Pav declares he's ‘Fremantle forever' amid Swans move
The 353-gamer was revealed on Wednesday as the new chief executive for the Sydney Swans in a shock move that will see the greatest Docker of all time trade in purple for red.
Despite building an established reputation in the media after retirement, Pavlich said he belonged back in the league.
'I've said it on the record a couple of times, while I've loved the last 10 years or thereabouts in media and in business, the pullback to a football club or the pullback to AFL was really, really strong,' he said on Nova.
'I have had some opportunities that I've pursued or at least explored, or been approached about over that period, but not one of them was the right timing, or none of them were an opportunity of this magnitude.' It wasn't until the prospect of Sydney's top job coming up for the sixth time All-Australian that he seriously considered a move.
'When I got that random text message on a Saturday morning saying 'hey I'm in town... can we have a chat', I said to Lauren (Pavlich), 'we might want to think about this one a bit more seriously',' Pavlich said.
'It moved really quickly over the last three or four weeks to a point where it's an emotional time for us because it's exciting, it's an adventure.'
Now Pavlich will take over the position from outgoing CEO Tom Harley, who at the end of this season will join the AFL executive as the new league chief operating officer.
The 43-year-old said that his allegiance still lies with the club that he played for his entire AFL career.
'I'll always be a Fremantle person,' he said.
'I certainly still have strong feelings for Fremantle and always will, so that'll never leave me, and I am a Fremantle person forever.'
Coming in to the role with little experience in the field, Pavlich has big shoes to fill as he takes charge of one of the most storied clubs in the league.
The Hall of Famer plans to use his nine-years of experience as the Freo captain as a guide for the new role.
'The way that I'll lead (is) through strong integrity, strong influence on the people, I'll do what I'll say I want to do,' he said.
'I think my style is to be collaborative, but then really quickly, action oriented and decisive.
'I'll use all the experiences I've had, no only in the football life but more recently in the commercial world, to understand that strong stability and strength off the field often drives really high success on the field, and the club's been great at that.'

But as I said, I'm sure the board went through a thorough process.' 'That was the (only) reason I got; that they needed a new voice.' The two-time Adelaide premiership player had a decorated career across his 275-game career, and has now spent well over a decade as a coach in the AFL system — making him a prime target for all clubs looking ahead to 2026. Shock sector driving the Aussie economy
Australia's economy is getting a surprising boost from the wellness sector, which has quietly grown to one of the nation's leading sectors. According to a new report by Global Wellness Institute, Australia ranks seventh in the world when it comes to spending on their healthcare. In total this added $194.4bn in 2023, up 10.9 per cent year on year or around $7,402 per person. Wellness now makes up seven per cent of Australia's GDP, placing it behind the construction sector. Currently the construction industry accounts for around 9 per cent of GDP and employs more than 1.3 million people. Australians are spending billions to stay fit. 'When you consider our population, Australia is punching above its weight and has pioneered many wellness communities that support healthy lifestyles, vibrant social connections, and sustainable living in its growing housing markets,' Mr Thompson said. Mr Thompson said the push was coming from younger Aussies. 'Gyms, instead of pubs and clubs, are now often the number one choice for weekend outings, and even dates,' he said. 'Gen Z now spends seven times the amount of money on getting fit than Gen X.' According to the report, Australia's overall wellness growth is coming across a number of sub-sectors. Wellness tourism has swelled by 32.9 per cent between 2019 to 2023 while thermal/mineral springs are up 21.5 per cent. The report comes as prime minister Anthony Albanese separately spruiks the benefit to Australia reviving its building and manufacturing sectors. During a doorstop in the electorate of Bonner in Brisbane the prime minster and Energy Minister Chris Bowen talked up the home battery incentive and solar panel uptake. 'It's good for everyone because what it does is take pressure off the grid during peak times, and that's why this is such good public policy, good for households … of course, good right throughout Australia,' Mr Albanese says. According to the ministers, 28,000 Australian homes have installed a home battery under the government's policy. But Mr Albanese wants more Australians to take up the scheme and for the panels to be built in Australia. 'Chris (Bowen) was at the South Australian factory producing solar panels earlier this week, or at the end of last week, that's expanding by nine times,' Mr Albanese said. 'We also want to produce more things here. We have everything that goes into a battery. One of the progress we have is for battery manufacturing.' Mr Albanese went further calling for more large infrastructure projects such as trains and boats to be built in Australia. 'We want things made here and here in Queensland. I want more manufacturing, more jobs to be created here.'
