Arrests and fake goods seized in South West barbershop raids
Fake goods have been seized and a number of arrests made in barbershop raids across the south west of England.In Gloucestershire, five people were arrested after officers from different agencies targeted 11 premises. More than 130 bags of fake designer goods were seized in Bristol. The action is part of a three-week nationwide money laundering campaign by the National Crime Agency (NCA), called Operation Machinize."Operations like this hopefully send a very clear message that our high streets are not a place to hide in plain sight," said Det Sgt Adrian Bray from the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU).
During the operation, a man, aged 40, was arrested on suspicion of fraud after officers raided two barbershops on Barton Street, Gloucester. He has been released on bail under investigation.Another man was arrested for immigration offences at premises where officers from Trading Standards seized illegal cigarettes and vapes.A 24-year-old man, from Gloucester, was also arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of methamphetamine. He has since been charged with theft.Two men, aged 33 and 18, from Gloucester, were arrested on suspicion of supplying cocaine and cannabis. The 18-year-old has since been charged with possession with intent to supply, while the 33-year-old was released under investigation.
'Cash-intensive businesses'
The SWROCU said it had visited 16 premises in total across the south west of England.In Bournemouth, an employee was found to be working illegally at one premises and vapes were being sold illegally at another.Premises were also visited in Swindon, Poole, Teignmouth, Saltash, Barnstaple and Braunton, they said. "Barbershops and other cash-intensive businesses like vape shops, nail bars, American-themed sweet shops and car washes are often used by criminals to launder the proceeds of their crimes," Det Sgt Bray said."Their aim is to mix legitimate funds and criminal profits to hinder investigations into their criminality. "We know they are also adept at exploiting vulnerable people to work in their businesses."

One townhouse in Glasgow's plush Park Circus was bought by Barrowman's Knox business group for £1.7m in 2020. The couple have now reportedly sold this to a photographer for £2m last year. Another nearby townhouse was sold for £2.8m, allegedly to a Scottish musician, who was not named. It was bought in July 2020 for just over £1.4m. A spokesperson for the NCA confirmed an investigation is still ongoing into PPE Medpro. 'The NCA opened an investigation in May 2021 into suspected criminal offences committed in the procurement of PPE contracts by PPE Medpro,' they said. 'This ongoing investigation remains a priority for the agency. In serious economic crime investigations these lines of enquiry can be incredibly complex – from worldwide financial tracing exercises to the need to examine large volumes of digital material. PPE Medpro is also being sued by the Department of Health and Social Care, amid claims that the gown supplied by the firm were not fit for use. Trump deploys National Guard to quell immigration protests in LA
US President Donald Trump has deployed 2,000 National Guardsmens to Los Angeles in response to protests over immigration enforcement in the city. The deployment of troops to LA comes after objections from California's Governor Gavin Newsom and a second day of clashes between hundreds of protesters and federal immigration authorities in riot gear. Confrontations escalated in the heavily Latino city of Paramount, south of Los Angeles. Federal agents were based at a Homeland Security office and made use of tear gas, flash-bangs, and pepper balls, while protesters threw rocks and debris at Border Patrol vehicles. Tensions were high after a series of sweeps by immigration authorities the previous day, as the weeklong tally of immigrant arrests in the city climbed past 100. A prominent union leader was arrested while protesting and accused of impeding law enforcement. The White House announced that Trump would deploy the Guard to 'address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester.' It wasn't clear when the troops would arrive. Newsom, a Democrat, said in a post on the social platform X that it was 'purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.' He later said the federal government wants a spectacle and urged people not to give them one by becoming violent. In a signal of the administration's aggressive approach, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened to deploy the US military. Writing on X, Trump insulted Newsom, saying that he had taken action due to the state leader and mayor of LA both being incapable of stopping protests. One woman claims the actor approached her in a Los Angeles cafe in 2006 when she was 16 and asked for her number. She claims he then called her "in the middle of the night" and tried to get her to attend a party - which she says she declined, adding: "I didn't even have a driver's license." The woman claims he then called her regularly for the following three weeks, allegedly "Always at one, two, three A.M" and claims the conversations: "Turned sexual. He'd ask things like, 'Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever sucked a d**k?'' A second woman claims he also approached her when she was 16 and acquired her number claims his conversations would occasionally be "flirtatious" - and that he once walked out in front of her completely naked when she was 17 when she was at his home. A third, described as having an "on-off affair" with the star claimed: 'He'd be sweet, then suddenly really demeaning. It was a switch.' A further woman alleges that the star exposed himself to her when she was at his home and "started masturbating" when she was 18. She claims he told her: "I want you to spit on it." The Air Mail article accuses Leto of approaching younger women and claims it was "known" in Hollywood that he liked younger women. Another woman told the publication: ' I remember being so physically ill to the point of throwing up when I passed billboards … for his films,' one woman tells me, 'and just wondering how everybody in L.A. knows.' The Mirror has contacted Leto's representatives for comment. While Air Mail adds that a representative of the star denied all allegations made against him in their report. Leto was once engaged to actress Cameron Diaz - who he was in a relationship with from 1999 until 2003. They were engaged in 2000 until their split three years later. He later dated Russian model Valery Kaufman from 2015 to 2022. He has never married - and has been romantically linked to a number of women in the past, including Scarlett Johansson and Paris Hilton.
