Sidcup mum's horror as baby falls critically ill after swallowing Vicks VapoRub
On Saturday, May 3, Carly Lloyd's baby, Poppy, managed to grab an open pot of the popular menthol ointment from her mum's handbag.
In the blink of an eye, she touched her mouth with a finger that had barely skimmed the inside of the pot - but it was enough to trigger a terrifying chain of events.
'She was shaking her head and really confused, literally just staring at us and staring at the ceiling,' Carly told the News Shopper.
'Her body started going stiff, then her eyes just rolled up towards the air, and all of a sudden, she'd come out of that and then scream.
'But she went literally stiff as a pan in my husband's arms.'

Vicks VapoRub is commonly used to relieve coughs and congestion, but contains camphor - a substance that, in even small quantities, can be highly toxic to children.
A few teaspoons of camphor can be fatal to a toddler.
Carly said she immediately pulled Poppy's hand from her mouth and wiped around her lips with a muslin.
'I'm trying to raise awareness around this because there's nothing on the pot that tells you,' she said.
A spokesperson for P&G, owners of Vicks VapoRub, said the packaging 'clearly states' that the product should be kept out of the reach of children, and should not be used on children under the age of two.
The spokesperson added: 'We'd like to provide reassurance that our products are safe when used as intended.'
After initially appearing fine, Poppy became violently ill within two hours.

Carly said she called 999 and was advised by paramedics to monitor her daughter closely since the amount ingested was so small.
But things escalated quickly.
Carly added: 'She started screaming and vomiting.
'Then she just went rigid and limp.
'I was obviously very, very upset.
'The paramedic said this stuff could kill her, but she wasn't going to die.'
Poppy was taken to Princess Royal University Hospital. (Image: Carly Lloyd)
An ambulance took the family to Princess Royal University Hospital where doctors monitored Poppy until she was discharged later that evening at 10.30pm.
While Poppy appeared back to normal that night, Carly said the nightmare wasn't over.
She explained: 'The next morning she was acting strange again – screaming, grabbing her head with both hands.
'If it had been the tiniest bit more she could have died.'
'I was petrified.
'I thought it was killing her brain and giving her brain damage. I thought it was attacking her brain and there would be no coming back from it.'
The mum-of-four is now urging other parents to be aware of the risks and says warning labels on products like Vicks VapoRub should be clearer about the dangers of ingestion in young children.
A P&G spokesperson said: 'We were really sorry to hear about this unfortunate accident and acknowledge the distress it must have caused the family.
'The safety and well-being of those who use our products is our utmost priority.
'We'd like to provide reassurance that our products are safe when used as intended.
'Our packaging clearly states that this product should be kept out of the reach of children, should not be used on children under the age of two and provides helpful guidance on what to do if the product is accidentally ingested."

Lidl issues urgent ‘do not eat' warning over popular product amid allergy fear
A major UK supermarket has issued a product recall with a 'do not eat' warning for one if its popular meals. Lidl GB has told consumers who bought the Red Hen 4 Tempura Chicken Steaks 380g to check whether they are part of the affected batch. The product is being recalled because milk has not been boldened in the ingredients section - with the supermarket warning this could pose a health risk to people intolerant to milk. 'Lidl GB is recalling the above-mentioned product due to milk not being in bold within the back of pack ingredients,' the supermarket said in its product recall notice. 'This may be a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to milk. 'If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to milk we advise you not to eat it. 'Customers are asked to return this product to the nearest store where a full refund will be given.' The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the product 'contains milk making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents'. 'Lidl is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall,' the FSA added. 'The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.' The recall only applies to the packs with the following 'best before' dates: 11/12/2026 16/12/2026 22/12/2026 30/12/2026 16/01/2027

UK has got fat on the free labour of women, says Jess Phillips
The UK has got 'fat' from the free labour of women, Jess Phillips has said. The minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls said the country has relied on women providing charity for decades. She said it was a 'fundamentally sexist' practice that meant Government was less willing to provide the service itself. She said she 'hated' the title of her role and added that safeguarding against gender-based violence should be 'business as usual in every single Government department'. The Birmingham Yardley MP suggested there was an issue in Whitehall where Government departments viewed violence against women and girls as solely a Home Office issue. Ms Phillips said she had to push for the safety of women and girls to be a 'mainstream concern', which she said had not always made her 'popular as a Government minister'. Asked what pushback she had received from ministers or civil servants, she said: 'People directly say things like, 'That's the Home Office's job'. 'Why is it my job to do healthy relationship education in schools? Why is it my job to provide mental health support for whatever reason it is that you ended up in that [situation]?'. 'Do you know what it is? Free labour of women is where it comes from. 'It comes from a fundamentally sexist place in that women didn't have these services, so a load of women across the country got together and made these services and offered them to other women for free, and they didn't get paid for their labour. 'So they put down a mattress and made a refuge. They set up counselling services and got people who were trained to be therapists and got their voluntary hours and set it up for free.' Ms Phillips said people do not recognise how 'heavily' the UK has relied on women providing support that previously did not exist which has suggested an impact on the willingness of Government to provide these services. She added: 'Nobody offered diabetes medicine for free. Pharmaceutical companies didn't go, 'Wow, this is really important. People will die without this. We'll just give it away for free'. 'That is what the women in our country did in the 1960s and 1970s and 1980s and we got fat on that expectation that that service will be provided for free. 'And we also belittled it as an issue that wasn't absolutely, fundamentally mainstream to the safety and security of our nation. 'Undoing that is really hard and it's going to take a long time.'
