13 Ways We Betray Ourselves To Keep The Marriage Alive
Keeping a marriage alive can sometimes feel like a balancing act, but when you start losing yourself in the process, it's time to take a step back. It's important to remember that compromising doesn't mean sacrificing your core values or identity. Sometimes, in an effort to maintain peace, you might find yourself giving up too much of what makes you, you. Here are 13 ways you might be betraying yourself in your marriage without even realizing it. 1. Ignoring Your Own Needs You might think putting your partner's needs first is noble, but it can lead to neglecting your own well-being. Over time, you may find yourself feeling drained and unfulfilled because your personal needs are not being met. According to Dr. Harriet Lerner, a clinical psychologist and author of "The Dance of Anger," self-neglect can lead to resentment in relationships. It's crucial to communicate your needs and ensure you're not losing yourself while trying to fulfill someone else's expectations. Remember, self-care is not selfish; it's necessary for maintaining a healthy relationship. You might feel guilty about asking for time alone or pursuing personal interests. However, these activities are essential for maintaining a sense of self and preventing burnout. It's important to set boundaries that allow you to recharge and stay connected with what you love. When you take care of yourself, you're better equipped to support your partner and contribute positively to the relationship. Ensure that you're not consistently putting your needs on the back burner for the sake of the marriage. 2. Changing Your Personality Do you ever feel like you're playing a role in your own marriage? It's easy to fall into the trap of altering your personality to match your partner's preferences. While it's natural to adapt to some extent, losing your authentic self can lead to long-term dissatisfaction. You might start saying things that don't align with your true beliefs or acting in ways that feel unnatural. Over time, this can create an internal conflict that's hard to ignore. Being true to who you are is a cornerstone of any healthy relationship. Your partner fell in love with you for a reason, and compromising your individuality can undermine that initial attraction. It's better to have open discussions about your differences rather than pretending they don't exist. You'll likely find that embracing each other's uniqueness can strengthen your bond. Authenticity fosters a deeper connection and paves the way for genuine intimacy. 3. Sacrificing Your Career Goals If you find yourself constantly compromising on your career goals for the sake of your marriage, it's time to reassess. While supporting each other's ambitions is important, it shouldn't come at the expense of your own dreams. A study by Dr. Sheryl Sandberg highlights that partnerships where both individuals pursue their career goals tend to have higher satisfaction levels. It's crucial to have open conversations about how both of you can thrive professionally without compromising personal aspirations. Finding a balance where both partners feel supported is key to long-term happiness. You might assume that sacrificing your job aspirations is necessary to maintain marital harmony. However, losing sight of your career goals can lead to resentment and dissatisfaction. By working together to find solutions, like dividing responsibilities or considering flexible work arrangements, you can support each other's careers. It's important to communicate openly about your aspirations and explore ways to achieve them without negatively impacting the relationship. Mutual respect for each other's professional dreams fosters a supportive and fulfilling marriage. 4. Suppressing Your Emotions In an effort to avoid conflict, you might find yourself pushing your feelings aside. It's easy to think that holding back emotions will keep the peace, but this can lead to emotional disconnection. Suppressing your feelings doesn't make them disappear; they tend to build up and eventually surface in unhealthy ways. A marriage where one partner feels they can't express themselves openly is on shaky ground. It's essential to create a safe space where both partners feel heard and understood. Expressing emotions is a vital component of a healthy relationship. When you communicate your feelings honestly, it encourages your partner to do the same, fostering mutual understanding. It's okay to have disagreements, as long as they're approached with respect and empathy. Bottling up emotions can lead to resentment and alienation. Prioritize open communication to maintain a genuine connection with your partner. 5. Abandoning Your Social Circle When you get caught up in the whirlwind of marriage, it's easy to drift away from your friends. While it's natural for some relationships to change, completely abandoning your social circle can leave you feeling isolated. According to a study by Dr. John Gottman, maintaining friendships outside of marriage contributes to overall relationship satisfaction. Your friends offer support, perspective, and a sense of belonging that's distinct from your marital relationship. Ensuring that you continue to nurture these connections is crucial for your mental and emotional well-being. It might feel like spending time with friends takes away from your relationship, but it actually enhances it. Having a strong social support network allows you to bring fresh energy and perspectives back into your marriage. It also provides a healthy outlet for discussing issues that you might not want to burden your partner with. Encourage each other to maintain friendships and engage in social activities. Valuing your social life strengthens your sense of self and contributes to a healthier marriage. 