New faces lead US women to familiar result: 4-0 win over Ireland

CINCINNATI: The US women's national team's depth was on display Sunday in Cincinnati when the squad's backups dominated Ireland for a 4-0 victory in a friendly. US coach Emma Hayes made 11 changes from the lineup that defeated Ireland 4-0 on Thursday and didn't miss a beat as the Americans won their fourth straight match without allowing a goal. In fact, Ireland did not put a shot on frame. Izzy Rodriguez, who made her USWNT debut along with Sam Meza, scored in the 42nd minute for a 2-0 lead while Emma Sears played a part in the first three goals. Sears and Rodriguez played together at Ohio State, less than two hours away. Sandwiching the Rodriguez goal, Lynn Biyendolo opened the scoring in the 11th minute and Yazmeen Ryan extended the lead to 3-0 in the 66th with her first goal. Alyssa Thompson made it 4-0 in the 86th on an assist by Claire Hutton. The win was the 600th in USWNT history in just 765 matches. It was such a young lineup that Biyendolo had almost twice as many appearances (81) as the rest of the starting lineup (41), which represented the fewest combined matches of any USWNT lineup in the past 24 years. It didn't matter. Sears made a cross to Biyendolo in the middle of the box and she ripped a shot for her 25th goal. Rodriguez got on the board when Sears took an entry pass from Olivia Moultrie and forced a save by Courtney Brosnan (six saves). The ball came to Rodriguez and she did not hesitate on the rebound. The role was reversed on the third goal. Sears fed Moultrie and she found an unmarked Ryan. A minute after Thompson's goal, hometown favorite Rose Lavelle entered the match to a standing ovation and nearly scored in the ensuing minute. The US will get a much sterner test on Wednesday when they play Canada in Washington, D.C., to complete the three-match window.

USWNT handles Ireland again in friendly as Emma Hayes continues to rotate in new faces

On a steamy Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati's TQL Stadium, the U.S. women's national team took the field for the 765th time and delivered another emphatic victory, 4-0 against Ireland. Like their Thursday meeting with Ireland in Commerce City, Colorado, Sunday's match featured four different goal scorers in Lynn Biyendolo (who wore the captain's armband to start the match), Izzy Rodriguez, Yazmeen Ryan, and Alyssa Thompson. Advertisement Sunday's victory was a special one as it marked the program's 600th win. It also continued a recent trend of increased offense. Since February, the team has netted 15 goals across eight friendlies. In the June window alone, they cruised past Jamaica 4-0 and defeated China 3-0 before the pair of 4-0 wins against Ireland. In the 11th minute on Sunday, forward Emma Sears delivered a perfect cross to Biyendolo, who opened the scoring tally with a clean volley to the back of the net. Just before halftime, Kansas City Current defender Izzy Rodriguez, who earned her first cap and first start, pounced on a rebounded ball in the box and hammered home a half volley to double the U.S. lead. Yazmeen Ryan also netted her first international goal in the 66th minute when she received a pass from Olivia Moultrie and snuck the ball past a crowded penalty area. And Alyssa Thompson, who scored against Ireland in their Thursday night meeting, needed just six minutes after subbing on near the end of the match to find the back of the net again. 40 years of setting the standard.40 years of raising the bar. That is the U.S. Way. — U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) June 29, 2025 'Everybody's meant to be here. If you were not meant to be here, you wouldn't be here,' Biyendolo told TNT's analysts postgame. ' But take a deep breath and just play hard. One thing that is non-negotiable in this team is just effort. So when things are going right, just put in the effort. … Take a deep breath and let's just play and play with joy.' Biyendolo's words echoed the ethos Hayes is installing leading up to the 2027 World Cup. Hayes is still molding the team in her image and is not afraid to give new faces a chance. She rolled out a completely different starting XI from Thursday's game. It was the second time in her short tenure with the team that she made wholesale changes between games, something that hadn't happened in nearly a quarter-century before her arrival. The last time the USWNT rotated all 11 players between matches was 2001, according to the U.S. Soccer data. It's now happened twice just this year. Advertisement It's a bold approach, and one that speaks to Hayes' long-term vision. Hayes handed first senior caps to two new faces: midfielder Sam Meza and left back Rodriguez. Meza and Rodriguez become the 281st and 282nd players to represent the USWNT, and notably, the 13th and 14th players of Hispanic descent to do so, a meaningful footnote in a squad long criticized for its lack of Latino representation. 'I feel like everybody is not just trusting the process, but they're carrying out all the things we asked them to do,' Hayes said after the game in Cincinnati. 'I thought Sam Meza was outstanding in the pivot position. I thought Izzy grew into the game, showed her quality deliveries.' She called defender Jordan Bugg, who just turned 18 and started this match, 'a super football player.' Also we promise we didn't forget Alyssa Thompson's goal in the 86th minute!!#USWNT x @VW — U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) June 29, 2025 Of the rotation, Hayes acknowledged that it's 'not easy to go and change a team to 11 and perform and raise a bar, but the players did that, and I'm extremely proud of them.' For this busy week, Hayes gave her Euro players a break, except for Naomi Girma, who plays for Chelsea, the only European-based player on the roster. Her intentions to rest players accordingly extended to the pool of camp players as well, especially those easing their way back from; Girma was subbed off during the second half of Thursday's match and didn't play at all on Sunday, while midfielder Rose Lavelle, a Cincinnati native who recently returned to the USWNT after recovering from an ankle injury, was not subbed on until the 85th minute in her hometown game. 'Emma put me in as a cameo at the end, it was always the plan,' said Lavelle postgame. 'It is always great to be back home … We have one more game, but it was a fun camp.' Advertisement Sunday's game was the USWNT's second of three that will take place within the span of a week. Next, the team heads to Washington, D.C. where they will face Canada on Wednesday at Audi Field. USA swat Girls in Green aside in scorching Cincinnati

