2 women caught extorting 3L from man at Jaipur cafe
Jaipur: Two women involved in a major sextortion and blackmail racket were caught red-handed at a cafe in Jaipur after they extorted cheques worth Rs 3 lakh from a man by threatening to file a false rape case. DCP (west) Amit Kumar said the accused have been identified as Meetu Pareek (47), a resident of Vidhyut Nagar under Chitrakoot Police Station, and Indu Verma (47), a resident of Chander Badrai Nagar in Ajmer. He added the duo targeted affluent men, threatening them with fabricated rape charges and coercing them into paying large sums of money to 'settle' the matter quietly. Investigations revealed that the women forced their victims to sign affidavits and payment agreements under pressure. They also provided their own affidavits confirming receipt of the payments, likely to create a false sense of legal closure and avoid future claims. The extortion racket was busted at a cafe in Vaishali Nagar on June 16. Acting on a tip-off, a team of plainclothes officers swooped in just as the accused collected the cheques. Police arrested them on the spot and seized Rs 2.22 lakh in cash from one of the women's purses—believed to be extorted from previous victims. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo According to officials, the duo allegedly lured wealthy men into staying with them at hotels and then blackmailed them with threats of filing false rape cases unless hefty payments—starting from Rs 50 lakh—were made. The investigation began after a man lodged a complaint on June 13. He claimed two of his friends had sent him to deliver a large sum of cash to Pareek Meetu at her Chitrakoot residence. When questioned, the friends admitted they had stayed with the women at a luxury hotel in Kukas on May 21. "The two men claimed that the women agreed to come with them of their own accord without any pressure or force," said an official. However, police said, they claimed that a few days later, the women began threatening to file rape charges unless they were paid Rs 50 lakh.

Liquor fuelled fire at judge's house that burnt cash: Report
Burnt pieces of Rs 500 notes 'found' near Justice Yashwant Varma's residence NEW DELHI: The high-level judicial panel's inquiry report has said huge amounts of unexplained cash were found burnt in Justice Yashwant Varma's official residence on the night of March 14, as the fire that broke out inside the storeroom was fuelled by alcohol from bottles in a liquor cabinet inside the room. A fireman, who was part of the team that doused the fire in the storeroom, had deposed that "while dousing, due to clinking of liquor bottles on the left side, the fire intensity increased on the right side of the store and while dousing the right side, the stacked material on the right side got wet and fell down and there were also currency notes visible on the floor". In its report, the panel explained this thus, "The presence of liquor cabinet located close to the switch box is also a matter of record which has been noticed by the committee in its spot inspection and it is common knowledge that liquor is a highly volatile liquid and the bottles, having been affected by the fire, would have ignited and broken by the heat which are part of the debris being cleared, and leading to the tinkling sound. " When the fire broke out in the bungalow's storeroom, Justice Varma was out of town and no one in the house, including his daughter and private secretary, had access to the key and the security guards had to break the lock to give access to firefighters and policemen, the report said.

Elderly bookstore owner in Delhi loses Rs 15 lakh in fake electricity bill scam
New Delhi: An 80-year-old owner of a bookstore in New Delhi's Connaught Place lost Rs 15 lakh after falling victim to an elaborate cyber scam in which he was threatened by the fraudster that the power supply to his establishment would be cut. The fraud happened on June 16 when the elderly man got a WhatsApp call from a person posing as an official of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). The caller alleged that the electricity bill was not paid for a significant period. He issued a stern warning that power to the shop would be disconnected within 30 minutes unless immediate payment was made. The victim, a resident of Jor Bagh, Lodhi Road, was working in his shop in Connaught Place when the call came. It made him anxious. "Thereafter, while I was still on the WhatsApp call, I received a link to an invoice for Rs 12 on my WhatsApp. I was extremely frightened and overwhelmed by his threatening tone and urgent demands, which compelled me to click on the link to pay the bill immediately. However, I informed him that I do not use any form of netbanking or UPI applications for making payments. In response, he insisted that I provide my credit or debit card details instead. Feeling intense pressure and fear due to his persistent and intimidating behaviour, I reluctantly shared my bank credit card information with him," the complainant said. Within minutes of the call ending, his phone was bombarded with transaction alerts showing unauthorised debits amounting to nearly Rs 15.45 lakh from his bank account. Realising the enormity of the breach, the victim immediately contacted his bank, requesting a freeze on his credit card and account to prevent further losses. On June 17, the victim lodged a complaint at Connaught Place police station.
