I thought Michael Flatley was eager RTE wardrobe staffer – he'd put on my jacket & dust me down, admits Eurovision icon
Episode eight of the Irish Sun podcast Fields of Dreams takes a look at the poppy 1990s, when Ireland became a Eurovision sensation, our teeny bopper bands took over the UK singles charts and the Good Friday Agreement saw Stormont become a concert venue EURO CONQUERORS I thought Michael Flatley was eager RTE wardrobe staffer – he'd put on my jacket & dust me down, admits Eurovision icon IRELAND Eurovision hero Paul Harrington thought Michael Flatley was a motivational American working for RTE wardrobe shortly before he took off as a global sensation. With Riverdance being kept under wraps ahead of its 1994 song contest interval slot, that year's winner was oblivious to the strange lad who would turn up in his dressing room and wish him well. I didn't know him. I thought he worked in wardrobe for RTE. 'He wasn't in the green or blue blouse, whatever colour it was. 'He would help me put on my jacket sometimes and dust me down. And he was kind of like, 'Go get 'em!' 'I thought, who's this American guy who works in RTE wardrobe?' Harrington has often since bumped into the multi-millionaire, who has declared an interest in running for the Presidency of Ireland, most recently outside an ATM in Dublin where he asked him 'to leave a few quid for me, if you don't mind'. Harrington struck gold alongside Charlie McGettigan with Rock 'n' Roll Kids in the 1994 event, which was staged at the Point Theatre. Advertisement It was the third win in a row for Ireland, but Harrington almost said no when asked to perform. And when he did win, it marked the beginning of a wild period in his life where former showband manager Taoiseach Albert Reynolds helped get the duo around Europe without a passport. Michael Flatley and Matt Molloy perform on Late Late Show Harrington said: 'I remember being one minute in the Taoiseach's office being given bog oak — Michael Flatley and Jean Butter were there. They were receiving bog oak also and we were getting dishes. Brendan (Graham, who wrote the winning song) coming in the door and saying, 'Listen, lads, I have you on this TV show in Belgium and it's on at six o'clock, you know. 'This is 12 o'clock in the day or something like that. And Brendan says, 'I have a flight booked for you at one o'clock.' Advertisement 'So we look at each other Albert Reynolds very casually said, 'No, don't worry. Take my driver. We'll get you there. 'Anyway, they flew us out. I mean, blue light sirens. And it a funny, funny moment. 'IT WAS MADNESS' 'Two boys are still trying to put on our seatbelt somewhere in Swords — it was madness. 'So we made the flight and off we went. We landed in I think it was Belgium at the time and stayed over, booked into a hotel. We had nothing. Advertisement 'We didn't have a toothbrush. We actually had no passport. And Albert, one of his aides, smoothed things over, which is great. 'A bit trickier getting back, but we had to call and say, 'Listen, don't forget we have to come back, you know. 'IT WAS AN ADVENTURE' 'Somebody said, no, you're not going back. You're going to the BBC. You're going to Gloria Hunniford. You're doing the afternoon show. 'And that was madness. We were literally in the clothes we were standing in, in the Taoiseach's office. But it was an adventure.' The band included twins Edele and Keavy Lynch, who were a bit surprised when their brother Shane hit it big with Boyzone despite being more interested in cars. In those days, they kept you a secret. B*Witched's Sinead O'Carroll B*Witched worked their way up from nothing — but when the music video came out and Ireland was not ready for it, they were all mortified. Singer Sinead O'Carroll said: 'In those days, they kept you a secret. And because we were doing so much in the UK, nobody in Ireland really knew what we were doing. Advertisement 'Even some of our close friends when C'est La Vie came out were like, 'Oh, my God'. You're either going to love it or hate it. 'The irony was that Edele and Keavy were hip hop dancers, and Edele thought she was going to be like in a band like TLC. And I just remember getting the video treatment back from C'est La Vie and we nearly died. We were like, oh my God, we actually look like Teletubbies. What is going on? 'WE'RE POP HOP' 'Then we realised we're pop hop. We're pop with cheese on top of it. But anyway, it worked.' The Good Friday Agreement brought peace to Northern Ireland in 1998. She says, 'It's happening.' She rang Elton John, then asked us to get involved. 'Elton said, 'I'll do it, but you've got to get somebody who knows what they're doing.' ‘She always needs attention', jokes Ireland AM host as he throws dig at co-host Muireann O'Connell live on air
IRELAND AM host Alan Hughes has joked that his co-host Muireann O'Connell "always needs attention" in a new clip. The popular presenter was back on air this morning alongside Muireann, and Ray Foley, who was filling in for Tommy Bowe. 3 Muireann O'Connell shared a video on the Virgin Media set 3 Muireann told fans that 'Alan doesn't talk to them' 3 Alan jokingly remarked that Muireann 'always needed attention' The chat show hosts are renowned for their friendly banter both on and off screen, and today was no different. Taking to Instagram, Muireann shared a video of herself Alan, and Ray in the Virgin Media studios during an ad break. The 41-year-old excitedly remarked: "There's the three of us now." However, as she zoomed in on Ray and Alan they looked less than pleased to be on camera. The Limerick lady then called Alan out, but he continued to stare at his iPad on the desk. Ray tapped Alan on the shoulder and said: "Alan look", to which he turned his head and responded "what?" Muireann hilariously added: "Oh it doesn't matter he doesn't talk to any of us." Alan smiled and waved at Muireann's camera and said: "She needs attention all the time oh my God. "Everybody just loves you Muireann." Ray then cut across and added: "Yes everyone loves you click on her socials guys." Muireann O'Connell slams Alan Hughes' strange food quirk Muireann sighed and replied: "Okay well this is not going up." This comes after Alan left his co-host Siomha Ní Ruairc in stitches after a food tasting moment took a hilarious turn. On a recent cooking segment, chef Caryna Camerino joined the hosts in the studio to whip up a batch of fresh cinnamon buns. FUN TIMES Once they were ready, Alan and Siomha gave them a try - but the pair quickly burst out laughing as Alan made a cheeky remark about the noises they were making while eating. As they tried the pastries, Siomha said: "I'm going to need a minute here." Alan then added: "Yeah there's a lot of noise here. It's like when they kiss on Love Island and I hate it." The presenters couldn't contain their laughter as they made "mmm" noises into their microphones, with Alan dragging out the sound for effect. Alan added: "If you want to watch back on the 'mmm' you can sign up to Virgin Media Play or scan the QR code on the screen to enter online."

