With Lilo & Stitch holding strong and Karate Kid: Legends debuting this weekend, box office projections are in focus. While Lilo & Stitch continues its lead, Karate Kid is predicted to enter with modest expectations as Mission: Impossible remains competitive.
Sony's Karate Kid: Legends is reportedly projected to open with $25–30 million across 3,600 domestic theaters (via Deadline).
Produced for a net $45 million, Karate Kid: Legends pays homage to the original franchise. It features Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, and Ben Wang. Its projected box office opening number is far below the $55.7 million debut of the 2010 reboot with Chan and Jaden Smith. That film still holds the franchise record with $176.6 million domestic and $359 million worldwide.
Karate Kid: Legends enters a crowded summer box office after a $330 million Memorial Day weekend. The review embargo has lifted, but no Rotten Tomatoes scores had appeared at press time.
Strong fan interest from Cobra Kai viewers and returning characters may help, but the film likely won't take the top spot. Paramount projects Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning to earn $32 million in its second weekend, surpassing Karate Kid: Legends despite a 50% drop.
Disney's Lilo & Stitch is reportedly projected to earn $60 million in its second weekend.
This marks a 59% drop from its $182.6 million Memorial Day debut. The decline is similar to other Disney live-action remakes like Aladdin (–53%) and The Little Mermaid (–57%). As of May 27, the film's domestic total reached $197.8 million, with Tuesday alone adding $15.2 million.
The live-action remake of the 2002 animated film continues to perform well globally. Its worldwide total now stands at $392.6 million (via Box Office Mojo). Heading into its second weekend, Lilo & Stitch remains the top box office title. Strong family turnout and wide availability in 4,410 theaters have helped maintain its momentum.

The Brief Philadelphia police discuss security preps ahead of big events in the city this weekend. The Roots Picnic Music Festival is on Saturday and Sunday and Philly Pride Month festivities kick off on Friday. The music festival and the Philadelphia Pride March attract large crowds annually. CENTER CITY - Security in Philadelphia is going to be high throughout the weekend due to all the events happening, with the Roots Picnic Music Festival and Philly Pride Month festivities and falling just days after a mass shooting in Fairmount Park. Heightened security This weekend, tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the Roots Picnic Music Festival and Philly Pride Month festivities, and Philadelphia police are planning a large security presence to match. In fact, Chief Inspector John Przepiorka, the Commanding Officer of the PPD Tactical Support Bureau, said in light of the mass shooting on Memorial Day there will be stepped-up deployment in the Philadelphia Park System. "That will consist of uniformed officers, as well as plain-clothes officers, riding through the parks, checking on the crowd capacity, what the size is – what's going on in the park – is it just kids at play or is there anything nefarious in the works – that kind of thing," said Chief Inspector Przepiorka. "We're going to keep a better eye on the parks throughout the area and again to make sure that people that can go there, can enjoy the park and have a great time, but also to prevent anything from occurring in the future." Planning Przepiorka said security planning for events starts weeks in advance, and sometimes months and even years, depending on the nature of the event. The department goes over deployment strategies for officers, state and federal partners and special operations units. "Sweeps in the morning with our K9 unit looking for anything that may be suspicious. We will then also have our uniformed officers present at the venue site itself, which could also incorporate officers on bicycles to have more roaming capabilities of being in the area, being visible and present," said Przepiorka. Big picture view In addition to deployment strategies, police also collaborate with partners at the Intelligence Bureau on the local, state and federal level to look for any information to help police identify an issue before it happens. "Easy for things to get raucous and out of control, but I think we do a great job of striking that balance to make people feel safe and still able to have as much fun as possible," said Aaron Corpora of South Philly. "I've been to some Pride events and Roots last year as well, and my girlfriend will be here this weekend. She's looking forward to it. She loves the Roots event, so she'll be out there this weekend without a doubt."

In his end-of-show monologue on Real Time Friday (watch it above), Maher used the prosecution of Sean 'Diddy' Combs as a prism for how sexual misconduct is viewed in society and in the justice system. 'A lot has changed' since the initial wave of allegations against Harvey Weinstein and many others in 2017, he maintained. If you're 'MeToo-ing' someone, it's not helpful to your case if you texted him, 'me too!'' A graphic on the screen next to Maher displayed text messages from Ventura to Combs presented at trial, including one that read, 'I'm always ready to freak off.' Years ago, 'when women felt, for good reason, that 'OG predators' like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein would never be held accountable, why not at least get something out of it?' Maher said. Most of the initially accused perpetrators were surrounded by 'all sorts of enablers' (assistants, cops, agents, 'cowards' afraid to defy the person signing their paycheck), Maher recalled. In that era, 'it was not illogical for an abused woman to say, 'Well, if I can't get justice for my pain, can I at least get a receipt? A coupon?'' Maher did acknowledge, 'as counter-intuitive as it seems, why an abused woman would send complimentary text.' Unlike in past eras, though, he argued, 'We're not in the 'no one listens to women or takes them seriously' era anymore. Operators are actually standing by to take your calls.' Statistics show more women have reported claims of abuse and mistreatment over the past seven-plus years, Maher pointed out. 'I understand why it can be difficult for women to leave an abusive relationship,' he said. 'But this should be society's new grand bargain. We take every allegation seriously, but don't tell me anymore about your contemporaneous account that you said to two friends 10 years ago. Tell the police right away. Don't wait a decade. Don't journal about it. Don't turn it into a one-woman show. And most importantly, don't keep f–king him. Your only contemporaneous notes about what he did should be a police report.' The show-business sparkle of the music business also can't be eliminated from the Diddy situation or others that have played out in Hollywood, Maher continued. 'If we're going to have an honest conversation about abuse, we also have to have an honest conversation about what people are willing to do for stardom. If you want a No. 1 record so bad you'll take a No. 1 in the face, some of that is on you,' he said. 'And if you're doing it for love, well, c'mon, Oprah and Dr. Phil and every podcaster in the world by now have done a million shows about 'abuse is not love' and 'abusers don't change.'' R&B singer Ike Turner 'was a psycho, just like Diddy,' Maher said. 'But in an era when there was no movement to help her, Tina Turner somehow got away and she did it with 36 cents in her pocket and a mobile card.'
