Avalanche plan to refocus vs. Blackhawks after blown lead
April 1 - Clinching the No. 3 seed in the Central Division and a spot in the Western Conference playoffs is well within reach for the Colorado Avalanche.
Trouble is, Colorado has struggled to distance itself from opponents lately.
The Avalanche (45-26-4, 94 points) enter Wednesday's visit to the Chicago Blackhawks on a two-game losing streak. After starting a four-game homestand with multi-goal wins against Detroit and Los Angeles, Colorado fell by one goal apiece to St. Louis and Calgary.
Monday's loss to the Flames saw the Avalanche surge to a 2-0 advantage -- only to yield goals 32 seconds apart midway through the third period and allow the only shootout tally.
"Can't have that now, especially this time of year," said Colorado forward Brock Nelson. "Closing out games and winning games, that's what it's all about. So, we know we're capable of closing out, too, with the way we can play. So, it's just about energy, focus."
Chicago (21-44-9, 51 points) toted the second-fewest points in the NHL into Tuesday, but has frustrated the Avalanche more often than not this season.
The Blackhawks rolled 5-2 Oct. 28 at Colorado and prevailed 3-1 Jan. 8 on home ice before the Avalanche regrouped for a 3-0 victory on March 10. Scott Wedgewood posted a 20-save shutout for host Colorado.
That defeat marked the second in a seven-game losing streak for the Blackhawks, which since has stretched to 10 losses in 11 games.
Chicago blitzed Philadelphia 7-4 on March 23 to begin a five-game homestand. Since then, the Blackhawks have been outscored 15-8 by New Jersey, Vegas and Utah.
"There have been times in the last couple of games where you see we're doing some really good things," said Blackhawks interim coach Anders Sorensen. "Then when we have a little hiccup, we have a hard time stopping it after that. But a lot of young guys are doing a lot of good things."
Forward Oliver Moore and defenseman Sam Rinzel skated in their NHL debuts Sunday. Rinzel was denied on separate scoring chances midway through the second period of a 5-2 loss to Utah.
"Like 'Ollie' said, as a hockey player, you want to win, so that stings," Rinzel said. "But overall it was an unbelievable first game."
Colorado held a six-point edge on Minnesota and a seven-point cushion on St. Louis before play began Tuesday. The Avalanche have seven games remaining.
Nathan MacKinnon continues to keep the Avalanche afloat. He stretched his home points streak to 25 games with an assist Monday against Calgary and has collected points in two of his last three road games. He reached 110 points with Monday's helper and is just the 12th player in league history to reach that threshold in three consecutive seasons.
"He finds a way to chip in and create offensively. ... I think that's what great players do," said Avalanche coach Jared Bednar. "They find a way to chip away, and when they get opportunities, they tend to finish them off. And he's done that consistently."

Mets use power surge to sweep Rockies again
June 8 - Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil each had two home runs and three hits, Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez also went deep, and the New York Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 13-5 in Denver on Sunday. It was Alonso's 23rd career multi-homer game, the most in New York history. He now has 243 career home runs, second to Darryl Strawberry's 252. Alvarez and Juan Soto had three hits, and Ronny Mauricio contributed a pair of singles for New York, which swept Colorado for the second time in a span of eight days. Ryan McMahon, Tyler Freeman and Jordan Beck had two hits each for the Rockies. Colorado starter Chase Dollander (2-6) allowed five runs on eight hits over three innings. Mets starter Tylor Megill (5-4) didn't allow a hit through four innings while his team built a lead. McNeil capped a 10-pitch at-bat with a home run to lead off the second inning, and Francisco Alvarez made it 2-0 with an RBI single to center. New York tacked on more in the third. Soto led off with a single, and Alonso followed the first of his two-run homers to make it 4-0. McNeil hit his second homer of the game and sixth of the season in the fourth, a three-run shot in the fourth, to extend the lead. The Rockies managed just two walks off Megill until Sam Hilliard led off the fifth with a double to right field. He scored one out later on Braxton Fulford's single, Freeman walked, and Beck drove in Fulford with a double. Megill hit Ryan Ritter to load the bases but got the next two batters to end his day. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out five. Baty's two-run shot in the seventh, his seventh homer of the season, made it an eight-run game, and Hunter Goodman had an RBI single for Colorado in the bottom of the inning. Alonso hit is 17th home run of the season in the eighth inning, Alvarez hit a solo homer in the ninth, and Beck had an RBI double in the ninth and scored on Ritter's single to complete the scoring. --Field Level Media

