GIVE donates $20,000 to Children's Advocacy Center of Smith County
TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Girls Invested In Volunteer Efforts, also known as GIVE, celebrated their tenth anniversary on Sunday by awarding their largest grant ever to the Children's Advocacy Center of Smith County.
East Texas Better Business Bureau shreds over 30,000 pounds of documents at Shred Day event
GIVE, a group of high school girls modeled off of the Women's Fund of Smith County, raised money for the $20,000 grant by selling handmade bracelets. The grant will help fund a new play therapist at the Children's Advocacy Center of Smith County.
'The Children's Advocacy Center is going to use the $20,000 to fund a play therapist for their initiatives that they do in Smith County,' GIVE chair Christi Khalaf said. 'So it's going to mean a lot to get someone that can work with the younger age group and to impact and children in that area.'
The CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System even chipped into the grant by matching the funds raised by GIVE. To learn more, visit GIVE online.

House budget proposal cuts SNAP, Medicaid in major rollback
TYLER, Texas (KETK) — The House has passed a budget proposal within the 'Big Beautiful Bill' that would cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid. This results in the largest rollback of food assistance in our nation's history, according to 'Feeding Texas'. Nacogdoches holds second annual Duck Derby fundraiser for county donations 'This represents a 30 percent cut to our nation's most important and effective anti-hunger program,' Vice President of Feeding Texas Jamie Olsen said. SNAP currently feeds 3 million Texans and cutting funding for this program would result in $300 billion lost in aid. 'Texas would be required to pay 1.8 billion dollars a year starting in 2028,' Olsen said. The estimated total of Texans at risk of losing all SNAP benefits is 392,000 and 806,000 are at risk of losing partial benefits. Additionally, the bill could leave one million Texans without health insurance, specifically putting elderly and pregnant women in rural areas at risk. 'We're urging Congress to ensure no one is forced to choose between food and other basic needs,' the East Texas Food Bank said. The Senate is projected to vote on the budget as early as June 16. Gov. Abbott names new leaders to Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission
CROCKETT, Texas (KETK) — Governor Greg Abbott has appointed John A. McCall Jr., O.D. to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission and Paul Foster as its chairman. Owner of Crockett Eye Clinic, McCall is the senior vice president and a founder of Vision Source, co-founder and co-owner of Logansport Surgical Center, and founder and owner of Stealth Vision Optics and Rifles. McCall is also the former city councilman and mayor of Crockett. McCall has also been a private pilot for 25 years and has over 3800 hours flying. McCall has won several awards, including Texas Optometrist of the Year, Texas Young Optometrist of the Year and the Texas Distinguished Service Award. Paul L. Foster of El Paso is not only the Wildlife Commission's newest chairman but also on the board of trustees of the Baylor College of Medicine. Foster has served as a commissioner for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission since 2021 and is a former director of the National Petroleum Refiners Association and the Western Petroleum Marketers Association. Foster has received the Baylor University Distinguished Alumni Award and was inducted into the 2013 Class of the Texas Business Hall of Fame. 2 promising East Texas students awarded scholarships before beginning their collegiate career's
TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Two incoming Tyler Junior College students were awarded scholarships from the East Texas Leadership Summit. Elysian Fields ISD announces interim superintendent Diego Castro, a recent Tyler Legacy High School graduate, and Fernanda Palacios, a recent Winnsboro High School graduate, were both awarded scholarships during the summit. The summit was held by the Hispanic Professionals Association of Tyler (HPAT) as they strive to create opportunities for learning, networking and collaboration in the East Texas community. Courtesy of Tyler Junior Community College Castro will be attending TJC this fall and will be part of the Texas A&M Engineering Academy focusing on mechanical engineering. Palacios will also be attending TJC this summer looking to begin a career in radiologic technology. East Texas Leadership Summit co-chair Ebb Torres and his organization will continue to strive to empower students across East Texas. 'All profits from the East Texas Leadership Summit go toward providing scholarships for students in Smith and surrounding counties,' Torres said 'HPAT is on a passionate mission to uplift and empower the promising young minds of our community.'
