England seek revenge against Spain as rivals meet in Euro final
The showdown at St Jakob-Park in the Swiss city of Basel promises to be a fascinating contest between a Spain side looking to add the continental crown to their world title, and an England team who can secure back-to-back European Championship victories, and make up for the heartache of 2023 in the process.
Spain beat England 1-0 in Sydney to win the World Cup for the first time, with Olga Carmona scoring the only goal -- another victory for La Roja on Sunday would cement their status as the dominant force in women's international football.
'We have so much respect for them and the quality they have, but we also believe in ourselves, that we can really step up,' said England's Ella Toone on Friday.
Toone, 25, scored the first goal for the Lionesses when they beat Germany 2-1 after extra time at Wembley to win the last Women's Euros three years ago, and has played a key role in Switzerland on their run to a third straight major tournament final.
'It is amazing. To make three consecutive finals for England is something that we can all be so proud of,' she said at the team's base in Zurich.
That remarkable run has come under the management of Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch coach who took charge in 2021 and immediately turned them into contenders.
'She is a great manager, someone we all have a lot of belief in and we know we are in good hands. It is an unbelievable achievement for her,' added Toone of Wiegman, who also won the Euros with her native Netherlands in 2017.
It has not been an easy road to the final for England this time, with the Lionesses coming back from the brink of elimination more than once.
Their title defence started with a 2-1 defeat by France in their opening group game three weeks ago.
The Lionesses recovered to reach the knockout stages by hammering the Netherlands and Wales, but then required a remarkable comeback from two goals down to eventually beat Sweden on penalties in the quarter-finals.
They then trailed to Italy in the semi-finals in Geneva until a 96th-minute goal by Michelle Agyemang forced extra time, and Chloe Kelly scored the winner just as another shoot-out loomed.
'The belief in the squad, the resilience and the togetherness in this group is just so special,' said Kelly, who has made a big impact from the bench in the last two rounds.
But it remains to be seen if that resilience will be enough against a brilliant Spain side led by reigning Ballon d'Or Bonmati.
The Barcelona midfielder -- who was in hospital with viral meningitis just before the tournament started -- scored the extra-time winner as Spain edged Germany in the last four to reach a first ever European Championship final.
'All the hard work we have put in has paid off,' said coach Montse Tome, who took over from Jorge Vilda following the 2023 World Cup triumph.
Spain could have as many as seven starters on Sunday who featured in that game in Sydney, including Alexia Putellas -- she was only a bit-part player at the World Cup as she recovered from a knee injury, but Bonmati's predecessor as Ballon d'Or winner has been much more influential here.
The theme of revenge could also apply to the Spaniards, who were knocked out of the last Euros by England, going down in extra time in the quarter-finals.
Just two months ago an Arsenal side featuring several members of Wiegman's current England squad defeated Barcelona in the final of the Women's Champions League.
Seven of the players who started for Barcelona that day in Lisbon are likely to start for Spain on Sunday, including Bonmati and Putellas.
If they come out on top they will be the first nation to win the Women's World Cup and Euros back-to-back since Germany in 2007 and 2009, and they can also follow in the footsteps of their men's counterparts -- Spain beat England in the final of the men's Euro last year.

