USWNT handles Ireland again in friendly as Emma Hayes continues to rotate in new faces
On a steamy Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati's TQL Stadium, the U.S. women's national team took the field for the 765th time and delivered another emphatic victory, 4-0 against Ireland.
Like their Thursday meeting with Ireland in Commerce City, Colorado, Sunday's match featured four different goal scorers in Lynn Biyendolo (who wore the captain's armband to start the match), Izzy Rodriguez, Yazmeen Ryan, and Alyssa Thompson.

Sunday's victory was a special one as it marked the program's 600th win. It also continued a recent trend of increased offense. Since February, the team has netted 15 goals across eight friendlies. In the June window alone, they cruised past Jamaica 4-0 and defeated China 3-0 before the pair of 4-0 wins against Ireland.
In the 11th minute on Sunday, forward Emma Sears delivered a perfect cross to Biyendolo, who opened the scoring tally with a clean volley to the back of the net. Just before halftime, Kansas City Current defender Izzy Rodriguez, who earned her first cap and first start, pounced on a rebounded ball in the box and hammered home a half volley to double the U.S. lead.
Yazmeen Ryan also netted her first international goal in the 66th minute when she received a pass from Olivia Moultrie and snuck the ball past a crowded penalty area. And Alyssa Thompson, who scored against Ireland in their Thursday night meeting, needed just six minutes after subbing on near the end of the match to find the back of the net again.

'Everybody's meant to be here. If you were not meant to be here, you wouldn't be here,' Biyendolo told TNT's analysts postgame. ' But take a deep breath and just play hard. One thing that is non-negotiable in this team is just effort. So when things are going right, just put in the effort. … Take a deep breath and let's just play and play with joy.'
Biyendolo's words echoed the ethos Hayes is installing leading up to the 2027 World Cup.
Hayes is still molding the team in her image and is not afraid to give new faces a chance. She rolled out a completely different starting XI from Thursday's game. It was the second time in her short tenure with the team that she made wholesale changes between games, something that hadn't happened in nearly a quarter-century before her arrival. The last time the USWNT rotated all 11 players between matches was 2001, according to the U.S. Soccer data. It's now happened twice just this year.

It's a bold approach, and one that speaks to Hayes' long-term vision.
Hayes handed first senior caps to two new faces: midfielder Sam Meza and left back Rodriguez. Meza and Rodriguez become the 281st and 282nd players to represent the USWNT, and notably, the 13th and 14th players of Hispanic descent to do so, a meaningful footnote in a squad long criticized for its lack of Latino representation.
'I feel like everybody is not just trusting the process, but they're carrying out all the things we asked them to do,' Hayes said after the game in Cincinnati. 'I thought Sam Meza was outstanding in the pivot position. I thought Izzy grew into the game, showed her quality deliveries.'
She called defender Jordan Bugg, who just turned 18 and started this match, 'a super football player.'

Of the rotation, Hayes acknowledged that it's 'not easy to go and change a team to 11 and perform and raise a bar, but the players did that, and I'm extremely proud of them.'
For this busy week, Hayes gave her Euro players a break, except for Naomi Girma, who plays for Chelsea, the only European-based player on the roster. Her intentions to rest players accordingly extended to the pool of camp players as well, especially those easing their way back from; Girma was subbed off during the second half of Thursday's match and didn't play at all on Sunday, while midfielder Rose Lavelle, a Cincinnati native who recently returned to the USWNT after recovering from an ankle injury, was not subbed on until the 85th minute in her hometown game.
'Emma put me in as a cameo at the end, it was always the plan,' said Lavelle postgame. 'It is always great to be back home … We have one more game, but it was a fun camp.'

Sunday's game was the USWNT's second of three that will take place within the span of a week. Next, the team heads to Washington, D.C. where they will face Canada on Wednesday at Audi Field.

Lakers rumors: Contenders lurking after Dorian Finney-Smith declines $15.4 million option
The post Lakers rumors: Contenders lurking after Dorian Finney-Smith declines $15.4 million option appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Lakers' biggest goal this offseason has to be addressing their lack of depth and getting a big man or two in the room after gutting their roster to acquire Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks last offseason. While Los Angeles waits to see what big men it can make a run after, it was also waiting on the decision from Dorian Finney-Smith. Advertisement Finney-Smith had a player option worth $15.4 million this offseason, and he is choosing to hit the open market instead. The former Maverick has officially declined his player option and will be a free agent when it opens on Monday, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Charania also stated that there will be contending teams that are after Finney-Smith in free agency. 'Los Angeles Lakers forward Dorian Finney-Smith is declining his $15.4 million player option for the 2025-26 season and will enter free agency, sources tell ESPN,' Charania reported on X, formerly Twitter. 'Multiple contending teams are expected to pursue Finney-Smith beginning Monday night and a Lakers return is possible.' While the Lakers are still in play for Finney-Smith, it appears that it's going to take a substantial raise in order to keep him in Los Angeles. The Florida product has an ideal skillset on the wing for a contender, with the ability to guard elite perimeter scorers and also knock down open shots from the 3-point line. Advertisement He did just that for the Lakers last season, making nearly 40% of his triples after arriving in Los Angeles following a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. He was also a big piece of the defense for JJ Redick and company and was one of the few players that the first-year head coach trusted in the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Finney-Smith played with Doncic during their time in Dallas and they even went to the Western Conference Finals together in 2022, so those two already have good chemistry together. As a result, the Lakers may decide that it's worth paying a premium to keep the 32-year old around for the long haul as they pivot to building for the future around their new superstar. Angels Fans React to Mike Trout Post on Monday
Angels Fans React to Mike Trout Post on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is playing in his fifteenth major-league season since being selected 25th overall in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Advertisement Widely regarded as the best player of his generation, Trout won American League Rookie of the Year in 2012, has captured three AL MVP Awards, and is an 11-time All-Star. In 2019, he signed a 12-year, $426.5 million extension that keeps him in Anaheim through 2030 and includes a full no-trade clause. Despite his personal accolades, Trout has yet to experience postseason success with the Angels, who have not won a playoff game during his career. At age 33, he's batting just .230 with a .788 OPS—well below his career averages of .297 and .984—signaling his best days may be behind him. Los Angeles Angels right fielder Mike Trout (27)© Rich Storry-Imagn Images On Monday, the Angels posted a photo of Trout in an attempt to get him more votes for the All-Star Game in Atlanta. Advertisement The team wrote, '#VoteTrout daily, now until Wednesday (7/2) at 9am PT, to help him get to Atlanta!' Fans reacted to the Angels post on X. "Let's hope he has a good series in Atlanta," a fan said. Another added, "Nope. He's not deserving." One fan wrote, "If Trout crushes in ATL, he'll def be an All-Star." "Vote for the best," said a fan. "And vote only Trout for AL OF!" said another. Trout secured two All-Star Game MVP Awards in 2016 and 2019, rising to the occasion with baseball's biggest stars. The Angels have surged in June, improving to 41–42 and sitting only two games back of a wild-card spot. With October contention within reach, a rebound for Trout is critical—both to boost Anaheim's lineup and to earn him a spot on the All-Star roster. (AP) — Shea Langeliers smashed a three-run homer in his first plate appearance since coming off the injured list, and Lawrence Butler broke a ninth-inning tie with a two-run triple that lifted the Athletics over the Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Monday night. The Athletics made two key defensive plays in the bottom of the eighth to keep it tied at 4. Advertisement The Rays had runners on first and second with no outs when Junior Caminero hit a hard grounder to third, but Max Muncy stepped on the bag and threw to first for a double play. Josh Lowe then singled to left field but Colby Thomas threw a dart to home plate to get Brandon Lowe. Butler sent a shot to the wall in left-center field to score runners from second and third on his second triple of the season. Sean Newcomb (2-4) got the final out in the eighth, and Mason Miller worked a scoreless ninth to earn his 16th save. Brent Rooker had an RBI single for the Athletics, who had lost six of eight. The Rays, coming off a defeat at Baltimore, had won five straight and 10 of their last 11 following a loss. Advertisement Pete Fairbanks (3-2) allowed three hits and two runs in the ninth. Key moment The first hit for the Rays came in the fourth on Caminero's two-run homer — his 21st of the season — over the center-field wall. Jonathan Aranda and Jose Caballero added RBI singles to tie it at 4. Key stat The Athletics, who allowed four home runs Sunday, have given up 125 longballs this season, the second-most in team history before the All-Star break.
