Terence Stamp, English actor known for ‘Superman' and ‘The Limey,' dies at 87

Washington Post3 hours ago
Terence Stamp, who famously played the arch-villain General Zod in the first two 'Superman' films, died Sunday at the age of 87.
His death was confirmed by a representative, after his family released a statement.
Stamp, was an acclaimed English leading man turned character actor, whose intense, sky-blue gaze sizzled on the silver screen for decades.
His performance in the 1962 film 'Billy Budd,' based on the Herman Melville novel 'Moby Dick,' earned him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for 'Best Newcomer.' Just 24 when the film was released, Stamp managed to stand out in a year that saw an uncanny number of cinema classics released, including 'Lawrence of Arabia,' 'The Manchurian Candidate' and 'Cape Fear.'
The son of a tugboat stoker, Stamp emerged as one of the defining stars of British cinema throughout the 1960s, known as much for his offscreen romances with actress Julie Christie and Englishsupermodel Jean Shrimpton as he was for his brilliant, leading roles.
But for international audiences, the ultimate Stamp villain was the ultra-ambitious alien General Zod in 'Superman' (1978). Stamp said he accepted the part because he wanted to work opposite Marlon Brando. Before then, he had stepped away from acting to become a swami in India.
'When the 1960s ended, I just ended with it,' Stamp told the Guardian in 2015 about his pre- 'Superman' acting drought. 'I remember my agent telling me: 'They're all looking for a young Terence Stamp.''
The first Superman film was something of a rebirth for the actor, who had become used to being a leading man. 'I just decided I was a character actor now and I can do anything,' he said. Stamp would reprise his turn as General Zod in 1980, for 'Superman II.'
For the next 40 years, Stamp and his 'unsettlingly intense stare' appeared on film. In 1994′s 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,' he played a middle-aged transgender woman named Bernadette. The movie drew mixed reviews at the time, but Stamp was widely considered the film's 'chief asset.'
Stamp also starred in Steven Soderbergh's 'The Limey' alongside Peter Fonda. 'Terence Stamp builds up such a head of angry steam … it's a wonder the theater ceiling doesn't blister,' a Washington Post review declared in 1999.
More recently, Stamp appeared in the 2021 Edgar Wright-directed horror thriller 'Last Night in Soho' — fittingly, an homage to 1960s London.

Natalie Portman Reveals Why Filming the ‘Black Swan' Sex Scene With Mila Kunis Made Them ‘Nervous'

In 2010, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis rocked the movie theaters with their psychological ballet thriller, Black Swan. The film won Portman an Oscar for Best Actress, and it's hard to believe that 15 years have passed since the women stepped into the physically and mentally challenging roles. Portman and Kunis are now looking back on their time working on director Darren Aronofsky's project for Vogue — and of course, that steamy sex scene between them. Portman admitted it was 'the only scene that was quite hard to shoot.' More from SheKnows Alison Brie & Dave Franco's Hot Take on Hollywood's Controversial Intimacy Coordinator Conversation 'I learned that it's fun to work with your friend until you have to film a sex scene with them,' recalled Portman. 'I remember Darren being like, 'You guys only have to do it once and you won't have to do it again.'' Aronofsky might have made it sound like a walk in the park, but Portman revealed that they 'were both standing in the room like [heavy, nervous breathing] until Darren yelled action, and we just went for it.' The good news is that the director 'kept his word' and only made them film that scene once. Still, Portman remembered her hesitations, 'But that was definitely the one scene where I remember getting to set and thinking, 'I don't feel good about this.'' Kunis has a much different recollection about the sex scene, though. 'To tell you the truth, I completely forgot about that scene,' she laughed, per Vogue. 'I was just quickly thinking through the movie like, 'Hmm what was hard?' I totally blocked that out.' The film was notable to Portman because she also met Benjamin Millepied on the set of Black Swan. At the time, he was a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet when he worked on the movie. His relationship with Portman started while he was reportedly still living with American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Isabella Boylston. Portman and Millepied married in August 2012 and share two children: son Aleph, 14, and daughter Amalia, 8. Anthony Mackie on Filming 'Avengers: Doomsday' in London: 'A Lot of Sheep...It's Crazy'

