Tennessee town approves deals to turn closed prison into immigration detention facility

MASON, Tenn. — Officials in a rural Tennessee town voted Tuesday to approve agreements to turn a former prison into an immigration detention facility operated by a private company, despite loud objections from upset residents and activists during a contentious public meeting. The five-member Board of Aldermen in Mason, plus Mayor Eddie Noeman and Vice Mayor Reynaldo Givhan, met in a fire station garage to discuss converting the closed West Tennessee Detention Facility into a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center run by CoreCivic Inc. Also present were a few dozen vocal, angry members of the public who oppose allowing ICE to house immigrants in Mason who have been taken into custody as President Donald Trump pushes for mass deportations. Trump has touted a Florida detention facility where allegations of mistreatment of detainees have drawn lawsuits from civil rights advocates and environmental groups. The first vote of the meeting resulted in approval for a contract with CoreCivic to resume operating the facility, which was closed in 2021 after President Joe Biden ordered the Department of Justice to stop renewing contracts with private detention facilities. Trump reversed that order in January. The second vote, to approve an agreement with ICE, also passed. It is not immediately known when the facility will reopen. Mayor points to job-generating potential Noeman said he wanted to reopen the shuttered prison to bring jobs and economic development to the town, which has struggled with financial problems and needs infrastructure improvements. With a population of about 1,300, Mason is located about 40 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of Memphis. When it was open, the prison was the town's largest employer and an important economic engine. Noeman, an Egyptian-American immigrant and a longtime business owner in the town, called turning the closed prison over to CoreCivic and ICE a "win-win situation," which led to a cascade of loud boos. "It's nothing personal about any immigrant," Noeman said, adding moments later that "to give jobs to the people is what I'm looking for." At times, Noeman argued with attendees, questioning whether they actually live in Mason and telling them "you don't know what you're talking about."

File Photo by Tannen Maury/UPI | License Photo Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The GE Appliances company announced Wednesday that it plans to invest billions of dollars into its American operations and create more than 1,000 jobs. "We are defining the future of manufacturing at GE Appliances by investing in our plants, people, and communities," said GE Appliances President and CEO Kevin Nolan in a press release. "No other appliance company over the last decade has invested more in U.S. manufacturing than we have," Nolan claimed. "Our $3 billion, five-year plan shows that our commitment to U.S. manufacturing will continue into the future." The company said in the release that the first round of investments will take place at plants located in five different Southern states. According to the announcement, its top-freezer refrigerator plant in Decatur, Ala., will add new models and ramp up production before August ends, while its LaFayette, Ga., plant will begin to produce gas ranges in addition to its usual electric item production. The gas ranges were previously produced in Mexico. GE Appliances will also double the output of its gas water heater plant in Camden, S.C., with the addition of new types of water heaters to be manufactured there, and in December, its Selmer, Tenn. facility will add two new models to its manufacturing lineup. Additionally, the company's global headquarters and plant in Louisville, Ky. will receive an investment of $490 million and create 800 new jobs as it begins production of combination washer/ dryers and front-load washers. "Thanks [GE Appliances], for being a vital part of our city's past and future," Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg posted to X Wednesday. During a livestreamed meeting at the company's Louisville, Kentucky headquarters on Wednesday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said that "As one of the most prominent employers and manufacturing leaders, GE Appliances has helped establish Kentucky as America's destination for advanced manufacturing and job creation." "GE Appliances is Kentucky," he added. "And today, this long-standing team Kentucky partner is building on its commitment to our commonwealth with the largest economic sector investment in the past five years."

GE Appliances said Wednesday that it will move production of refrigerators, gas ranges, and water heaters to U.S. plants from locations in foreign countries, including Mexico and China, as part of a $3 billion expansion of its American manufacturing network. The Louisville-based company, owned by China's Haier Group, said in an Aug. 13 statement and a press conference that the move will add more than 1,000 jobs across five Southern states, modernize its 11 U.S. plants with new automation, and expand output across all product lines. The plan follows earlier commitments to bring clothes-washer production from China to its Kentucky headquarters.
