What are the mascots of all 18 Big Ten schools?
Illinois: None ... for now
The Fighting Illini have not had a mascot since 2007 since Chief Illiniwek retired. That doesn't mean there isn't a movement to try and start a new tradition. The push is for the Kingfisher. Wrote the Daily Illini: The belted kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) is the only species in the kingfisher (Alcedinidae) family native to Illinois, with their females adorning a naturally occurring orange and blue coloring. They can be found scattered across North America, with fossils dating back to around 600,000 years ago.
Indiana Hoosiers: Hoosier the Bison
Iowa Hawkeyes: Herky the Hawk
Maryland Terrapins: Testudo the Terrapin
Michigan State: Sparty
Michigan Wolverines: None
Minnesota Golden Gophers: Goldy the Gopher
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Northwestern Wildcats
Ohio State Buckeyes: Brutus Buckeye
Oregon Ducks: Puddles
Penn State Nittany Lions: Nittany
Purdue Boilermakers: Purdue Pete
Rutgers Scarlet Knights: Sir Henry
UCLA Bruins: Joe Bruin
USC Trojans: Tommy Trojan
Washington Huskies: Harry the Husky
Wisconsin Badgers: Bucky Badger

Who's better: Cassius Winston or Braden Smith? Social media buzzing about this player debate
Social media was buzzing this week after an analyst gave Cassius Winston the nod over Purdue's Braden Smith in a 2020s All-Big Ten list Who is a better and more accomplished point guard: Michigan State's Cassius Winston or Purdue's Braden Smith? This question has been a hot debate on social media this past week. Rapheal Davis of the Big Ten Network sparked a hot debate this week when he unveiled his All-Big Ten teams of the 2020s, with one of the biggest discussions on social media being centered around Winston and Smith. Davis gave Winston the nod as the first team selection at point guard over Smith -- who landed on Davis' second team. It's even more notable that Davis that gave Winston the nod over Smith since Davis played at Purdue himself and could have easily gave his former school's guy the nod in a toss-up decision. Davis noted that Smith could surpass Winston with a strong upcoming senior season, but some (probably many Purdue fans) felt he already deserved the nod over the Spartans legend. When comparing the two star point guard's careers, they are very much similar with both experiencing both personal and team success during their time in college. Smith, of course, still has one more year to further improve his legacy -- and it doesn't hurt his case that the Boilermakers are considered a preseason top five team nationally (in large part to his return for his senior season). To complete a side-by-side comparison, here is a link to Winston's sports reference page and here is a link to Smith's. So who would you personally give the nod too? If you're reading this article, you're probably like me and a Spartan, which means you would lean towards Winston. But I do respect the argument for Smith, and wouldn't be opposed to him moving into the first team slot should he have another strong year this upcoming season. Regardless of which way you lean, it's a fun debate to have in the middle of July and I personally thank Davis for putting this list together for some fun Big Ten basketball banter in the heart of summer time. Click on Davis' social media post below to see his three All-Big Ten teams of the 2020s and to also check out the replies in relation to the Winston-Smith debate. There are definitely some good responses in favor of both the Spartans and Boilermakers lead guy at point guard worth taking a look at on X. Where Wisconsin football's class of 2026 ranks after Zachary Taylor's decommitment
Wisconsin football's recruiting class of 2026 lost a notable commitment on Friday. Three-star defensive back Zachary Taylor, who committed to Wisconsin in mid-June following his official visit, walked back his pledge and flipped to TCU. The Texas native had listed the Horned Frogs as a finalist before choosing the Badgers last month. His flip drops the Badgers to 14 class of 2026 commitments. That group now ranks No. 58 nationally and No. 15 in the Big Ten. Its standing has fallen dramatically after late-June commitments from blue-chip running back Amari Latimer and wide receiver Jayden Petit brought the group's ranking into the mid-30s. Notably, that standing is in line with the program's No. 59 finish in the 2023 cycle. Remember, Luke Fickell had only weeks to salvage Wisconsin's class that year after taking the job in late November. A high-50s national ranking during a normal cycle is far from the expectation under Fickell, a coach known for his recruiting prowess. Those high expectations were only heightened by his consecutive top-25 finishes in 2024 and 2025. Wisconsin may go back to the drawing board at safety after Taylor's decommitment. Even if it lands a replacement, it's hard to see the class' standing improving significantly. Wisconsin needs a resurgent 2025 football season to build momentum entering next summer's class of 2027 cycle.
