Former Rangers midfielder Gennaro Gattuso named Italy head coach
World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso has been appointed Italy head coach.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced the 47-year-old had been handed the reins following Luciano Spalletti's departure.
A statement on the FIGC's official website said: 'The Italian Football Federation announces that it has appointed Gennaro Gattuso as head coach of the Italian national team.
'The Calabrian coach will be presented on Thursday 19 June at 11am at the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Rome.'
Spalletti revealed in the wake of a 3-0 World Cup qualifier defeat in Norway on June 6 that last Monday's home clash with Moldova, which Italy won 2-0, would be his last at the helm.
Former Leicester boss Cladio Ranieri said he had rejected the job as the FIGC looked for Spalletti's successor and it has ultimately turned to 73-cap midfielder Gattuso, a World Cup winner in 2006.
President Gabriele Gravina said: 'Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football. The blue is like a second skin for him.
'His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be essential to better face the next commitments of the national team.
'Aware of the importance of the goal we want to achieve, I thank him for the availability and total dedication with which he has accepted this challenge, sharing the FIGC's project for the overall development of our football, in which the Azzurri jersey plays a strategic role.'
Gattuso enjoyed a glittering playing career which included spells with Rangers and Salernitana before a 13-year stint with AC Milan which brought two Champions League successes and two Serie A titles among a host of honours.
His managerial career to date has taken him back to Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille and he left his most recent post at Croatian club Hajdu Split earlier this month.
Gattuso inherits an squad which lie in third place in World Cup qualifying Group I after their opening two fixtures, with Norway top having taken a maximum 12 points from their four games to date and Israel second on six after three fixtures.
They entertain Estonia in Bergamo on September 5 before facing the Israelis in Debrecen three days later.

Wales bring in Ben Flower to help add steel for World Cup
The 37-year-old from Abertridwr will be part of Sean Lynn's set-up for the summer training campa ahead of a two-Test tour to Australia and then the World Cup. Flower has been appointed as collision coach and has an impressive CV in that department. He played for the Dragons academy and represented Wales at under-20, 18 and 16 level alongside the likes of Dan Lydiate, Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies but then changed code after an attempt to covert him from back row forward to hooker. Flower played for the Celtic Crusaders and then the prop became a key figure for Wigan when winning three Super League titles, the World Club Challenge and the Challenge Cup, while he also won 17 caps. After hanging up his boots, he coached the South Wales Jets rugby league side and was part of the Wales Women's coaching team at the last World Cup in New Zealand. Flower said: 'Being involved with Wales is always a privilege and being asked and to have the chance of being involved with my country is an honour you don't turn down. 'Having played at a World Cup as a player and to have this chance to play a role as Wales prepare for a World Cup is an opportunity I am looking forward to.' Lynn, who is yet to enjoy a victory as national boss, believes Flower will add steel to a side whose fitness he questioned during a miserable Six Nations. He said: 'The W6N review highlighted the need to improve our collision work and dominance, both sides of the ball, as a real area we can improve on.'

Chelsea's £97m Club World Cup bid off to slow start as FIFA suffer humiliation
CHELSEA 2-0 LAFC: Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez scored as the Blues started their Club World Cup campaign with a win, but the game was played in front of a sparse crowd in Atlanta It was not the spectacular showpiece FIFA had been hoping for. Just 22,137 fans turned up and probably wished they had not bothered because Chelsea hardly set the world alight. Pedro Neto got the ball rolling with a first half opener before Chelsea substitute Liam Delap marked his debut with an assist to set up Enzo Fernandez to seal the win. But this was far from the all-singing, all-dancing spectacular we had been promised and instead we got what felt like a pre-season friendly with tired players in front of a stadium not even a third full. Well, what do you expect if you put a game on at 3pm in the middle of a normal Monday afternoon? Funnily enough, most people are at work. It just looks bad because the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta is one of America's truly great stadiums as it holds 71,000 fans and cost over £1billion to build. But the most memorable thing about this remarkable venue and game was the huge swathes of empty red seats which only highlighted the issue of attendances at FIFA's new-look 32 team tournament. In fairness, there were 60,927 for the opening game between Inter Miami and Egyptian champions Al Ahly in Miami and 80,000 for Paris Saint Germain's thumping 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Rose Bowl on Sunday. But you cannot sustain those figures throughout some pretty underwhelming fixtures in this tournament and it feels like what is being seen as a dress rehearsal for next summer could backfire. If this does not go well or fails to grip the crowds, then what message does that send just 12 months before the World Cup is jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Teams have come to win and to play because there is £97m in prize money on offer to the winners and that would be a game-changer for Chelsea. FIFA have inserted into the rules that teams must field their strongest line-ups and Chelsea's line-up looked very familiar with no let-up for their big names. Cole Palmer looked lively, Nicolas Jackson got the nod over Delap who had to be patient and was a second half substitute. Jackson had a good first half and maybe competition can get the best out of both of them. There was also a familiar look about Los Angeles FC as former Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris made a smart save to deny Noni Madueke as it was one-way traffic in Atlanta. The pressure paid off in the 34th minute when Jackson's brilliant pass inside the full back released Neto, the Chelsea winger then turned Los Angeles defender Ryan Hollingshead and drilled a low shot inside Lloris's near post. It was a super finish after a tight offside call but FIFA have got VAR spot on because there was no long delay or waiting around. Just a quick semi-automated offside decision followed by a graphic to tell the crowd it was onside. They did similar when Los Angeles' Nathan Ordaz went off with suspected concussion. The Premier League and English football could learn a lot from FIFA tournaments when it comes to referees, VAR and the speed of decisions. But the start of the second half was delayed while substitute Olivier Giroud scrambled to find his shirt so he could come on. Chelsea brought on Delap just after the hour mark and the new £30m striker showed an urgency and determination to give Maresca's men extra bite up front. Palmer's ball forward found Delap and his cross was put in by half time substitute Fernandez to wrap it up.
