HBCU AD being sued for $1 million over alleged SA

Miami Herald05-06-2025
HOUSTON – HBCU Texas Southern University placed a senior Vice President of intercollegiate athletics Dr. Kevin Granger on official on leave after a civil lawsuit accused him of sexual assault and harassment. A university staff member filed the suit, naming Granger as the defendant.
The plaintiff filed the lawsuit on June 2, 2025, in Harris County District Court. She claims Granger made unwanted physical contact that caused bodily injury. Attorney Tony Buzbee's law firm represents the plaintiff, who seeks over \$1 million in damages, including legal fees and interest.
The filing requests a Level 3 Discovery Control Plan under Texas law. This type of plan suggests the case involves complex matters. The plaintiff also requested a trial by jury.
Texas Southern, a leading HBCU, responded by confirming it knew about the lawsuit and emphasized its commitment to safety. In a statement to HBCU Gameday, the university said:
"Texas Southern University became aware of the allegations involving a senior member of the leadership team following the filing of civil litigation. The University takes all allegations of misconduct seriously, as the safety of our students, student-athletes, and employees is our top priority. As a standard practice, the University does not comment on pending litigation."
The university also sent a message to alumni and staff. It explained that it launched an independent investigation and placed the executive on leave to ensure a fair review. While the lawsuit does not name Texas Southern as a defendant, the university said it would uphold its policies and values throughout the process.
This situation continues to gain attention across the HBCU community. With more details of the accusations now public, many are watching how the case unfolds. HBCU Gameday will provide further updates as new information emerges.

Virginia Tech responds to accusations made by HBCU coach

Virginia Tech has responded to serious allegations from North Carolina Central head coach Trei Oliver. Oliver claims a Virginia Tech assistant coach was on the sideline of the Durham, NC HBCU last season in an attempt to recruit one of his players. In a statement released Saturday, Virginia Tech stated that it had no prior knowledge of the incident. 'This is the first time the issue has been brought to our attention, and no concern has previously been shared with us through any formal channel,' the statement read. 'Virginia Tech takes all NCAA rules seriously and is committed to conducting our program with integrity. We are reviewing the matter internally and will address any findings appropriately.' The comments came after Oliver spoke at a media event on Friday. When asked about the most outrageous moment of his coaching career, he pointed to an incident during the 2024 season. 'Virginia Tech was actually on my sideline recruiting our running back,' Oliver said. 'That was pretty bold. I couldn't believe it.' Oliver said the moment caused a stir during the game. Several of his assistant coaches tried to calm him down, suggesting the visitor was just there to watch. 'He's just down here visiting,' they told him. But Oliver wasn't buying it. 'I knew what it was,' he said. Star Running Back Transfers to UVA Oliver didn't name the player during the interview, but it appears that it was his star running back J'Mari Taylor. Taylor was a first-team all-conference performer and has since transferred to the University of Virginia. Taylor is expected to be part of the Cavaliers' running back rotation this fall. UVA is scheduled to play Virginia Tech on November 29. 'Thank God he went to UVA,' Oliver said. 'And UVA is going to beat the smoke out of them other folks.' Broader Implications Oliver's claim has sparked conversation around recruiting ethics and the treatment of HBCU programs in the modern college football landscape. The NCAA transfer portal has created new opportunities, but also new risks-especially for smaller programs trying to retain their top talent. As Virginia Tech begins its internal review, the coaching world is paying close attention. Oliver's story raises important questions about access, tampering, and respect across all levels of college football. HBCU expels fraternity following hazing death investigation

BATON ROUGE, LA - HBCU Southern University has expelled the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. following a hazing investigation tied to the death of 20-year-old student Caleb Wilson. This marks a significant disciplinary step for the HBCU, following months of scrutiny and legal fallout stemming from the February incident. The Division of Student Affairs launched the investigation in February. After holding a disciplinary hearing, officials found the Omega Psi Phi chapter responsible for violating the student code of conduct, particularly in relation to hazing. As a result, the university revoked all fraternity privileges and ordered the removal of physical markers, including monuments, benches, and the fraternity's campus plot. Police reports state that Wilson and eight other pledges went to a flooring company on February 26 for a fraternity meeting. They were told to change into gray sweatsuits. Once inside, at least three individuals - including 23-year-old Caleb McCray from Wylie, Texas - punched each pledge four times in the chest with boxing gloves. Witnesses say McCray struck Wilson four times, causing him to collapse. He became unresponsive, appeared to have a seizure, and urinated on himself. Fraternity members changed his clothing and took him to a hospital. An autopsy revealed a bruise on his chest. Authorities confirmed that Wilson's death resulted from the hazing incident. Law enforcement later charged McCray, a former Southern University student, with criminal hazing and manslaughter. His former high school football coach confirmed that McCray enrolled at the HBCU after graduating in 2019. Omega Psi Phi, a historically Black fraternity founded in 1911, has played a long-standing role in Southern University's campus culture. The Beta Sigma Chapter, specifically, was a highly visible presence for decades. That legacy came to an end with the expulsion and the covering of the fraternity's sacred plot - now draped with a tarp. As incoming freshmen arrived for orientation, students noticed the change. "I haven't heard anything much about why it's being covered," said senior Harold Rose. "No emails or none of that." This tragedy underscores the dangers of hazing and marks a pivotal moment for Greek life reform at Southern University and throughout the HBCU world. Former college football star, 24, fatally shot in Texas parking garage dispute; suspect faces murder charge

A former college football star was shot and killed following a physical altercation that turned deadly in a Texas parking garage last week. Former Texas Southern football player Tyler Martinez was tragically killed on July 11 when he was allegedly shot several times by 22-year-old Isaac Jasper Robinson during a dispute in the parking garage of an apartment complex where both men reportedly lived, Houston Police said this week. Police have since arrested and charged Robinson with murder. "Tyler was a young man who was loved by his teammates and his personality was larger than life," football chief of staff Charles Nichols said in a statement from the university. "In his mind, he was the best rapper on the team, and on the field, he was always trying to become a better football player. I will cherish our talks we had concerning life after football. I was so proud of him when he got his degree and started on his master's degree. He will truly be missed because there was only one Tyler Martinez." Police in Texas were called to the scene just after 8 p.m. Once there, officers found Martinez unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics. Houston police arrested Robinson after saying he "returned to the scene." He was charged with murder. According to KHOU, he is a current student at Texas Southern, but the two men were not known to one another. Texas Southern wide receivers coach Jerwin Wilson remembered Martinez as a "joy to be around." "He was a very adventurous person who could spark a light in any room," he said in a statement provided by the university. Martinez was a defensive lineman at Texas Southern where he registered 82 total tackles, including 5.5 sacks across four seasons. In his junior year, he was second on the team with 44 tackles and led the team with 3.5 sacks. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