Anthony Mackie gave fans a much-anticipated update on the state of filming for the 2026 movie Avengers: Doomsday. However, it was his comments about London, where filming is taking place, that may have taken the cake. During an interview with ScreenRant, Mackie was asked where things stand with filming and if it was close to wrapping. Not surprisingly, the Captain America actor kicked things off there by letting fans know they aren't even close to the final stretch of filming. Anthony Mackie Gives 'Avengers: Doomsday' Update, Also Can't Believe London's 'Crazy' Amount of Sheep If you thought that an Avengers: Doomsday filming update would never land in the same conversation as London's apparent overload of sheep, think again. While Mackie responded to the question of whether the Marvel film is close to wrapping with a blunt, "Absolutely no, hell no" response, he expanded a bit from there. "We're in the midst of such a big moving set piece, and it's such a big story," Mackie said. "Shooting a Marvel movie, the best part is it's always an ever-evolving canvas. There are those staple pieces, then there are the pieces that kind of circulate throughout the course of the it's going well." Mackie then proceeded to dive into how things are in London, by first stating that "London is so that's a thing." The Marvel star quickly shifted to his surprise at finding out how many sheep London has, and his priceless reaction was my favorite part of the clip, personally. "A lot of sheep. Who knew there were so many sheep in London?!" Mackie said. "There's a lot of sheep...a lot of sheep. It's crazy." To Mackie's credit, it's fair to assume he's logging heavy hours on the set for Avengers: Doomsday, so maybe he's just taking time to enjoy the small things around London—like the sheep. Marvel Yet to Address Several Unanswered Questions About 'Avengers: Doomsday' There's no shortage of excitement around Marvel's latest addition to the Avengers series, but there are many unanswered questions fans hope to get answers to. When Marvel unveiled the cast of Avengers: Doomsday on a roughly 5-6 hour live stream, speculation began that the entire list of names wasn't released. That belief was proven correct later, but Marvel still hasn't confirmed the full, lengthy list of names that'll appear. Among the specific names referenced frequently is a star currently filming his own superhero movie—Tom Holland and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Holland's name wasn't listed on the initial cast release for Avengers: Doomsday, and little information has been provided by Marvel thus far. There's still plenty of time to speculate on names and possible superhero cameos in the new film, as Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, Mackie on Filming 'Avengers: Doomsday' in London: 'A Lot of Crazy' first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 7, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

‘Avengers' Star Anthony Mackie Seen Kissing 'Mystery Woman,' Fueling Girlfriend Speculation

While filming for the highly anticipated 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday rolls on in London, one of the film's biggest stars made some off-set news when spotted with a mystery woman on Wednesday, Aug. 13. Anthony Mackie, the new Captain America actor, made his debut in the role earlier in 2025 in the film Captain America: Brave New World. Although Mackie has teased small bits of Avengers: Doomsday, he appears to have used some downtime from filming to link up with a new potential interest. The photos/video that were released immediately sparked girlfriend rumors for the 46-year-old actor. Anthony Mackie Seen Getting Close With 'Mystery Woman' As seen in the photos above, Mackie was close with the new woman, who has yet to be identified. Shortly after the photos were released, a video surfaced that appeared to give a more detailed look at the pair. While little has been revealed about who the woman is, it's noteworthy as Mackie has largely kept his personal life private. Mackie was previously married in 2014 to longtime girlfriend and childhood sweetheart Sheletta Chapital, but the two divorced in 2018, so he's currently single. Anthony Mackie's Latest Updates on 'Avengers: Doomsday' Filming During a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Mackie gave an update on filming for Avengers: Doomsday. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, he revealed the movie is "absolutely" not close to wrapping up filming. "Absolutely no, hell no," Mackie replied when asked if filming was close to wrapping. "We're in the midst of such a big moving set piece, and it's such a big story," Mackie said. "Shooting a Marvel movie, the best part is it's always an ever-evolving canvas. There are those staple pieces, then there are the pieces that kind of circulate throughout the course of the it's going well." After initially setting a release date of May 1, 2026, Marvel moved the release date of Avengers: Doomsday back to Dec. 18, 2026. This will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which was also pushed back, and will now be released on Dec. 7, 2027, after being initially scheduled for May 7, 2027.'Avengers' Star Anthony Mackie Seen Kissing 'Mystery Woman,' Fueling Girlfriend Speculation first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 14, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword
