Yankees tie club record with 9 home runs in 13-3 win over Rays

Associated Press9 hours ago
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger both hit two home runs, Aaron Judge launched his 40th of the season and the New York Yankees matched a franchise record with nine longballs Tuesday night in a 13-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Judge, Bellinger and Stanton went back-to-back-to-back in the first inning to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead four batters into the game — after the first pitch was delayed nearly two hours by rain.
José Caballero connected twice for his first career multihomer game. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ben Rice also went deep for the Yankees, who won their fourth straight and looked awfully comfortable in a road game at their spring training home.
New York took full advantage of the cozy dimensions before a crowd of 10,046 at George M. Steinbrenner Field, where the Rays are playing while Tropicana Field undergoes repairs.
Bellinger went 4 for 5 with three RBIs.

Ex-Yankees Prospect Making Team Regret Trading Him For Failed Reliever

The New York Yankees traded for Devin Williams this offseason, and the move has turned out worse than anyone could have imagined. Williams was a two-time All-Star with the Milwaukee Brewers. He is also a two-time Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award winner. However, with the Yankees, he has a 5.32 ERA and has been removed from the closer's role. Not only is he no longer the closer, but he is not even being trusted in leverage situations. He will be a free agent after the year, and likely will be playing elsewhere. However, to make matters worse, one of the players traded away is a key player on the best team in baseball right now. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - AUGUST 6: Caleb Durbin #21 of the Milwaukee Brewers smiles during batting practice before the game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on August 6, 2025 in Atlanta, Yankees gave up Caleb Durbin and Nestor Cortes to get Williams. The Brewers flipped Cortes at the trade deadline, but Durbin has become a starter. He has started 86 of the 97 games he has played in after being called up. Durbin is slashing .255/.334/.377 while playing solid defense at third base. Meanwhile, third base for the Yankees has been a real problem. The team traded for Ryan McMahon, but he has not been great. Jazz Chisholm Jr., Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, Jorbit Vivas, Pablo Reyes, José Caballero and J.C. Escarra have also tried to fill the void at third base. Durbin would have been an upgrade for the Yankees. Instead, the Yankees are watching Williams play his way out of the Bronx. Durbin has been solid all season, but recently his offense has surged. In his last 44 games, he has slashed .302/.365/.446 with four home runs and 17 RBIs. The Brewers have the best record in the big leagues, and Durbin is a huge reason why. He has multiple years of club control and could have been a star for the Yankees. He is in the 98th percentile for strikeout percentage and 94th percentile for whiff percentage, per Baseball Savant. He is tough to strike out and can also impact the game with his speed. Right now, it clearly looks like the Brewers won the trade where they gave up an All-Star closer. More MLB: Cubs' Kyle Tucker Has 5-Word Response to Benching After Replacement Shines

Patriots' Kyle Dugger, Anfernee Jennings reportedly available via trade

With Kyle Dugger lining up with second-teamers and Anfernee Jennings playing in the second half of Saturday's preseason game, the writing has been on the wall that both may not be members of the New England Patriots for long. We're now getting some confirmation the team is looking to move both defensive veterans. The Patriots have brought up both players in trade talks this summer, according to a report by Andrew Callahan of The Boston Herald on Tuesday. Dugger, whom the team discussed in talks more recently, has emerged as the likeliest of the two to move ahead of the regular season. The veteran safety signed a four-year, $58 million contract (which included $32.5 million in guaranteed money) with the Patriots last April, but that was under the Jerod Mayo coaching staff. He's fallen on the team's depth chart this summer and was playing with the scout-team defense during Monday's practice. Dugger has played the second half in both of New England's preseason games, and was on the field through the final play in Saturday's win over the Minnesota Vikings. He intercepted the final throw of the game in the end zone to preserve the New England victory, but also tried to do too much on the play and nearly fumbled away the win. Dugger was lucky officials ruled him down before his fumble, which let the Pats hold on for the 20-12 win. If the Patriots don't see Dugger as a fit in Mike Vrabel and Terrell Williams' defense, the team would be much better off trading him than outright releasing him. The Patriots would be hit with $14.25 million in dead money toward the cap if Dugger is released, compared to the $4.5 million hit (and over $10 million savings off the salary cap) that would come if he's traded. Jennings also played into the second half Saturday, but the edge rusher may have saved his bacon with three sacks on the afternoon. There are still questions about his fit in Vrabel and Williams' defense, though Callahan reported the team's exploratory talks about a Jennings trade happened earlier this summer. Patriots VP of player personnel Eliot Wolf said earlier this week he's had talks with the 31 other teams about potential trades, though many assumed it was to add to the roster via a blockbuster swing. It sounds like some of those calls were gauging interest in Dugger ahead of the season. Second-year receiver Ja'Lynn Polk is another player on a short leash in New England this summer. He hasn't done much to earn his spot, but at least one other team is getting ready to pounce if the Patriots cut ties with Polk. According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, the Pittsburgh Steelers have "done some homework" on Polk, since he'll likely be cut by New England. Fillipponi threw out the possibility of Pittsburgh sending a seventh-round pick to the Patriots in return for Polk before he potentially hits waivers. The Patriots drafted Polk in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but he caught just 12 of the 33 passes that went his way during his rookie season. He was battling for a roster spot this summer, but suffered an injury in New England's preseason opener against the Washington Commanders.