6. Letting Go Of Your Passions Have you noticed that your hobbies and interests are collecting dust since you got married? Giving up your passions can lead to a loss of identity and fulfillment. It's easy to let go of personal interests when you're focused on building a life together, but it's crucial to maintain a sense of individuality. Your passions are a part of what makes you unique and contribute to your overall happiness. When you engage in activities you love, you bring positive energy into your relationship. Sharing your passions with your partner can also be a great way to bond. It opens up opportunities for shared experiences and conversations that can deepen your connection. However, it's important to have activities that are just for you, too. These pursuits keep you grounded and provide a sense of accomplishment outside of your marriage. Nurturing your passions ensures that you don't lose sight of yourself in the relationship. 7. Accepting Unfair Compromises Compromise is essential in any relationship, but there's a line between compromise and unfair sacrifice. If you find yourself consistently accepting terms that leave you feeling shortchanged, it's time to speak up. Research by Dr. Gottman highlights that healthy relationships are built on mutual respect and equality. It's important to ensure that compromises are balanced and that both partners feel heard and valued. Navigating compromises together can strengthen your bond and foster a sense of teamwork. You might think that giving in is a way to avoid arguments, but this can lead to resentment over time. If one partner always gets their way, it creates an imbalance that can undermine the relationship's foundation. Open discussions about what each person is willing to compromise on can prevent feelings of resentment. It's vital to ensure that both partners contribute to decision-making and feel equally valued. A relationship where both parties feel respected and heard is more likely to thrive. 8. Avoiding Difficult Conversations Nobody loves having tough talks, but avoiding them only adds to the problems. Over time, unresolved issues can become a source of tension and misunderstanding. By skirting around difficult topics, you're denying both yourself and your partner the opportunity to grow and evolve. Open and honest communication is the cornerstone of a thriving marriage. Avoidance might seem like the easier option, but it often leads to more complex issues down the line. Take the initiative to address problems head-on, even if it feels uncomfortable. When you create an environment where both partners feel safe to express their concerns, it fosters mutual respect and trust. Set aside time to discuss challenging topics without distractions, focusing on finding solutions collaboratively. Remember that it's not about winning an argument but about understanding each other's perspectives. Approaching difficult conversations with empathy and patience can lead to positive outcomes and strengthen your relationship. 9. Overlooking Signs Of Disrespect Respect is a fundamental pillar in any relationship, and overlooking signs of disrespect can be damaging. If you notice a pattern of dismissive or belittling behavior, it's important to address it promptly. Allowing disrespectful behavior to go unchecked can erode the foundation of your marriage. Speak up about how these actions make you feel and set clear boundaries. It's crucial for both partners to feel valued and respected in order to maintain a healthy dynamic. Don't brush off disrespect as a minor issue, as it can lead to more significant problems over time. Recognizing and addressing disrespectful behavior is an important step in fostering a respectful and supportive relationship. When both partners commit to treating each other with kindness and understanding, it strengthens the bond and promotes equality. Discuss your expectations for how you want to be treated and ensure that your partner does the same. A relationship rooted in mutual respect is more likely to stand the test of time. 10. Neglecting Personal Growth Marriage shouldn't mean putting personal growth on hold. Continuing to evolve individually is essential for both your happiness and the health of your relationship. When you stop investing in your personal development, it can lead to stagnation and dissatisfaction. Encourage each other to pursue learning opportunities, whether it's picking up a new skill or exploring different hobbies. By supporting each other's growth, you create a dynamic and thriving relationship. Personal growth also adds depth to your relationship by bringing in new perspectives and experiences. It's important to have goals and aspirations outside of your marriage that challenge and inspire you. When you're both engaged in personal development, it creates a positive environment that fosters growth together. Celebrate each other's achievements and encourage each other to push beyond comfort zones. A relationship where both partners prioritize personal growth is more likely to be fulfilling and enduring. 