Great Barrier Reef coral cover decline shows 'ecosystem under stress'
According to the latest annual survey from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), hard coral cover declines in 2025 were largely driven by climate change-induced heat stress, leading to mass bleaching events and exacerbated by cyclones, floods, and outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish.
While the coral losses were significant, they came off a high base, with observed coral cover now sitting at "near to long-term average levels".
Rising ocean temperatures, floods, and cyclones were all compounding the impacts of recent bleaching events.
"We are now seeing increased volatility in the levels of hard coral cover — this is a phenomenon that emerged over the last 15 years and points to an ecosystem under stress," Dr Emslie said.
AIMS has been monitoring and surveying the Great Barrier Reef for 39 years. It noted the 2024 mass bleaching event was the fifth to hit the region since 2016, and the largest ever recorded on the Great Barrier Reef.
The stunning, varied colour of the corals in the Great Barrier Reef is the result of a unique, symbiotic relationship between the hard coral and zooxanthellae algae. The coral gives the algae a protective environment, and the algae feeds the coral.
But when the ocean gets too hot, the coral polyps can become stressed and expel the zooxanthellae, which triggers the bleaching effect. Without food for too long, the coral can starve and die.
In the latest AIMS survey results, the most impacted coral species were the Acropora, which is susceptible to heat stress and a favoured food of the crown-of-thorns starfish.
"These corals are the fastest to grow and are the first to go," Dr Emslie said.
"This is also the first time we've seen substantial bleaching impacts in the southern region, leading to the largest annual decline since monitoring began."
AIMS surveys 124 individual reefs across the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and analyses results for three regions: the Northern GBR from Cape York to Cooktown, Central GBR from Cooktown to Proserpine, and Southern GBR from Proserpine to Gladstone.
One of the main measures used to monitor the condition of the reef is the percentage of hard coral cover, which describes the proportion of the sea floor that is covered in hard coral.
Compared to figures from 2024, the Southern GBR saw a 30 per cent decline in coral cover — the largest annual decline ever recorded, bringing it below the long-term average.
Coral cover in the Central and Northern GBR remains above long-term averages, but both regions saw significant declines compared to 2024, of 14 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.
Based on historical surveys, AIMS defines reefs with between 30-50 per cent coral cover as "high value" — that is, they're relatively healthy.
Of the reefs surveyed, AIMS found that two had less than 10 per cent coral cover, 77 between 10 and 30 per cent cover, 33 between 30 and 50 per cent cover, 10 between 50 and 75 per cent cover, and two had greater than 75 per cent coral cover.
While there has been an overall decline, the Great Barrier Reef has "fared relatively better" than other parts of the world because of its size and its varied habitats.
The Caribbean, for example, has suffered high mortality on almost all of its reefs, and very little coral remains.
"The Great Barrier Reef currently retains higher coral cover than many reefs globally; however, mass coral bleaching events are now occurring with increasing frequency, while recovery periods are decreasing," the report said.
One of the successes noted in the survey was the ongoing efforts to monitor and control crown-of-thorns starfish.
Crown-of-thorns starfish can grow up to 80 centimetres in diameter, with up to 21 arms covered in hundreds of toxin-tipped thorns, and they can consume vast amounts of coral.
The starfish are native to the Great Barrier Reef, but since the 1960s their numbers have increased significantly.
Exactly what is behind the booming population is still being studied, but increased nutrient availability from land run-off, which increases phytoplankton, has created more food for COTS larvae, and may be leading to more adults.
Over the past year, the federal government's crown-of-thorns starfish control program has culled over 50,000 starfish, injecting them with vinegar or ox bile.
"Due to crown-of-thorns starfish control activities, there were no potential, established, or severe outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish recorded on Central GBR reefs in 2025," the AIMS report noted.
As global carbon emissions continue to rise, so too does the temperature of the sea water that covers the Great Barrier Reef.
The latest reef update from the Reef Authority shows that even as water temperatures declined during winter, they were still around 0.8 degrees above the long-term average.
Earlier this year, the GBR experienced its sixth mass bleaching event since 2016. Up until the 1980s, coral bleaching at this scale was rare.
"This year, Western Australian reefs also experienced the worst heat stress on record. It's the first time we've seen a single bleaching event affect almost all the coral reefs in Australia," AIMS CEO Selina Stead said.
"Mass bleaching events are becoming more intense and are occurring with more frequency, as evidenced by the mass bleaching events of 2024 and 2025."
This was the second time in the past decade that a reef experienced back-to-back bleaching events in consecutive years. Coral reef systems can take up to 10-15 years to recover.
"The results from this year really underscore the amount of stress the Great Barrier Reef is under," Dr Emslie said.

