NEW DELHI - India shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and one other military aircraft during clashes in May, India's air force chief said on Saturday, in the first such public claim by the country after its worst military conflict in decades with its neighbour.
Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif rejected the statement, saying India had not hit or destroyed a single Pakistani aircraft.
At an event in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, Indian Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh said most of the Pakistani aircraft were downed by India's Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile system. He cited electronic tracking data as confirmation of the strikes.
"We have at least five fighters confirmed killed, and one large aircraft," he said, adding that the large aircraft, which could be a surveillance plane, was shot down at a distance of 300 km (186 miles).
"This is actually the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill," he said, prompting applause from the crowd that included serving air force officers, veterans, and government and industry officials.
Singh did not mention the type of fighter jets that were downed, but said that airstrikes also hit an additional surveillance plane and "a few F-16" fighters that were parked in hangars at two air bases in southeastern Pakistan.
In a post on X, Pakistan's defence minister accused India of dishonesty.

"If the truth is in question, let both sides open their aircraft inventories to independent verification - though we suspect this would lay bare the reality India seeks to obscure," he said.
"Such comical narratives, crafted for domestic political expediency, increase the grave risks of strategic miscalculation in a nuclearised environment."
Islamabad, whose air force primarily operates Chinese-made jets and U.S. F-16s, has previously denied that India downed any Pakistani aircraft during the May 7-10 fighting between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond for a request for comment on Saturday.
Pakistan has claimed that it shot down six Indian aircraft during the clashes, including a French-made Rafale fighter. India has acknowledged some losses but denied losing six aircraft.
France's air chief, General Jerome Bellanger, has previously said that he has seen evidence of the loss of three Indian fighters, including a Rafale. The Indian Air Force has not commented on the claims. REUTERS

Ukrainian drone attacks kill three, target Moscow, Russia says

Two people died and two were hospitalised following an attack before midnight on Sunday on the Tula region that borders the Moscow region to its north, Tula Governor Dmitry Milyaev said on the Telegram messaging app. One person was killed and two others were hospitalised following a Ukrainian attack targeting an industrial zone in the Nizhny Novgorod region in western Russia, Gleb Nikitin, the governor of the region, said on the Telegram. A Ukrainian security official told Reuters that Ukraine had targeted a Russian plant producing missile components in the Nizhny Novgorod region in the drone attack. At least four drones struck the Arzamas Instrument-Making Plant, which produces control systems and other components for Russia's Kh-32 and Kh-101 missiles, the official said. Russian air defence units destroyed a total of 59 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 12 over the Tula region, the Russian Defence Ministry said. The ministry only reports how many drones its units shoot down, not how many Ukraine launches. Seven drones were downed en route to Russia's capital overnight and on Monday morning, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. India estimates about 55% of goods exported to US will face Trump tariff

[MUMBAI] About 55 per cent of India's merchandise exports to the United States will be subject to the tariff imposed by President Donald Trump's administration, the Indian government said on Monday (Aug 11). Last week, Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods as punishment for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil. That raised the total duty on Indian exports to the US to 50 per cent – among the highest on any American trading partner. The Indian government had taken into account the 25 per cent tariff that Trump initially imposed on goods while providing Monday's estimate, Pankaj Chaudhary, India's junior finance minister, said in a written response to a question from a lawmaker. 'The Department of Commerce is engaged with all stakeholders including exporters and industry for taking feedback of their assessment of the situation,' Chaudhary added. Goods trade between the United States and India – the world's biggest and fifth-largest economies respectively – was worth about US$87 billion in the last fiscal year, according to Indian government estimates. Rahul Gandhi among opposition leaders detained during protest against India election panel

NEW DELHI – Dozens of Indian opposition leaders were detained in New Delhi on Aug 11 as they shouted slogans, jumped barricades and marched to the Election Commission in a rare public protest against what they say are electoral malpractices. The credibility of elections has rarely been questioned in recent decades in the world's most populous democracy. Some analysts say the opposition accusations could damage Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he navigates one of the toughest periods of his 11 years in office. Around 300 opposition leaders, including Mr Rahul Gandhi of the main opposition Congress party, marched from parliament to the office of the independent election panel but were stopped by police some distance away. The protesters shouted slogans against the panel and Mr Modi's government, saying elections were being 'stolen', and tried to push past barricades before being detained and taken away in buses. 'This fight is not political. This fight is to save the constitution,' Mr Gandhi told reporters. 'We want a clean, pure voters' list.' Mr Gandhi and Congress have alleged that voters' lists in states where the party lost are corrupted, with voters' names deleted or included more than once to rig elections in favour of Mr Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. Opposition parties have also criticised the election panel's decision to revise the voters' list in the key northern state of Bihar just before state elections due later in 2025, saying it aims to disenfranchise large numbers of poor voters. 'State of bankruptcy' The commission has said that changes in voters' lists are shared with political parties and all complaints are investigated thoroughly. It has also said that voters' lists need to be revised to remove dead voters or those who have relocated to other parts of the country, among others. Congress and its allies have fared poorly in two state elections that they had expected to win after an impressive show in the 2024 parliamentary vote, which saw BJP losing its outright majority and remaining in power only with the help of regional parties. Congress has also complained about electronic voting machines and said the counting process is not fair, charges rejected by the election panel. The BJP said opposition parties were trying to create a 'state of anarchy' by sowing seeds of doubt about the electoral process. 'They are in a state of bankruptcy because of their continuous losses,' federal minister Dharmendra Pradhan told reporters on Aug 11. REUTERS
