OKC Thunder's Elite Defense Isn't Finished Evolving Yet

Forbes18 hours ago
Last season, on their path to winning an NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder had one of the greatest defenses of all time. Not only did OKC lead the league in Defensive Rating by a wide margin all season, but that end of the floor drove the Thunder's historic point differential and one of the most successful regular seasons ever from a record and Net Rating standpoint.
With that in mind, there's undoubtedly another level this Thunder defense can get to. As great as it was last season, there are still a few tangible things that Oklahoma City can improve on in the upcoming season on that end of the floor.
It's certainly nitpicky to analyze how a historic defense could be better, but it's not out of the question that there is another gear.
For starters, the easiest thing to point to is health. While Oklahoma City was healthy in the postseason, the regular season was a completely different story. This is especially true in the frontcourt, given Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein each missed significant time. The time they missed was also staggered, so the opportunity for both to play alongside each other and anchor the defense at an elite level was limited during the regular season. Furthermore, Alex Caruso not only missed time, but was also load-managed throughout the season to ensure he was healthy and in peak form for the playoffs.
In addition to simply being healthier — which would lead to even higher upside on the defensive end — this is still a very young team that's developing. Holmgren will continue to improve defensively, despite already being one of the best rim protectors in the entire NBA. Cason Wallace will have another opportunity to take a leap on that end of the floor and continue proving he's arguably the most underrated defender in the entire league. And several others could step up and get better. There's a real scenario in which the Thunder has five or six players who are in the conversation for an NBA All-Defensive Team, if healthy.
In terms of the on-court aspects that the Thunder can improve year-over-year on the defensive end, one key area to examine is defensive rebounding. Both in the regular season and in the playoffs, the Thunder's rebound rate was far from good. This made Oklahoma City susceptible to allowing second-chance points to opponents, which was certainly an area the team struggled with overall last season.
Another glaring issue, which is somewhat schematic, is that the Thunder's defensive style allows a high volume of corner threes, which is one of the most efficient shots in the game of basketball. Again, much of this is due to the Thunder's defensive system, which tends to apply pressure at the point of attack, push ball handlers beyond the perimeter, and pick players up high above the break. But regardless, allowing corner threes is a glaring weak spot in the Thunder's defense. If a team finds a way to exploit that, it could become a real issue. Ultimately, the Thunder forces so many turnovers with the style the team plays, that corner threes generally aren't too concerning. But in theory, if a team in a seven-game playoff series found a way to generate a high volume of corner threes — and convert on those — it would certainly be something Oklahoma City would have a hard time overcoming.
The last thing that Oklahoma City could, in theory, improve upon on the defensive end is finding more defensive disruptiveness deeper into the rotation, especially from players who have already proven themselves on the offensive end but are sometimes less impactful defensively. There were times in the playoffs in which players like Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins — as impactful and vital as they were on the offensive end — struggled defensively. With the way Oklahoma City plays, it takes all five guys being effective in their roles, making crisp rotations, and the right reads on the defensive end of the floor. Even if one player fails to meet that expectation, it can severely hinder the team's ability to defend at an elite level. Expect Ajay Mitchell to bring more to the Thunder's reserve unit defensively in the upcoming season, as he is now healthy and more experienced, with a high likelihood of being called upon to do more in his second season.
It will be hard to maintain the elite level of defensive production and efficiency that the Oklahoma City Thunder did last season. Even being close to as good as the team was in the 2024-25 campaign again should be good enough to lead the Thunder to another top seed and a potential championship. But the fact that there are still several tangible ways this historic defense could get even better is something to keep an eye on this upcoming season, as the best team in the league could organically be even better.