USA 4-0 Republic of Ireland The Republic of Ireland fell to a second successive 4-0 friendly defeat against the USA in sweltering conditions at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. Outclassed in high altitude against Emma Hayes' world No 1-ranked side in Denver last Friday morning, this was always going to be another very difficult task for an Irish shorn of their strongest players. They got off to a rocky start when Lynn Biyendolo broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, but they did have some bright moments as the half wore on. Any hopes of an unlikely recovery melted however when Izzy Rodriguez made it 2-0 a few minutes before the break. On the turnaround, the Americans punished tired Irish legs with Yazmeen Ryan and the electric Alyssa Thompson wrapping up a convincing victory. Ireland will rest up now before October's Nations League promotion/relegation play-off against Belgium when the likes of Katie McCabe and Denise O'Sullivan should return to offer a welcome injection of quality. 11 mins: USA 1-0 Ireland The Irish exposed down their left-hand side as a USA move ends with Lynn Biyendolo scoring #rtesport 📺 💻 — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) June 29, 2025 Temperatures tipped into the 30s for the 17th meeting of these countries. Ireland had lost all 16 previous encounters so optimism was not high, particularly given the unforgiving humidity. Boss Carla Ward made four changes, bringing in Abbie Larkin, Tyler Toland, Saoirse Noonan and Marissa Sheva. Meanwhile Emma Hayes went with a completely different USA XI, entrusting a youthful outfit eager to take their chance to impress. It didn't take them long to do damage. Razor-sharp one and two-touch football carved the Irish open, with Emma Sears tearing down the right channel and clipping in a great ball that Lynn Biyendolo confidently volleyed high into the net. With their tails up, the USA kept on coming. Croix Bethune slashed a left-footed effort a couple of yards wide from just inside the area; then Lynn Biyendolo's goal was ruled out because Yazmeen Ryan had fouled Jessie Stapleton in the build-up. A 25-minute water break helped the Girls in Green. They came out of that huddle fresher, purposeful. Emily Murphy and Abbie Larkin were the two brightest sparks, both showing neat touches and good pace to get their opponents backpedalling. One Murphy-triggered attack saw Noona feed Kyra Carusa, only for the striker to slam her shot into the sidenetting. Ireland were getting a foothold, however - as was the case in Denver - the USA nabbed a killer second just before half-time. HT: USA 2-0 Ireland Debutant Izzy Rodriguez makes it 2 after Courtney Brosnan initially made a fine save #rtesport 📺 💻 — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) June 29, 2025 Emma Sears was initially denied at point-blank range by a tremendous Brosnan save but the goalkeeper's parry dropped nicely for Izzy Rodriguez, who knocked home the rebound. Ward introduced Lucy Quinn, Hayley Nolan and Megan Connolly for the second half, switching to a 3-5-2 formation to try and subdue the hosts' flying wide players. It did not have the desire effect. Olivia Moultrie, just 19 years old, pulled the strings as the USA constantly pushed and probed. Brosnan batted away a Biyendolo shot; Croix Bethune had an attempt charged down inside the area; then Moultrie surged forward and drilled one past the post. A third goal felt inevitable, and it came in the 66th minute. Substitute Sam Coffey started the move, releasing Ryan through the centre. Sears did well to race onto Ryan overcooked pass and pick out Moultrie, who teed up the marauding Ryan to slide home a nice finish. Ireland enjoyed a few sporadic counters in the opening half but they could offer nothing in the game's later stages. Visibly shattered, they sat back and soaked up the pressure as best they could. When Anna Patten went off for Ruesha Littlejohn, the Aston Villa centre-half immediately headed into the dressing room to find an ice bath. 86 mins: USA 4-0 Ireland Only on the pitch a few minutes, Alyssa Thompson again finds the net v Ireland #rtesport @FAIWomen 📺 💻 — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) June 29, 2025 The sight of Thompson coming off the bench would have further demoralised the visitors. She terrorised Ireland in Denver, and duly got herself among the goals again with four minutes to go. A smart Emma Sears ball over the top caught Ireland flat - Thompson killed it with a good first touch and then smashed home an emphatic low finish. Hometown hero Rose Lavelle came on to the delight of the natives for the closing stages, but this game had long been done and dusted by then. Ireland will head for home happy to get a rest, and hope some harsh lessons have been learned before focus turns to those important autumn dates with the Belgians. USA: Mandy McGlynn; Emily Sams, Jordyn Bugg, Tara McKeown; Lynn Biyendolo (Capt), Croix Bethune, Sam Meza, Izzy Rodriguez; Olivia Moultrie, Emma Sears, Yazmeen Ryan

