Defiant Michael van Gerwen fires back at lazy jibes as darts superstar lifts the lid on his struggles
The Dutchman endured a rough start to 2025 and is in danger of missing out on the Premier League play-offs
Defiant Michael van Gerwen has fired back at lazy jibes as he opened up on his struggles for form and deep desire to hit future targets.
The Dutch star has endured a rough start to 2025 and is in danger of missing out on the Premier League play-offs having also shown inconsistent form in other events.
As Luke Littler and Luke Humphries mop up major darts titles, Van Gerwen is swimming against a powerful tide, but refutes suggestions he's not doing the required graft. The Green Machine's big pal and best man at his wedding Vincent ver der Voort has been harsh in his recent criticism saying the three-times world champion needs to take less holidays and get down to more work.
But van Gerwen responded to any notion he's got sloppy and said: 'I've been working and practising a lot. Of course, it doesn't always pay out, but I'm doing the work, what you have to do and what you want to put in and, of course, at some point it will pay out. I know that.
'Sometimes when you're too busy, people don't know my schedule. Maybe only Phil Taylor, maybe Luke Littler now, but no-one else my schedule in the last 13, 14, 15 years, so it's difficult for them to judge about it. They've never been in that position. I have to just answer with performances and it's the only thing I can do.
'I've been in tough positions before as well, I had some other tough patches in my life, but you always survive. I know what I'm capable of. Believe in your own ability and then the rest will come automatically. You're going to have tough patches, but as long as you keep believing that everything is possible and that's what I keep grab of and hold of, to make sure that's going to happen.
'It's like a big rollercoaster at the moment and things don't always go my way. Too many games, I have to battle too much and then you make it hard for yourself. I shouldn't put myself in that position, but sometimes that's the way how things go.
'I'm a human being as well and I know I'm capable of it, and then when you don't show it, you get frustrated, you get annoyed, and you want to do better, but don't worry. I'm still going, and I still love what I do. You also need to look to reality. When you play poorly, you play poorly. You can have a big mouth, but you have to show it on the dartboard and that's the only thing I can do at the moment.'
Speaking to Online Darts, van Gerwen continued: 'Of course, I say, when I'm on top of my game, I know I can beat anyone, probably be the best player in the world, but I don't show it enough at the moment and that's a question I have to answer myself to solve it and to make sure I'm going to turn it.
'When you're facing the past, your back [is] against the future and I want to face the future. I'm getting older. I've been in the game for a long time. I've played darts for more than 25 years now and sometimes it gets a bit harder. Then you need to try to invest more time into yourself. But I'm willing to do that and I feel good. I feel comfortable and I think there's more in the tank.
'I'll never look to someone else because you can keep looking, but it's not going to change anything. You have to change yourself and that's the only answer you can get. As long as I keep enjoying the game, from there on, anything is possible.'
Van Gerwen is missing next month's World Cup for a holiday, but stated: 'My ranking, I need to make sure I maintain it or do better and, of course, do better is my main priority. The World Cup is a nice tournament to win. But it's not ranked. I can't really gain anything and I need some time off with my family as well, so in that period, I go a nice week away with my wife. I think it's a good reason.'

Tottenham 'axe three of Ange Postecoglou's backroom staff' as they step up search for his successor
Three members of Ange Postecoglou 's backroom staff are set to follow him out of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer. Spurs confirmed on Friday afternoon that Postecoglou would not be returning for a third season, with the 59-year-old sacked just 16 days after overseeing a famous victory against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final. That win ended Tottenham's 17-year wait for a major trophy and secured a place in the next edition of the Champions League. But it was not enough to save Postecoglou, who also oversaw a 17th place finish in the Premier League — the club's lowest ever. Postecoglou's departure was communicated by the club via a 368-word statement. That statement did not mention whether or not any other staff members were also leaving. But according to The Telegraph, Spurs chiefs have decided to axe Postecoglou's assistant coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo. Meanwhile, Ryan Mason — who also worked as an assistant coach under Postecoglou — left Spurs earlier in the week to take the vacant manager's job at West Bromwich Albion. Senior coach Matt Wells and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch are said to have remained with Spurs for now, although that could change after Postecoglou's replacement is announced. That replacement is likely to be current Brentford boss Thomas Frank but he is not the only man in the frame. Brentford do not want to lose Frank and will demand significant compensation, believed to be in the region of £10million, if he leaves for Spurs. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is expected to step up his search for a new manager in the coming days, with Marco Silva and Scott Parker also in the frame.

