'He just wants to run in, bowl fast day after day...': Flintoff hails pacer Baker on maiden English call-up
Flintoff, who is the head coach of England's developmental Lions squad, was the one who handed Baker his first-class debut during the tour to Australia back in 2025. During the tour, he took eight wickets in two matches.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Flintoff, coaching Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, said, "Sonny Baker has been announced in the squad. Unbelievable."
"He came in, we gave him his first-class debut in Australia. Runs in, bowls quick, but what a joy to work with. He is just a cracking lad. He writes everything down, he hangs on your every word."
"He just wants to run in, bowl fast day after day. As a coach of the Lions, that is what you want to see," he concluded.
During the ongoing The Hundred, Baker has four wickets in four games at an average of just over 23 for Manchester Originals.
England have announced their squads for the limited-overs series against South Africa and Ireland.
With the red-ball leg of the home summer behind them, England will next feature in three ODIs and as many T20Is against the Proteas starting September 2 in Headingley.
The home series will be followed by a three-match contest against Ireland in Malahide from September 17.
Harry Brook, who was appointed England's white-ball captain after the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, will continue to lead in the home series against South Africa.
Meanwhile, Jacob Bethell has been named skipper for the tour of Ireland, with Brook rested for the three-match T20I series.

BCCI introduces serious injury substitute rule after Rishabh Pants injury
New Delhi [India], August 16 (ANI): In a significant step towards player safety, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a serious injury replacement substitute rule in domestic cricket. The regulation, aimed at ensuring players do not risk aggravating injuries, will come into force from the Duleep Trophy starting August 28, which also marks the beginning of the 2025-26 season. The rule will also apply to the Ranji Trophy, India's premier first-class competition, as per this rule, teams will be allowed to bring in a non-playing squad member as a like-for-like replacement, provided the injury is deemed serious. The final approval will rest with the match referee, after the team concerned submits a medical report confirming the nature of the injury. Importantly, the rule only covers injuries sustained during the match and those of an external nature, for example, a fracture or a deep cut caused by an impact rather than internal issues such as a hamstring idea gathered momentum after Rishabh Pant famously batted with a fractured foot against England in Manchester earlier this year. According to the BCCI's regulation, the replacement player must be from the list of substitutes named at the in the case where the wicketkeeper is seriously injured and needs to be replaced, then the match referee may allow a wicketkeeper from a player outside the nominated substitutes if there is no wicketkeeper in the nominated the injured player and the replacement will be considered to have officially played in the match for records and this change, Indian domestic cricket will now act as a testing ground for what could eventually become a global regulation.