11. Overemphasizing Your Partner's Happiness While it's natural to want your partner to be happy, overemphasizing their happiness at the expense of your own can be detrimental. When you constantly prioritize their needs and feelings above your own, it creates an imbalance. It's important to recognize that both partners are responsible for their own happiness. Encouraging each other to pursue individual joy benefits both of you in the long run. Ensuring that both partners have space to be themselves is essential for a balanced and harmonious relationship. Remember that a happy marriage involves two content individuals, not one person sacrificing their happiness for the other. It's important to have open conversations about what happiness looks like for each of you. When both partners take ownership of their happiness, it relieves pressure on the relationship and allows for mutual support. Encourage each other to pursue activities and interests that bring joy and fulfillment. A relationship where both partners focus on their happiness is more likely to thrive. 12. Ignoring Relationship Red Flags Every relationship has its ups and downs, but consistently ignoring red flags can lead to serious issues. It might feel easier to overlook these warning signs, but doing so only prolongs problems. Pay attention to patterns of behavior that make you uncomfortable or unhappy. Addressing these issues early on can prevent them from escalating into larger problems. It's crucial to have honest discussions about what is and isn't acceptable in your relationship. Ignoring red flags can lead to a cycle of unresolved issues that undermine the relationship's foundation. It's important to trust your instincts and address concerns as they arise. Create a safe space to talk about any issues without fear of judgment or retaliation. When both partners are open to discussing uncomfortable truths, it fosters a culture of transparency and trust. Navigating red flags with honesty can lead to a healthier and more resilient relationship. 13. Losing Your Sense Of Humor Marriage should be a source of joy and laughter, but stress and routine can sometimes overshadow this. Losing your sense of humor can lead to a dull, monotonous relationship. Finding ways to inject fun and laughter into your everyday life can reignite the spark. It's important to share moments of joy and lighten the mood when things get too serious. Humor can be a powerful tool for connection and stress relief in a marriage. Make time to enjoy each other's company and find activities that make you both laugh. When you share laughter, it creates positive memories and strengthens your bond. Don't take yourselves too seriously; embrace the silly moments and appreciate the quirks that make your relationship unique. A lighthearted approach can ease tension and remind you why you fell in love in the first place. Prioritizing humor ensures that your marriage remains vibrant and enjoyable. "Trending Butter Yellow Paint: Welcoming Choice For Home Exteriors"
Can a paint color make you happier? Can it enhance your home? Real estate, interior design, and building pros all say yes! According to review and resource platform Yelp's August 2025 Trend Tracker showing a 245% increase in searches — the highest of any in the past five years — the 'it' color right now is butter yellow. Here's how it's showing up on home fronts, maybe on a street near you. Why Butter Yellow? 'People are looking for colors for their home that are more inviting than ever! Warm and creamy, a buttery yellow is the perfect solution to that pursuit!' declares color expert Amy Wax. 'If there was a color that signifies a single mood or vibe it is yellow that communicates happiness!' She points out that it's a very natural shade that complements nature without overwhelming it. Wax sees butter yellow as part of a larger phenomenon: 'I find sweet colors are trending for exteriors, colors that are soothing, charming, and truly inviting! Soft greens, delicate blues and creamy yellows are certainly taking center stage when it comes to requests for exterior colors. When I create a color palette for a home those colors have to reflect the homeowners personal style and taste, that being said I am seeing more requests for color and people letting go of the whites, grays and neutral colors of the last few seasons.' Yelp's trend expert Tara Lewis agrees: 'Right now, there's a bigger shift happening, with homeowners moving away from all the grays and beiges and leaning into maximalism and dopamine decor. Butter yellow fits right in, working as a warm neutral while still feeling bright and whimsical.' Many of the pros interviewed for this article describe butter yellow in the same upbeat terms. Forrest Webber, founder of The Trade Table, an online home improvement store, shares, 'After years of gray dominating exterior palettes, homeowners