Giant carp angler spent 18 months preparing for 'surreal' catch

BBC News14-05-2025

An angler who caught a massive 105lb (47.5kg) common carp said 18 months of preparation went into the "surreal" moment.David Knock, an insurance broker from Billericay, Essex, was on holiday with friends at Euro Aqua carp farm in Hungary when he made the heavyweight catch, which has been described as a world record."You couldn't dream it, it was unbelievable," he told the BBC.Mr Knock said he had trained in local fields near his home and practised long-range fishing using new reels, new rods and a corner flag "from the old football days", to develop his technique for "hours and hours".
The carp, which weighed the equivalent of a 13-year-old child, is said by fishing publication Angling Times to have beaten the previous world record by 1lb (450g).Mr Knock said it was 1.2m (47in) in length and 42cm (17in) wide."It was a proper effort it took to get it up to the cameras and I only held it for a few seconds initially, because the actual shock of holding it was immense," he added."I've never felt anything like it. It's like holding up a 50kg bag of cement - you can't hold it at arm's length. "I cuddled that carp."
Mr Knock said his son had remarked: "Well you've completed carp fishing now, what are you going to do?""I said to him, 'I absolutely haven't'. Some are lovely looking, some are harder to catch," Mr Knock laughed."There's still room for improvement, albeit very unlikely."

Liverpool complete second signing of the summer as Arne Slot looks to bolster Premier League winning squad

Liverpool have completed their second signing of the summer as they look to bolster their squad which won the Premier League. Arne Slot 's side romped to Premier League victory and have been quick to add extra depth as they look to defend their title and challenge in Europe. They have now signed 20-year-old goalkeeper Armin Pecsi from Hungarian side Puskas Akademia in a deal which could reach £1.5million. Pecsi was nominated for the 2025 Golden Boy award and has represented Hungary at Under-21 level. He played 36 times in all competitions last season for his Puskas Akademia as they finished in second behind Robbie Keane's Ferencvaros. The goalkeeper also appeared in the Europa Conference League, before being knocked out by semi-finalists Fiorentina. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) June 7, 2025 Liverpool have completed their second summer signing with a £1.5million deal for Armin Pecsi He completed a medical at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre and will join Slot's goalkeeping ranks just days after Caoimhin Kelleher departed to Brentford in an £18m deal. Last week, Liverpool scooped Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen to complete their first transfer of the window. The club activated his £29.5m release clause and the right wing back penned a five-year contract at Anfield after completing his medical last month. His challenge is to fill the boots of Trent Alexander-Arnold. But Frimpong's record speaks glowingly of his potential. The 24-year-old has scored 28 goals in the last three seasons and assisted a further 35. The Reds are also hoping to wrap up a deal for German playmaker Florian Wirtz. The 22-year-old, also of Leverkusen, is regarded as one of Europe's hottest talents. A deal between the two clubs is reportedly closed to being agreed, with the playmaker set to sign a five-year contract, where he is expected to earn up to £18.5million-a-year. Liverpool remain in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over a price for Wirtz and while talks are ongoing, an agreement is considered certain, according to Bild. Leverkusen want £120million and Liverpool have offered £109m but Wirtz has made it clear he wants the move. Wirtz looks set to complete his medical next week and will go on holiday before linking up with the squad for pre-season in July. The German star has been convinced by Arne Slot's clear plan of where he will play in Liverpool's set-up as a No 10. And on Wednesday, Wirtz appeared to nod when asked by MailSport if he was 'excited for Liverpool' after Germany's Nations League defeat by Portugal. If Liverpool accept Bayer's demands, Wirtz would become the most expensive signing in British football, overtaking the £115m Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo. Slot's side are also in talks with Bournemouth for the highly-rated £40m left-back Milos Kerkez.

Kenya's Chebet nears 5000m world record at Rome Diamond League

Rome, June 6 (Reuters) - Kenyan Beatrice Chebet came close to breaking the women's 5000 metres world record on Friday at the Rome Diamond League when she clocked 14:03.69, a meeting record that was just 2.5 seconds shy of Gudaf Tsegay's 1997 world mark of 14:00.21. Chebet, who recorded the second-fastest ever time in the women's 3000 metres – running 8:11.56 in Rabat last month behind Wang Junxia's 8:06.11 set in 1993 – appears determined to shave further seconds off her times. "I can see that my body is in good shape and that I am capable of achieving the world record. Now I am going home to prepare for it. Everything is possible," the 25-year-old said after the race. Jamaica's Andrenette Knight dominated the women's 400m hurdles, finishing in 53.67 seconds, while American Anavia Battle won the women's 200 metres in 22.53 seconds. Irish Sarah Healey triumphed in the 1500 metres with a time of 3:59.17. The men's 110m hurdles produced the evening's closest finish, with Swiss athlete Jason Joseph clocking 13.14 and snatching victory from American Cordell Tinch, who finished in the same time. There was also a nail-bitting race in the men's 400 metres, with American Quincy Hall finishing in 44.22 seconds, just a hundredth of a second ahead of South Africa's Zakithi Nene. "I have been working hard. We are coming there. I want to be the best. It is coming down. You do not know about the time, but it is coming down this year," Quincy said. In the men's 1500 metres, France's Azeddine Habz surged in the closing stages to beat former world champion Kenya's Timothy Cheruiyot. Habz won by three-hundredths of a second with a time of 3:29.72, while Cheruiyot finished in 3:29.75. American Trayvon Bromell claimed victory in the 100 metres, finishing in 9.84 seconds, while Tokyo Olympics high jump gold medallist Gianmarco Tamberi failed to reach the podium as South Korea's Woo Sanghyeok took the win with a jump of 2.32 metres.