Raiders tie Seahawks 23-23 in Pete Carroll's Seattle return

SEATTLE (AP) — Pete Carroll's Seattle return ended without a winner when Jalan Gaines blocked Daniel Carlson's 55-yard field-goal try for Las Vegas as time expired, leaving the Raiders and Seahawks tied at 23 on Thursday night. The 73-year-old Carroll, coaching his first preseason game with the Raiders, was narrowly denied the victory in his return to Seattle, where he led the Seahawks to some of their highest moments. The Raiders did lead a late comeback to secure the tie, with Carlson kicking a 51-yard field goal with about a minute left. It was the third field goal of the game for Carlson, who had a long of 56 yards. He also missed a 55-yarder to end the first half. Carroll coached the Seahawks for 14 years, going 137-89-1 and putting together double-digit victories eight times over a nine-year stretch. He led Seattle to its only Super Bowl victory in 2013. Carroll showed the energetic, outgoing personality he was known for in Seattle before the game, talking with many Seahawks players during warmups. Raiders starting quarterback Geno Smith, who was Seattle's starter the past three seasons, played the opening series for Las Vegas along with most of the offensive starters. Smith completed one of his three passes for 15 yards before making way for Aiden O'Connell, who played into the fourth quarter. O'Connell led all passers, going 18 for 30 for 205 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Most of the Seahawks starters didn't play, including quarterback Sam Darnold, running back Kenneth Walker III and wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Drew Lock opened the game at quarterback for Seattle and played the first half, going 12 for 22 for 147 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Rookie Jalen Milroe, the Seahawks' third-round draft pick, came on for the second half, going 6 for 10 for 61 yards. The Seahawks opened the scoring with a 24-yard touchdown run by George Holani in the final minute of the first quarter, and Lock threw a 10-yard touchdown to Tory Horton in the second quarter, giving the Seahawks a 13-3 lead after the extra point was blocked. Las Vegas got in the end zone for the first time in the third quarter, as O'Connell found Dylan Laube for a 6-yard touchdown pass. Undrafted rookie Jacardia Wright had a 1-yard touchdown run with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter for Seattle. Raiders rookie Cam Miller — the former North Dakota State star — came on at quarterback for the first time in the fourth quarter, and promptly got on the highlight reel with a deep 41-yard touchdown pass to Shedrick Jackson. Big celebrations Seattle had a two interceptions in the second quarter off O'Connell. Josh Jobe got the first on a badly underthrown deep ball and had a 38-yard return. The second came when Nehemiah Pritchett jumped a route and led to a 48-yard field goal by Jason Myers. Beast mode Former running back Marshawn Lynch, who played for both the Seahawks and Raiders, was on the sideline in new role. Lynch was a credentialed photographer for the game, wearing an official vest and taking pictures. He also got a little into the action, as Holani bumped into Lynch after running past the back of the end zone on his touchdown. Up next Raiders: Host San Francisco on Saturday, Aug. 16. Seahawks: Host Kansas City on Friday, Aug. 15. ___ AP NFL:

American Legion baseball celebrates 100 years, puts Fairfield on the map with tournament play

Pitching success in Fairfield, teams from across the western United States are meeting on the field in pursuit of a World Series title. The year 2025 marks a milestone year for American Legion baseball nationwide. Founded in 1925, the league is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The club sport welcomes high school juniors and seniors as well as college freshmen, all 19 years old and younger. The event is putting Fairfield on the map as athletes descend on the town for the double-elimination tournament running from Wednesday through Sunday. "Fairfield is definitely one of the hubs of baseball in the country now," said Brad Hanson, president and manager of the local team, the Fairfield Expos. About 150 athletes and their families are in town to compete on teams from Hawaii, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Utah, California, and Arizona. "It's like little league, but bigger and at a much higher scale," said Hanson. Hanson says college scouts are often in the crowd, and the athletes in the league are dreaming of playing at the collegiate and professional level. In fact, 89 MLB Hall of Famers hail from this league, where big dreams start small. "There's an intimacy to having it in a smaller community versus going to a big city," said Hanson. Fairfield is pushing to become a permanent host for the Western Regional conference. They've already been welcoming athletes and their families every year since 2019, except for 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. "It's where San Francisco meets Sacramento. We have gorgeous weather. Great amenities," said Shifra de Benedictis-Kessner, Fairfield's economic development manager. The tournament pours thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy. "Really, all of our local businesses get to benefit from our restaurants and retail," de Benedictis-Kessner. It also gets new eyes on an award-winning wine scene in the Suisun Valley, which is good news to Visit Fairfield. "Our wine region just won number one wine region in the United States by USA Today last week. We are thrilled to bring in more visitors, whether through sports or leisure, to explore our wonderful destination," said Anand Patel, president of Visit Fairfield. The veterans group American Legion started the league in 1925 to help strengthen America and build up thousands of young men into leaders in their sport, classrooms, communities and careers. The American Legion and the local Yoche Dehe Wintun Nation cover all the costs and travel for the teams. The tournament wraps up on Sunday night. The winner will travel to North Carolina next week for the league's World Series.