are now seeking warmer, more uplifting hues. Butter yellow strikes a balance; it delivers the cheer of a bright color while maintaining the refined softness of a pastel, offering a fresh look that still feels harmonious within the neighborhood. Like his colleagues, he's also seeing it trending strongly in kitchens, breakfast nooks and laundry rooms, 'spaces where homeowners want a light, uplifting feel.' (The main areas of my own home are butter yellow.) Sherwin-Williams' color marketing manager Emily Kantz describes butter yellow this way: 'It complements a wide range of architectural styles — from coastal and colonial to mid-century modern, craftsman and farmhouse.' That plus its welcoming hue make it a favorite across the country. Hot Markets 'Butter yellow is having a moment, and it doesn't surprise me one bit,' declares Kate Hendrickson, associate broker with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Haven Properties, in San Luis Obispo. 'In my Central California market, we're seeing butter yellow showing up on charming Craftsman-style homes and coastal cottages. It gives off a sunny, optimistic vibe that buyers are loving, especially Gen Z and Millennial buyers who crave warmth, charm, and character.' Compass broker Alli Pepperling in the Raleigh area reports that 'Butter yellow is gaining significant traction in our Triangle market, and I'm seeing it make a real impact on buyer interest and sales velocity.' She sees it as having staying power too. 'Butter yellow works exceptionally well on homes with Southern charm and character,' she observes. Licensed general contractor Gary Baxter agrees. 'Butter yellow is beginning to show up in our Metro Atlanta and North Georgia market, particularly among homeowners looking to refresh older homes or new builds in communities that value a warm, welcoming curb appeal. While it's not dominating the landscape yet, we've definitely noticed an uptick in requests compared to just a couple of years ago.' He's seeing an increase in both paint and siding, he comments. Down the coast in Savannah, Casey Ricks of Baywater Custom Builders, is seeing butter yellow show up more, though it hasn't taken over. 'It's not the color we see most often for exteriors, but when a client chooses it, it really turns heads and creates a cheerful, welcoming first impression.' Interior designer and real estate agent Kathie Chrisicos of William Raveis, Back Bay, Boston describes butter yellow as a popular and 'quiet soft shade' for New England home exteriors, particularly 'in our seaside cities and towns.' She sees it as a charm booster for historic-inspired small homes. 'In our established neighborhoods,' she adds, 'I have seen butter yellow set a quintessential New England Colonial to stand out among neighboring homes.' Niche Opportunity Mark Lumpkin, founder of STR Cribs, helps the owners of short term rentals across the country make their properties appealing to the VRBO and Airbnb travel crowds, giving him a vantage point on color and design trends in diverse markets. He's seeing butter yellow trend, especially among coastal and cottage properties, but isn't seeing one dominant reason as to why. While theorizing about its sweetness, nostalgic appeal and 'happy' factor, Lumpkin points to one tactical factor that could be decisive: 'We have found that this color looks good in photos taken during the 'golden hour' of natural light in rooms that are rented out for short periods of time,' he adds. Caution! Not all yellows are equal, cautions Wax. 'If the yellow is creamy and light, it can feel warm and inviting. If the yellow is overly saturated, it can make people feel overstimulated and irritable. For that very reason it is of utmost importance to choose the right yellow for your home, inside or out!' Real estate site Zillow agrees. Its Summer 2025 paint color analysis warns: 'Buyers would pay nearly $4,000 less for a home with a daisy yellow kitchen ($3,915 less) or living room ($3,891 less).' Butter enthusiasts beware! Not Universal Butter yellow itself is not a universal choice, and local building materials and styles explain why. Christy Walker, broker/owner of REMAX Signature in Phoenix, says stucco and tile roofing materials make natural and neutral colors dominant in her market. 'Additionally, HOA's play a big role in what colors can be used and although trends tend to come and go, they don't typically adapt their policies to allow for colors that may not conform with the cohesive look they've already established with desert colors,' she points out. In New York City, Compass broker, Cindy Chen, is seeing butter yellow more in interiors. When it comes to exteriors, Chen sees it as a great color choice for cottage and bungalow style homes. (These are not as widespread in the city as in other markets.) Conclusions 'The colors that make people feel the most at ease are soothing colors,' suggests Wax, seeing subtle blues, greens and salmon pinks in addition to butter yellow. 'It's the colors that are easier on the eyes and softer to live with, that are the most soothing colors at the end of the day!' And who couldn't use some soothing these days and nights?***Author's Note: All interviews for this article were conducted by email in the previous week.