Ronny Mauricio, Mets vie for sweep of downtrodden Rockies
June 8 - Infielder Ronny Mauricio could be worth the wait for the New York Mets, who will aim for a sweep of their three-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday afternoon in Denver. Mauricio hit one of three homers for New York in its 8-1 win over the Rockies on Saturday. The Mets won for the seventh time in their last nine games and moved a season-high 17 games above .500. Mauricio, 24, earned a promotion from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday after missing all of last season with a torn ACL. He hit a mammoth 456-foot blast and singled in Saturday's win. "Pretty impressive," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. "I think he went on the third deck; it's the first time I've seen somebody go over there. We know the power's real, we know the impact (he can have). "But at the same time, we've got to be patient with him. This is a guy who missed a whole year of development. It's really good to see him now do some of the things that we know he's capable of. It was a great night for him, great night for the whole offense." Colorado went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position on Saturday and lost its second straight game following a three-game winning streak. The Rockies are 12-52, which ties the 1932 Boston Red Sox for the worst 64-game start in baseball's modern era (since 1901). Ryan McMahon briefly tied Saturday's game when he began the fourth inning with his seventh home run of the season and first since May 11. The homer was the 131st of his career, enabling him to pass Matt Holliday for the 11th-most in franchise history. Colorado fell to 6-24 at Coors Field, which is the worst home record in the majors and its worst start through 30 home games in franchise history. Sunday's pitching matchup will feature a pair of right-handers as the Mets' Tylor Megill (4-4, 3.77 ERA) faces the Rockies' Chase Dollander (2-5, 6.26). Megill, 29, allowed four runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Tuesday. He settled in after giving up four runs in the first inning and retired 16 of the final 17 Dodgers he faced while throwing 105 pitches in his outing. The Mets lost 6-5 in 10 innings. Orlando Arcia is 2-for-11 against Megill, who is 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA in two career starts versus Colorado. Dollander returned after missing two weeks with forearm tightness and gave up two runs over three innings against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday in a game the Rockies won 3-2. He has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his nine starts in his rookie campaign. "He's developing nicely," Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said of Dollander. "I can't say enough about Chase Dollander, the way he takes care of himself, his thought process, the way he talks about the game after it happens, and sees where he went wrong and what went right." Dollander, 23, is set to make his first career appearance against the Mets. Schaeffer made the decision to use Dollander on Sunday in place of the originally scheduled starter, Carson Palmquist, who pitched 4 2/3 innings against the Mets last Sunday. "We just played the Mets last week, and I just want them to see a couple different pitchers," Schaeffer said. New York has won its last seven meetings against the Rockies, including all five this season. --Field Level Media

Mets slug three homers in win over Rockies
June 8 - Ronny Mauricio, Jared Young and Jeff McNeil each homered and Clay Holmes tossed six strong innings as the New York Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 8-1 on Saturday night in Denver. Holmes (7-3) allowed one run on nine hits with no walks and six strikeouts for the Mets, who won for the 11th time in their last 14 games and moved a season-high 17 games above .500. Ryan McMahon homered for Colorado, which lost its second straight following a three-game winning streak. The Rockies went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base. Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor returned to the starting lineup for the first time since suffering a broken right pinky toe on Wednesday and went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases. Brandon Nimmo added two hits and two RBIs, and Luis Torrens drove in two runs. Mauricio gave the Mets a 1-0 lead with a leadoff homer in the third inning against German Marquez (2-8). The 456-foot blast was Mauricio's third career homer and first since being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. McMahon tied the game when he began the fourth inning with his seventh home run and first since May 11. New York regained the lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Young connected on Marquez's first pitch of the inning for his second homer before Mauricio singled and stole second base. Maurcio advanced to third on Lindor's groundout and scored on Nimmo's single to left field. The Mets extended their lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning on McNeil's leadoff homer. The 414-shot was McNeil's fourth homer this season. Marquez allowed four runs on eight hits over five-plus innings. He walked three and struck out three. New York scored three runs in the seventh on Tyrone Taylor's sacrifice fly and Torrens' two-run single. The Mets tacked on another run in the eighth on Nimmo's RBI double. The Rockies fell to 12-52 after forcing Holmes to work in and out of trouble in the early innings. Colorado opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles by Jordan Beck and Thairo Estrada before Holmes retired the next three batters in order. --Field Level Media
