: 'At the time of your arrest, you were out of control. ‌ 'You sent images, videos and messages of the most repugnant sort. 'These girls asked you to stop. They should never have been placed in that position, they should have been left alone to enjoy the innocence of childhood. 'What is clear is your actions have had catastrophic consequences. ‌ 'Because of the gravity of the offence and your previous analogous conviction a custodial sentence is the only appropriate disposal.' McNaught, described as a prisoner of Low Moss jail, Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, was jailed for three years and four months. Upon his release, McNaught will be subject to licence for 24 months. In addition, he was placed on the sex offenders' register for an indefinite period and made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years. Non-harassment orders for all six of McNaught's victim's were also granted for 20 years.

Police told TMZ that "officers spotted a firearm in" the vehicle that Soulja Boy had been a passenger in. It is not clear why the vehicle was initially pulled over. The rapper was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm shortly after 6am. It's not yet known whether he has since been released. Soulja Boy is yet to publicly comment on the incident. On Saturday night, Soluja Boy had posted videos on Instagram from his birthday party at LA nightclub Poppy. The artist is best known for his 2007 hit Crank That, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and scored him a nomination for best rap song at the Grammys. He was previously arrested and charged with a felony offence for carrying a loaded gun during a 2014 traffic stop in LA. And in April this year, he was ordered to pay more than $4m in damages to his former assistant who accused him of sexual battery and abuse. The unnamed woman sued the star, claiming he regularly raped her and beat her - and sometimes kept her prisoner - when she worked for him.