Jadon Sancho's stance on playing for Man Utd again after Chelsea's £5m decision
Jadon Sancho is facing an uncertain future in the summer transfer window after Chelsea's decision not to sign him permanently forced Manchester United to confront their previous mistakes Manchester United have been handed a serious problem after Chelsea refused to sign Jadon Sancho permanently, because he has no intention of ever playing for the club again. Sancho had appeared set to join the Blues permanently after spending the season on loan in west London, only for negotiations to break down. Chelsea ultimately decided they would rather pay United a £5million fee than go through with signing the winger for £25m. Sancho is paid around £300,000 per week by United and he and Chelsea had been unable to find a compromise on his wages, forcing a rethink for all parties. United are desperate to sell off their unwanted players in the summer transfer window, in order to help fund a rebuild under Ruben Amorim. Sancho had appeared to be the most straightforward deal, with Chelsea lumbered with an obligation to buy the 25-year-old, only for the move to break down. He has now joined the list of other unwanted players United must find buyers for, which also includes fellow loanees Marcus Rashford and Antony, and wantaway winger Alejandro Garnacho. Keeping Sancho for the 2025/26 campaign under Amorim is not a viable option, with ESPN reporting that he has no intention of pulling the United shirt on again. His stance matches that of Amorim, who doesn't want him in his squad when the next season begins. Sancho returned five goals and 10 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, helping them win the Conference League – a solid if unspectacular effort which won't help their efforts to sell him. The report states that there is tentative interest from West Ham, although Sancho's wages will be problematic. He has another year left on his contract with United, who are reluctant to buy out the winger in order to grease the wheels of his exit. Sancho has been a flop of significant proportions since signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73m. He has just 12 goals and six assists in 83 games for United over four years and has not come close to matching the potential shown at Dortmund. HAVE YOUR SAY! What does the future hold for Jadon Sancho? Comment below. He was absolutely electric in Germany, where he managed 40 goals and 47 assists in 118 appearances for Dortmund, but has struggled to replicate that form in England. A potential move back to the Bundesliga was potentially on the cards with Bayer Leverkusen, until the club hired Erik ten Hag as manager to shut that door. Ten Hag fell out with Sancho over his apparent lack of effort in training at Carrington and it was the Dutchman who prompted his loan move back to Dortmund in January 2024. Thomas Frank responds to Tottenham approach after Ange Postecoglou sacking
Brentford manager Thomas Frank is interested in replacing Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham, according to reports. Spurs finally confirmed Postecoglou's sacking on Friday evening in a statement which claimed that they could not keep the 59-year-old in place because of the 'emotions' of winning the Europa League. Postecoglou guided Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years last month with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao. However, Postecoglou ultimately lost his job due to his side's woeful Premier League campaign in which they finished 17th in the table with 22 defeats. Tottenham are now in talks to secure Postecoglou's replacement ahead of their pre-season campaign and an approach has been made to Frank. According to The Telegraph, Frank is interested in becoming Tottenham's next manager and the Brentford boss is regarded as 'the leading candidate'. The report adds that Frank still has a positive relationship with Spurs' sporting director, Johan Lange, following their time together at Danish side Lyngby. Postecoglou, who earned a £2 million bonus for winning the Europa League and was given a £4m compensation package by Tottenham, is also said to have received immediate interest from clubs following his dismissal. Elsewhere, Portuguese newspaper Record reported on Friday night that Fulham manager, Marco Silva, is 'very close' to reaching an agreement with Spurs. 'When I reflect on my time as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride. 'The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. 'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. 'We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. 'I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. 'And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected.' Tottenham, meanwhile, described the call to sack Postecoglou as 'one of the toughest decisions we have had to make'. 'We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw,' Tottenham's statement read. 'However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. More Trending 'At times there were extenuating circumstances – injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. 'This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision. 'We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future – he will always be welcome back at our home.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
