World Day Against Child Labour marked: Collective action needed to provide secure future for our children: President
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari said that child labour is a global challenge that demands collective action by government and civil society to provide a secure future for our children.
'Pakistan, as a signatory to various international conventions aimed at eliminating child labour, is fully committed to ending the exploitation of children. Today, we observed the World Day Against Child Labour, which reminds us to make efforts to protect every child from exploitation and to build a future where children can learn, play, and grow in a safe and dignified environment,' the president said in his message.
He said that Pakistan has taken several steps to prevent exploitation and help affected children. He said that Pakistan has enacted the National Commission on Rights of Child Act (2017), the ICT Child Protection Act (2018), the Juvenile Justice System Act (2018), the Employment of Children's Act (1991), and the Domestic Workers Act (2002). He said that Pakistan has also established effective mechanisms and service units for the prevention of child exploitation, child labour, and providing care and rehabilitation to the affected children. He said that such interventions also include the establishment of the National Commission on the Rights of the Child, the Child Protection Institute, and the Child Welfare Bureaus.
While the government continues to enforce laws and policies, ending child labour is a joint responsibility, he said, 'I urge employers to strictly follow child labour laws and ensure that their workplaces are free from exploitation. I call on parents and guardians to prioritise the education of their children instead of short-term gains. I urge schools and teachers to identify children at risk of dropping out and keep them in classrooms. The media needs to raise awareness about Child Labour, and philanthropists and civil society should support vulnerable families so that no child is forced into labour due to poverty.'
'Today, I also call upon the international community to pay urgent attention to the suffering of children in conflict zones such as Gaza. Thousands of innocent children in these areas have been displaced, injured, or orphaned due to violence and aggression by the occupation forces. Many children face hunger, trauma, and a heightened risk of being pushed into child labour. These children need immediate global support, protection, and justice,' the president said.
He urged government institutions, civil society, human rights defenders, the media, United Nations agencies, educators, parents, and Ulema to take practical steps to end child labour. 'Together, we can dismantle the systems that exploit children and create a Pakistan and a world where every child is free to dream, learn, and build a brighter future,' he said.

President, PM urge efforts to end child labour

Over 12.5 million children in Pakistan are involved in child labour, according to the Child Rights Movement (CRM) National Secretariat. One in four households in Pakistan employed a child for domestic work, often in hazardous conditions, as per the International Labour Organisation (ILO). According to a provincial survey, working children accounted for 11.1 per cent of K-P's child population. According to a statement from the President's House, President Zardari, in his message, called for efforts to protect children from exploitation, expressing hope for a future where children could "learn, play, and grow in a safe and dignified environment". Stressing the need for collective action by governments, the president urged employers to "strictly follow child labour laws and ensure that their workplaces are free from exploitation." He also called on parents and guardians to prioritise their children's education over "short-term gains". "I urge schools and teachers to identify children at risk of dropping out and keep them in classrooms." Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz, while reaffirming the government's commitment to ending child labour, highlighted the role of "the federal and provincial governments, the private sector, educational institutions, media, and civil society" in preventing child labour, the APP reported. "Children subjected to child labour not only face sexual and psychological abuse but they are also deprived of their fundamental right to education. They are robbed of their childhood," he said. PM Shehbaz also noted that children from "developing countries are the most affected by the scourge of child labour." "Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with the global community in its fight against child labour," he added. He said that this year's theme, "Progress is clear, but there's more to do: let's speed up efforts!" highlights that while progress has been made, much more remains to be done.

Punjab becomes first province to implement child policy: CM
LAHORE: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that Punjab has become the first province to implement child protection policy for the safe future of children. She highlighted, 'Punjab is ensuring the protection of children's rights by establishing the first Virtual Child Safety Station.' The Chief Minister in her message on the World Day Against Child Labour said, 'Child labour is absolutely intolerable, children are my red line. In today's era, incidents of child labour are a colossal tragedy for humanity. Forced child labour is a moment of grave concern for the conscious citizens of the society.' She highlighted, 'Children should have pens, books and laptops in their hands instead of tools and bricks. Children who are forced to bear the burden of forced child labour at a tender age instead of holding a pen in their hands is a big question mark for every civilized society.' She outlined, 'If the childhood of an innocent child is not protected, the society will be deprived of useful citizens in times to come. I deem child labour not just a problem as it will put at stake bright future of our coming generations. Effective steps are being taken to eliminate child labour.' The CM emphasized, 'The Punjab government is taking effective measures against child labour. They are being freed from forced labour and are driven towards attaining education.