Slane Castle hopes as HUGE Irish band top of boss' wishlist after iconic double header gigs & ‘what we're known for' vow
And the new album in the works opens the band up to a return to the road on their 50th anniversary next year COMEBACK BID Slane Castle hopes as HUGE Irish band top of boss' wishlist after iconic double header gigs & 'what we're known for' vow SLANE chief Alex Conyngham wants U2 to return to headline a spectacular Castle gig, the Irish Sun can reveal. The son of the late Lord Henry Mountcharles has been working hard to secure a 2026 event, so far keeping the identity of the headliner a secret. Advertisement 4 U2 could soon return to headline with a spectacular gig next year Credit: Chris Doyle 4 It's been a decade since U2 released an album - but a new one is currently in the works Credit: Free for editorial use 4 Bono said the band can create a soundtrack for 'people who want to take on the world' Credit: Splash But he has revealed that U2 tops his wishlist. Next year is the 25th anniversary of the Beautiful Day rockers' stunning double header by the Boyne and 46 years after they played at the very first Co Meath event. Alex told the Irish Sun: 'Slane will always be important to U2. And U2 will always be important to Slane. 'It's a deep running relationship going all the way back to that first show in '81. And I'd love to find a way to rekindle that relationship if we could.' Advertisement Alex last week revealed his efforts to bring Slane back in 2026, declining to reveal which act he was in negotiations with. He said: 'We are hoping, nothing I can confirm, but what I can confirm is our desire to do it. 'We absolutely want to bring the shows back. We miss them. It's not just about the revenue, it's the buzz of doing them and it's kind of keeping Slane on the map. It's what we're known for and I don't want that legacy to fade away.' But in an exclusive chat with the Irish Sun for the Fields of Dreams podcast, he identified the veteran Irish rockers as a top pick. Advertisement They played an unprecedented double header a week apart in Slane in 2001, 20 years on from their set supporting Thin Lizzy at the first ever festival there. Decades later, Alex was with Bono when the U2 frontman was in the crowd to watch his son Elijah perform with Inhaler in 2023. U2 release special album He told us: 'Bono was here at the Harry Styles gig because Inhaler were playing and that was very funny. He was sitting out there having his tinny watching his son doing what he had done over 40 years ago. Which he said was a pretty weird emotional experience. So yeah we had a fun chat that day.' It's now a decade since U2, who most recently performed 40 shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas, released an album. Advertisement NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS But there is a new one in the works, which opens the band up to a return to the road on their 50th anniversary. Bono said: 'Everyone in the band seems desperate for it. It's like their lives depend on it. ... And, as I tell them, they do.' The new album will see Bono, Larry Mullen, Edge and Adam Clayton reunited with Joshua Tree producer Brian Eno. On a tour, Bono told Esquire: 'I just like to play live. You want to have some very good reasons to leave home.' Advertisement The band which formed in 1976 will be a half century old next year, with few acts capable of retaining an enormous fan base over five decades. Bono told the magazine of the fans: 'I hope they're going to still be there for us. We've pushed them to their elastic limit over the years. 'And now it's a long time that we've been away. But I still think that we can create a soundtrack for people who want to take on the world.' Slane has hosted the biggest names in music since its first inception in 1981, including Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Oasis, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones. Advertisement BACK ON TRACK There was a four year gap between Metallica in 2019 and Styles in 2023, and the new Castle chief is working hard to make sure the hiatus is shorter this time. He told us: 'It became the big one on the on the calendar. And right now I'm determined to make sure that that comes back and reclaim that place. 'Harry Styles was a great gig because for some for quite a lot of the audience it was their first live music experience. And that was really uplifting because if you can give someone a great first gig you know then they'll continue going to other gigs for the rest of their lives. 'And everybody should enjoy live music you know. And it's wonderful to think someone had their first good experience here like many people did back in the '80s. Advertisement 'There's something in the offing, we can't say who that is. The deals aren't done yet but we're just really hopeful we can come back in 2026. 'I'm not going to say. We're just trying to get the gigs back.'