Cockatoos that feel the beat perform 30 distinct dance moves, study shows
Cockatoos can head-bang, body roll and side-step intentionally to music, according to a new study by Charles Sturt University. Researchers have analysed 45 social media videos of cockatoos dancing and identified 30 distinct movements, 17 of which had never been documented before. In the study, published today in the journal PLOS One, researchers found some cockatoos had their own signature moves, unique to each individual, while other species appeared to favour different styles. To further investigate the behaviour of the cockatoos, the research team went beyond the screen and into the field to Wagga Wagga Zoo in New South Wales. There, they studied six cockatoos, including two Major Mitchells, two sulphur-crested cockatoos and two galahs. Over a 20-minute period, each bird experienced either silence, music or a podcast. Lead researcher Natasha Lubke chose the playlist, opting for Avicii's The Nights for the music and She's on the Money for the podcast. "It's a great podcast. We're just educating the birds on their finances," Ms Lubke joked. One particularly enthusiastic Major Mitchell cockatoo made a total of 257 moves in sequence while listening to a 20-minute loop of The Nights. In both parts of the study — the online video analysis and the zoo observation — dancing was observed in 10 of the 21 known cockatoo species in the Cacatuidae family of the parrot species. Many of the dance moves were similar to courtship displays, indicating their dancing may have originated as courtship behaviour that has been redirected towards their owners. Spontaneous dancing in time to music had only been officially recorded in humans until Snowball, the sulphur-crested cockatoo, went viral for dancing to the Backstreet Boys more than a decade ago. In 2019, in a Current Biology study, professor of psychology at Tufts University, Aniruddh Patel, and his colleagues explored Snowball's ability to dance spontaneously, challenging the long-held belief that sophisticated movement to music was uniquely human. The study showed that Snowball developed 16 distinct moves without any formal training to dance. But it was not known if other cockatoos would develop other moves, or if a parrot's dance moves were largely determined by its genetic makeup as a member of a particular species. "By studying dancing to music in numerous parrots across several species, the new study found 17 new moves, and also showed that relatedness between species did not predict how similar the dance moves of different parrots were," Professor Patel said. While it may seem like an amusing curiosity, for scientists it raises many questions. "Why is this behaviour seen in parrots but not in our closest living relatives — chimpanzees and bonobos — when raised by humans?" Professor Patel said. "After all, ape brains are much closer to ours in size and overall structure than parrot brains are, and genetically parrots are more closely related to extinct dinosaurs than to humans." Scientists are developing neuroscientific theories to explain the mystery of why dancing to music emerges without any special training in some human-raised parrots but not in human-raised apes. It's still unclear what motivates cockatoos to dance. Ms Lubke has a theory. "That rules out the theory they're just dancing because people are dancing. I think they're definitely dancing, and it appears to be a form of play behaviour — they're doing it because they're in a positive welfare state." Researchers hope the discovery could lead to new ways to enrich the lives of captive birds — particularly intelligent parrots who may suffer in environments lacking stimulation. "The similarities with human dancing make it hard to argue against well-developed cognitive and emotional processes in parrots," said co-author Rafael Freire, an expert in animal behaviour. "Playing music to parrots may improve their welfare," Professor Freire said. "Further research would be beneficial to determine if music can trigger dance in captive birds and serve as a form of environmental enrichment."

Unusual visitor to Port Coogee Marina
Marine scientists have spotted a fish species in the Port Coogee Marina that is usually found deep under the surface. A Stott's goatfish was seen by marine scientists Glen Whisson and Alexandra Hoschke of Aqua Research and Monitoring Services during regular fish diversity studies at the marina in April for the City of Cockburn. Dr Whisson said the species was first described by former WA Museum curator of fishes Dr Barry Hutchins in 1990, who at the time had seen it only once in inshore waters of the continental shelf. 'The typical depth range for Stott's goatfish is greater than 50m, so an observation in the shallow waters of the marina was highly unusual,' Dr Whisson said. WA Museum curator of fishes Glenn Moore agreed it was an 'unusual record'. 'Although this species occurs all the way from around Albany to Shark Bay, it usually lives in deeper offshore areas between 30 and 60m deep,' Dr Moore said. 'I know of a few shallower records but they are from muddy trawl grounds like the middle of Shark Bay. It's amazing to see this species in the marina.' The study also uncovered a juvenile Indo-Pacific sergeant major which is usually found further north. 'This juvenile most likely arrived on the Leeuwin Current during the most recent marine heatwave, washing into the marina with floating seaweed,' Dr Whisson said. Marina manager Samantha Standish said the city held a fish diversity study at the marina every three years and results from the new study would be available by the end of the year. A 2022 Fish Diversity Study revealed 81 finfish species, including 15 not previously recorded in the 2019 study. The marina was recently accredited for the third time from the Marina Industries Association and for the first time as fish-friendly. It achieved a 98.4 per cent clean marina score and a 96.15 per cent fish-friendly score. 'The city values the local environment and creating an environmentally aware, fish-friendly marina forms part of that philosophy,' Ms Standish said. 'One small way we do that at the marina is with a floating Seabin designed to capture any rubbish floating on the water's surface, including many micro and macro plastics. 'The device, dubbed Bob due to its up and down motion in the water, has collected about 2.5kg of rubbish including cigarette butts, rope and fast-food packaging which usually ends up in the water due to the wind. 'Other actions we take to encourage and support the existence of fish life in the marina include regular audits of boats in the marina, ensuring fishers use the designated fishing jetty only, and installing additional floating jetties to provide more structures for marine life. 'We will soon install eight information plaques along 100m of the Chieftain Esplanade boardwalk to inform and educate members of the public about the marina's fish and coral diversity.' Mayor Logan Howlett said the city worked hard to protect its waterways and oceans to support marine biodiversity and healthy aquatic ecosystems.
