Joseph expressed hope that the tendering process will commence this year, enabling the project to begin in 2026.
'Now it's subject to SPA approval, then we can proceed straight to tender. I hope we can tender it this year and start work next year,' he said.
He highlighted that Phase 4 of the project addresses a vital 'missing link' between Jalan Aman and Kampung Hilir, and aims to protect approximately 618 hectares of central Sibu, including Bukit Assek.
He said this to reporters when met during a sacrificial meat distribution event at Masjid Al-Muhajirin Sentosa yesterday, held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha.
Also in attendance were Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Bukit Assek chairman Datuk Chieng Buong Toon and mosque chairman Ramli Hussin.
During the event, Joseph contributed one cow to the sacrificial ceremony, which saw a total of seven cows slaughtered for distribution to families in need.
'We respect the values of Islam, particularly compassion, charity, and helping the poor. These are universal values shared by all, regardless of religion, background, or race,' he said.
This year's distribution targeted the underprivileged families, reinforcing the celebration's message of solidarity and support across the community. — The Borneo Post

KUANTAN, Aug 20 — A 55-year-old woman doctor lost RM468,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam advertised on Facebook in May. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the victim was attracted by the advertisement and was later contacted by an individual posing as a representative of Nikko Asset Management, allegedly based in Singapore. 'The suspect promised returns of 80 to 128 per cent within a month. Convinced by the offer, the victim made 14 transfers into four different accounts between June 17 and August 6, using her Employees Provident Fund savings,' he said in a statement today. Yahaya said the victim was then shown falsified profit statements through pictures sent by the suspect, indicating that her investment had grown to RM800,000, including the capital. 'The victim was subsequently asked to pay another RM152,725, supposedly for tax purposes, before she could withdraw the profits. She became suspicious and refused to comply,' he said. According to Yahaya, checks revealed that Nikko Asset Management is a legitimate investment management company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with branches worldwide, but its name had been misused by scammers in this case. The victim lodged a report at the Kuantan District Police Headquarters yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

‘By the people, for the people': Putrajaya's MyGov super app brings 34 govt services together under one digital roof
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The Digital Ministry today introduced the beta version of the MyGov app, described as an 'an app by the people for the people' developed fully in-house as part of building Malaysia's own digital infrastructure. Digital Ministry secretary-general Fabian Bigar said the app consolidates 34 government services including road tax renewals, OKU card application, health records from MySejahtera, clinic appointment bookings, traffic summons checks and access to key documents. 'Let me be frank, bringing all these systems together was no easy task. Many different vendors are involved and coordination among ministries is critical. 'We are still working on it till today and this Beta version will hopefully be used by the mass public,' said Fabian during a media briefing here. The app will also feature an AI chatbot to assist users. Some services such as MyKad replacement applications and online payments for traffic summonses are still under development. Passport renewal via immigration will be added in a future version. According to Fabian, data privacy and security remain top priorities. 'Our focus from the start has been data privacy and security. We will keep refining the app based on people's feedback and the journey of usage,' he said. To fine tune the app, the ministry will hold citizen lab sessions at its centres or by mobile centres where members of the public can test the app and provide feedback. Asked about integration with existing government apps such as MySejahtera or My JPJ, Fabian said the long-term goal is to unify services. He acknowledged public scepticism about government apps but said similar platforms have already been adopted successfully in neighbouring countries like Singapore. 'Ideally, we want all government apps integrated in the future. Some contracts and vendor arrangements take time to unwind, but at least now we have an interface that gives a seamless experience, even if the processing is still done in the back end,' he said. 'As for scepticism, that's normal. Anything government launches comes with questions on data security but that's why this beta is important, to get public feedback and build confidence,' he added. Development on the app began in April 2024 under a task force with agencies gradually pooling their services under one platform. The Beta version will be launched this Saturday, with the hope of a full roll-out by December 12, 2025 the second year anniversary of the establishment of the Digital Ministry. Looking ahead, Fabian said several key services are already in the pipeline with agreement from the respective agencies. These include MyKad replacement applications under the National Registration Department (JPN), driving licence and motor vehicle licence renewals as well as compound payments under the Road Transport Department (JPJ), traffic summons payments via the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and passport renewals under the Immigration Department (JIM). The app supports iOS 18 and Android 8 and above, and are available in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The Beta version will be officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this Saturday August 23 at the Program Madani Rakyat Negeri Sembilan in Nilai.

Malaysia needs 100,000 more engineers to meet development goals, says works minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Malaysia is currently facing a shortage of approximately 100,000 engineers to meet the country's development needs, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He said the current number of registered engineers has yet to achieve the ideal ratio of one engineer for every 100 Malaysians. 'At present, we have only 200,000 registered engineers, and we still need about 100,000 more to meet demand,' he said after officiating the 2025 National Engineering Convention (NEC 2025) here today. Nanta highlighted that efforts to address this shortage are already underway, particularly through the enhancement of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes. 'I welcome the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to expand TVET programmes, with a target of 60,000 participants. We are confident this initiative will help us meet the 100,000 engineer target soon,' he added. He also stressed the importance of retaining engineering graduates within the field, noting the challenge of attracting them to other sectors due to higher starting salaries. 'We do not want engineering graduates to switch careers. The government is exploring ways to ensure they remain motivated and committed to pursuing engineering careers,' Nanta said. The Ministry of Works (KKR) is examining strategies to make the engineering profession more appealing, including creating an environment that offers better job prospects for graduates. On the recent motorcycle accident on Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari here, Nanta added that the incident occurred in an area under the responsibility of the state government and its appointed concessionaire. 'If the accident was caused by road damage, I urge the concessionaire to take swift action to prevent similar incidents in the future,' he said. A report by Infrasel Sdn Bhd and the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) indicated that the accident took place near a housing project, where road conditions had become sandy. As an immediate measure, the concessionaire is undertaking cleaning operations and will soon begin road grading to ensure the safety of the route. — Bernama