US Women Beat Ireland 4-0 for the Second Straight Match

Izzy Rodriguez scored in her first appearance for the national team, and the US shut out Ireland 4–0 on Sunday. Lynn Biyendolo, Yazmeen Ryan, and Alyssa Thompson also scored for the US, which beat Ireland by an identical score in Commerce City, Colorado, on Thursday. The US went up early when Biyendolo took a cross from Emma Sears and calmly scored her 25th international goal in the 11th minute. Biyendolo was captain for the match. Left back Rodriguez started in her debut and scored on a rebound goal in the 42nd minute to make it 2–0. After halftime, Sears kept the ball in play and sent it to Olivia Moultrie, who crossed to Ryan for the goal in the 66th minute. It was Ryan's first international goal. Thompson came off the bench and scored in her second straight match in the 86th minute. Rose Lavelle, who is from Cincinnati, came in as a substitute in the 87th minute after the crowd at TQL Stadium started chanting her name. Lavelle scored in Thursday's match, making her first appearance of the year for the national team after having ankle surgery. In addition to Rodriguez, Seattle Reign midfielder Sam Meza also started in her debut for the team. Coach Vlatko Andonovski made eleven changes to the starting lineup from Thursday's match. Twenty-four players have made their debut for the national team in 24 games under Andonovski, who has been tasked with preparing the team for qualification for the Women's World Cup. The US was without many of its Europe-based players, including Lindsay Horan and Crystal Dunn, whom Andonovski was resting following the European season. Ireland was also missing a few stars, including Katie McCabe, who was given time off after the season with Arsenal, and Denise O'Sullivan, who plays for the North Carolina Courage and is injured. The US next plays Canada on Wednesday at Audi Field in Washington.
