The all-rounder and his teammates had actually appealed for a leg-before against the in-form keeper-batter, opting for a review after the umpire shook his head only to burn it with an inside-edge detected on UltraEdge.
Unfortunately for Pant, the slight under-edge couldn't alter the direction of the ball and ensured it struck him at full pace near the toes.

India vs England 5th Test, London weather forecast: Rain set to stir things up after fiery pre-match drama at The Oval

India and England head into the final clash of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with the hosts leading 2-1, and the visitors desperate to square things up. The fifth and final Test begins on Thursday (July 31) at The Oval, where Shubman Gill's men will ride the momentum of a resilient comeback in Manchester. London: The Oval cricket ground ahead of the fifth Test cricket match between India and England, in London(PTI) However, the weather could disrupt the series decider. According to AccuWeather, Thursday could begin under gloomy skies with a chance of afternoon showers, with thunderstorms predicted between 3-5 PM. Early morning showers are also predicted, which can delay the toss. Rain is also predicted on Friday, with gloomy skies on Day 3. The UK Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms on Thursday, too. With an 80% chance of rain just before and at the scheduled start, a delayed toss now looks likely. The downpour isn't expected to relent either; forecasts predict a persistent 70-80% rain threat through most of the day, with conditions likely to ease only towards stumps. India have lost all four tosses in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy so far, and the weather conditions will be one of the key indicators in dictating the decision at the toss. With no margin for error, India are expected to go full tilt for a win to level the series. The team's character at Old Trafford has set up a fitting finale at The Ova, where not just the weather, but temperament and timing, may hold the key. A resilient fightback India were staring at defeat for large parts of the fourth Test after conceding a 311-run first-innings lead and losing both openers without a run on board in their second innings. England had piled on 669 after bowling India out for 358, and the game seemed to be slipping away within four days. But the visitors produced one of their most determined batting efforts overseas to defy the odds and walk away with a draw that keeps the series alive. KL Rahul (90) and Gill (103) stitched together a gritty partnership to steady the innings on the fourth evening, ensuring no further damage before stumps. On the final day, Ravindra Jadeja (107*) and Washington Sundar (101*) displayed remarkable composure and class to bat India to safety with unbeaten centuries. India will take heart from that performance heading into the final Test. The Oval surface has traditionally offered plenty to batters, especially in the first two innings. A recent County Championship fixture saw both sides amass close to 1500 runs, and the average first-innings total at the venue stands at 343.

India's Playing XI, 5th Test: With Bold Karun Nair Call, Gautam Gambhir Likely To Make 4 Changes

Trailing 1-2 in the 5-match series against England, India might just look to make a few bold changes to the team for the 5th and final Test of the assignment. With Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss out due to 'workload management', Arshdeep Singh or Prasidh Krishan is likely to be drafted into the team. However, this isn't the only change that is expected to be made by India at the Kennington Oval. As many as three more changes are likely to be witnessed as head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill look to win the final Test on the tour. According to a report in Indian Express, Karun Nair is expected to return to the team for the final match of the series after being dropped from the Manchester Test. Nair's inclusion, however, will come in place of an all-rounder, Shardul Thakur. It was B Sai Sudharsan who had replaced Nair in the 4th Test over poor form. But, the team looks set to trust the veteran batter one more time. Jasprit Bumrah and Anshul Kamboj are both likely to make way, with Akash Deep set to return to the playing XI. In place of Kamboj, the Indian team has to pick one pacer between Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna, which is truly a tough call to make. As per the report, both Arshdeep and Kuldeep Yadav are expected to be snubbed again, with the management persisting with the spin-bowling combination of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. Valuing the quality they both bring with the bat, Gambhir and Gill have managed to evade the temptation of adding Kuldeep, a pure spinner, to the playing XI. Hence, a total of 4 changes are expected to be made in the Indian team for the 5th Test.

Gambhir vs Fortis round 2 at The Oval: What happened when Indian head coach met pitch curator again

Just two days before the fifth and final Test between India and England at The Oval, tensions between the Indian team and the ground staff continued to simmer. On Wednesday, The Oval's curator Lee Fortis once again reportedly asked India head coach Gautam Gambhir and batter Shubman Gill to move away from the pitch area during training—this, just a day after an earlier altercation had already drawn attention. Fortis approached the group and gestured for them to shift away. While the trio moved, Gambhir reportedly did not acknowledge the curator, maintaining a cold silence throughout. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo — im_sandipan (@im_sandipan) The previous incident on Tuesday had seen Gambhir engage in a heated exchange with Fortis, pointing fingers and speaking animatedly. Kotak intervened and had a brief discussion with Fortis, trying to de-escalate the moment. Live Events On Thursday morning, the tension remained palpable. "You don't tell us what to do," Gambhir told Fortis from near the nets, as Kotak and India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate tried to hold a conversation with the curator. Fortis responded briefly before walking away. "It's not my job to be happy with him. I don't know, you have to ask him," Fortis told reporters. Kotak and a few other Indian management officials were later seen explaining the sequence of events to an English official, with Kotak doing most of the talking. Speaking ahead of the match, opener Shubman Gill said, "I don't know what exactly happened yesterday and why the pitch curator did what he did. We have played four matches, and no one tried to stop us. Everyone has played so much cricket, and the coaches and the captain have gone and seen the wicket so many times. I don't know what the fuss was all about." Gill added that it is standard for players and team staff to inspect pitches closely, especially if they are barefoot or wearing rubber spikes—something commonly done in international cricket preparations. The series stands at 2-1 with England having an edge, and the final Test begins today, with all eyes not just on the pitch—but what unfolds around it.
