According to Craig Counsell, the Chicago Cubs announced Wednesday that reliever Porter Hodge would be placed on the injured list with a shoulder injury.

Hodge and many on the Cubs' pitching staff have had a tough go with injuries. The young reliever had a 2.00 ERA across nine innings through his first nine appearances.
His first injury came in May, and at that point, his ERA had risen to 5.12, but he had allowed just two earned runs all season outside of two rough appearances.

The 24-year-old was put on the injured list with a left oblique injury. In the recovery, he had a setback that revealed a left hip impingement.
Over a month later, Hodge returned to the mound on June 25, but only pitched twice between then and July 4.
This past weekend, Hodge finally got some regular action, pitching in three of the last five days. However, on Tuesday night, the Cubs' reliever could only manage one out while giving up six runs on three home runs.

A day later, the Cubs have placed him on the 15-day injured list with a shoulder issue. To replace Hodge, the Cubs recalled Ethan Roberts.
"I don't think it's anything major, but we're dealing with a little shoulder stuff," Counsell told Spiegel & Holmes on The 670 Score. "We got to get it out of there and have him clear-headed."
Roberts will join the Cubs at the major league level as Hodge recovers from injury. The 28-year-old reliever has pitched in nine games this season for Chicago to the tune of a 5.40 ERA. He also saw action in 21 games in 2024, putting together a 3.71 ERA.
As for Hodge, hopefully, the young pitcher can fully recover from his injury. With his strong start to the season, he competed for a role in the back-end of the Cubs' bullpen before his injuries. Chicago could use that version of Hodge down the stretch of the season.

Red Sox Trade Idea Lands 2.41 ERA Closer

Red Sox Trade Idea Lands 2.41 ERA Closer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox have a few areas to address at the trade deadline. The question is, where will they turn their attention? Previously viewed as a wasteful season, the Red Sox have flipped the script and enter the second half on a 10-game win streak. Boston has boosted its record to 53-45, just one game behind the New York Yankees and just three games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League East lead. One potential target is Baltimore Orioles closer Félix Bautista, who could be on the move, especially considering their lackluster 43-52 record. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic wrote this about Bautista's availability: 'The Orioles… are listening on closer Félix Bautista, who is under club control for two additional seasons. A source briefed on the team's plans, however, said it was unlikely [Bautista] would be traded.' While Baltimore may not ship its top reliever to a division rival, the Red Sox have so many prospects that they could make an irresistible offer. It would have to look something like this: Red Sox receive: RHP Félix Bautista Orioles receive: RHP Richard Fitts, OF James Tibbs III (No. 5) Bautista did miss all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he has bounced back nicely with a 2.41 ERA, a 3.17 FIP, 18 saves, and 48 strikeouts to 20 walks over 33 and 2/3 innings. Fitts (4.28 ERA, 5.19 FIP) has had his moments in his first full campaign as a starting pitcher for Boston, and sacrificing him would seriously strain this starting rotation. The Red Sox would have to rely on either bullpen games or Tanner Houck, who is still not back from the injured list, to erase the absence. Tibbs was the main prospect return from the San Francisco Giants in the Rafael Devers trade and would make for another tantalizing piece on that young Baltimore crew. The price is steep, but Bautista is elite, and there is no telling what pending free agent Aroldis Chapman might do after the story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 18, 2025, where it first appeared.

MLB rumors: 4 teams emerge as frontrunners for Eugenio Suarez trade

The post MLB rumors: 4 teams emerge as frontrunners for Eugenio Suarez trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. As the rumors swirl around Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of the trade deadline on Thursday evening, there is no doubt that many are considering the star to be the most coveted slugger on the market. Though Suarez suffered a hand injury, it hasn't hurt his stock as the latest report suggests the teams that are in the running for the 34-year-old. MLB insider Mark Feinsand took to social media to label the four ball clubs who 'are considered the primary teams' to be in the running for Suarez. It seems that the final four teams that are gunning for Suarez are the Seattle Mariners, the Chicago Cubs, the Detroit Tigers, and the Philadelphia Phillies. 'The market for Eugenio Suárez is beginning to shape up with less than 30 hours until the Trade Deadline,' Feinsand wrote on X, formerly Twitter. 'Per sources, the Mariners, Cubs, Tigers, and Phillies are considered the primary teams in the race for the All-Star third baseman.' Major interest in Eugenio Suarez around the league As teams have discussed Suarez in a potential deal ahead of Thursday, the teams listed by Feinsand do fall in line with previous reports. Looking at the Tigers, Tony Paul reports on social media that Arizona had a scout out to watch their Double-A team. 'The Diamondbacks had a scout in Erie, home of the #Tigers Double-A affiliate, all week long, I'm hearing,' Paul wrote on X. 'Now, also worth noting, Erie was playing the #Yankees affiliate. Both DET and NYY have had interest in Eugenio Suarez. Yankees seemingly passed on a steep asking price.' Another MLB insider in Jon Heyman, would also mention Seattle and Chicago as being two teams that 'have been in it all along' in regards to having major interest in Suarez, per Bleacher Report. 'I still think it's probably– I'm gonna guess the Mariners or the Cubs,' Heyman said. 'Those two teams have been in it all along… I think both teams have prospects to get it done. So I think one of those two is probably the most likely.' It remains to be seen where Suarez ends up, but it will be soon as the trade deadline is on Thursday evening.
