BFI funding halted by sports ministry amid election row
NEW DELHI: The sports ministry has initiated action against the
Boxing Federation of India
(BFI) for its inability to conduct its elections within the stipulated time frame. TOI has learnt that the ministry recently halted its funding to the federation, which was previously allocated for organising national camps and domestic championships.
In a recent step, the funds were instead directly provided to the
Sports Authority of India
(SAI)-run
NIS Patiala
, where the country's boxers are currently stationed. Under the ministry's 'Scheme of Assistance to NSFs', it acts as the main financier for NSFs. On this occasion, rather than disbursing the funds to BFI, the ministry directed the NIS management to utilise the money for the smooth running of the coaching camp and to arrange an appropriate diet for the pugilists. 'We don't want the boxers and coaches to suffer in this federation's stand-off.

The BFI's office-bearers are busy fighting each other in different courts of the country, looking to seize control of the federation. The BFI needs to hold its elections at the earliest…the ministry is clear about it,' a ministry source said.

This action by the ministry comes as a result of the federation's continued postponement of elections, which have been due since Feb 2 this year. The BFI, at present, is governed by a sixmember committee appointed by
World Boxing
(WB), with current president Ajay Singh acting as its chairman. Singh, who is pursuing a third term at the helm of the federation, has abstained from holding the elections amid concerns that the majority of state member associations may not support him.
Previously, the returning officer (RO) appointed by the Singh-led BFI, former Delhi high court judge R K Gauba, stepped down from his position, citing an 'unhealthy and uncalled for smear campaign' against him by various factions within the federation. The committee formed by the sport's global governing body has been given a 90-day mandate to function, though there is no set timeline for electing new office-bearers for the term 2025-2029.
The elections were rescheduled for March 28 on Himachal high court's order but have since been postponed indefinitely.

Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu orders shifting of stray cattle
Dharwad: Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu has directed the HDMC and other local bodies in the district to initiate action to remove the stray cattle occupying the roads and other public places and send them to goshalas. Taking a serious note of the report, DC Divya who chaired a district level meeting of officials from the police, veterinary, revenue and HDMC said the stray cattle should be sent to goshalas. "If the cattle found occupying a road or public place belongs to an owner, he should penalised and punished as per the law. The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 stupulates imposing a fine of Rs 3 lakh and imprisonment upto five years" the DC said. The DC directed the officials to ensure that animal slaughter is done in places that have been permitted as per law and not at unauthorised places. Task force formed The DC also constituted task forces under the chairmanship of tahasildar's of respective taluks to oversee the proper implementation of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 during Bakrid which will be observed on June 7. The meeting was attended by all the tahasildars, veterinary department officers, police officers and others.

Bareilly: The Bareilly district administration has enforced stringent guidelines to maintain law and order and uphold communal harmony during Eid-ul-Azha on Friday. District magistrate Avneesh Singh issued instructions prohibiting animal sacrifice in public spaces and warned that posting photos or videos of such acts on social media would result in strict legal consequences. "Sanitation teams from municipal corporations and local urban bodies have been deployed with area-specific responsibilities. Their work will be closely monitored to ensure cleanliness throughout the festival," Singh said. Authorities also announced that Eid prayers would be permitted only at designated Eidgahs or prayer grounds. "Offering prayers on roads or in public places will not be allowed under any circumstances," the DM added. To curb the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content, cyber cell units and police will actively monitor social media platforms. Officials have been instructed to take immediate action against any provocative posts, rumors, or communal targeting. Meanwhile, Sambhal district magistrate Dr Rajendra Pensiya issued a similar directive permitting animal sacrifice only at 19 designated locations. Sacrifice in open or public areas is strictly banned, with violators subject to legal action. Farmaan Hasan Khan, national secretary of the Muslim organisation Jamaat Raza-e-Mustafa, appealed to community members to fully adhere to the administration's advisory. "We urge everyone to carry out sacrifices in enclosed areas, maintain hygiene, and avoid sharing any images or videos online," he told TOI.