Joseph's rest extended as Shepherd returns to WI squad for Pakistan ODIs
Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph's rest has been extended to manage his workload, while all-rounder Romario Shepherd makes a return to West Indies' ODI squad for the three-match ODI series against Pakistan, starting at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Thursday. Cricket West Indies (CWI) said the core of 15-member squad remains unchanged from recent victories over England, Bangladesh and on tour in the United Kingdom, as they bid for a fourth consecutive home ODI series win. Following the series opener on Aug.8, the next two matches will be played on Aug.10 and 12. West Indies had recently lost T20I series to Pakistan by 2-1, with all games held at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida. It was also the seventh successive time Pakistan won a T20I series against the West Indies. The series against Pakistan is the part of the build-up towards the 2027 Men's ODI World Cup. Head coach Daren Sammy said the series against Pakistan would be another chance to strengthen their ODI unit and continue the momentum held from the last 18 months. 'Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success.' 'The upcoming matches against teams like Pakistan, who are ranked higher, provide crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points to improve our standing ahead of the World Cup,' he said. Earlier, Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub combined for a 138 opening partnership and Pakistan defeated the West Indies by 13 runs to capture their T20 International Series. Pakistan won the series opener by 14 runs but dropped the second match by two wickets to set up a Sunday night. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Pakistan were rewarded with a powerhouse performance by Farhan and Ayub. Pakistan went 189 for four as Farhan hammered the hosts for 74 runs on 53 balls, smashing five sixes and three fours, while Ayub lasted 19 overs, finishing on 66 from 49 balls with two sixes and four fours. Farhan was caught by West Indies captain Shai Hope at long off from a delivery by Shamar Joseph on the second ball of the 17th over. Hasan Nawaz entered but was retired after only 15 runs, caught by Romario Shepherd at long off from a delivery by Roston Chase on the penultimate ball of the 18th over. Agencies

Christen finishes 4th in disrupted Tour de Pologne stage 3, Molano third in Burgos
Wednesday afternoon brought a third-place finish for Sebastián Molano in stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos, with Jan Christen following up with a fourth-place finish for UAE Team Emirates-XRG in stage 3 of the Tour de Pologne. Christen's result, however, came on a day marred by a big crash within the final 20km. Owing to the need to get ambulances towards the front of proceedings, the stage was briefly neutralised, with time gaps not counted towards the general classification. As a result, only the stage honours were up for grabs in the old mining city of Wałbrzych. Christen gave it a good go and punched his ticket for the raffle, but the young Swiss rider was ultimately swamped by those who had returned to the peloton following the neutralisation. Although the peloton had dwindled down to around 20 riders as the race came to its crucial moments, the group swelled back to its usual size after the neutralisation, making the eventual sprint hotly contested. As Ben Turner (Ineos Grenadiers) picked up the day's top prize, Christen made his way up to third place in the general classification, owing to the unfortunate abandonment of Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek). Both Rafał Majka and Filippo Baroncini of UAE Team Emirates-XRG hit the deck in the crash, with Majka able to remount his bike and finish in the first group over the line. A full medical report will be distributed on the Emirati squad's social media accounts on Wednesday evening. Speaking after the finish, Christen's thoughts were with those affected by the crash, as he saw his race disrupted by the neutralisation. Christen: 'I did not have the best legs all day, but then when we started the steep climbs I started to feel good and I saw that the other guys suffered a lot. I was pretty excited for the last steep kicker to try something there. 'But unfortunately, there was a crazy crash, and then we stopped the race. It is a bit of a pity because I had really good legs and I felt I could go into the yellow jersey today and take some seconds back, but I hope all the guys involved are ok and tomorrow we will go again.' At the Vuelta a Burgos, Sebastián Molano showed a fine burst of speed to finish in third place on stage 2. Coming to a head with a sprinters' showdown in Buniel, the second stage was always destined to be one for the fast men, and so it proved. After a routine 150km through the Burgos region, the teams of the sprinters prepared their trains for the final 10km. It was here that UAE Team Emirates-XRG rallied around Molano and piloted the Colombian into position. Making his return to racing after a month in his home country, the 30-year-old was raring to go as the peloton ducked inside 1km to go. Rui Oliveira produced his reliable lead-out before Molano launched his sprint some 100m from the finish line. It was here that three riders spread across the road and vied it out for the day's honours. Alongside Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) and Matteo Malucelli (XDS Astana Team), Molano made his bid for the line, with each rider throwing their bike in an attempt to gain the upper hand. As it was, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG sprinter was forced to settle for third place. Taking positives from his performance, however, Molano was upbeat about the week to come. Molano: 'I'm happy with my sprint, though I would have dearly loved the win. It was a very fast finish and the guys did well to put me in the right position. The riders coming from behind carried a lot of speed and it was hard to hold them off on the last straight. 'There are a lot of hills from here until the end but it's possible there may be another chance on stage 4. The legs are good and I'm hungry to go for a win this week.' Agencies
