Plans submitted for £30m Corran Ferry facilities upgrade

BBC News10-03-2025

Plans have been submitted for £30m of infrastructure improvements for Europe's busiest single-vessel ferry service.Highland Council's Corran Ferry carries about 270,000 cars and 11,000 commercial vehicles a year. The five minute crossing of Loch Linnhe's Corran Narrows links the wider Lochaber area with communities in the Ardgour peninsula in the west. The alternative journey by road around the loch takes about two hours.
Highland Council has submitted a planning application to build a new slipway and overnight berthing at Ardgour. Also, on the Nether Lochaber side, constructing a new marshalling area for vehicles, cycle path, parking and a new protective barrier called a breakwater.Highland Council would provide £10m towards the cost, while £20m would come from the UK government through the Inverness and Highland City Region Deal.Separately, the local authority hopes to replace the service's aging ferry. The Scottish government has said £28m could be used from the city region deal towards a new electric ferry. The money was initially allocated for an upgrade of the Longman interchange on the A9, but councillors appealed to the Scottish government to change investment priorities.Over the years, the ferry service has been hit by significant disruption with major breakdowns affecting the main vessel, MV Corran, and its relief boat - MV Maid of Glencoul. In October 2023, MV Corran returned to service after a year out of action. The boat was withdrawn for maintenance the previous October but this work was hampered by delays.

Kenny Logan leads celebrity team on 555-mile Ireland cycle in memory of Doddie Weir

A team of celebrities and rugby players are preparing for a 555-mile cycle challenge around the island of Ireland to raise funds for research into motor neurone disease (MND) in memory of the late Doddie Weir. Weir died of MND aged 52 in November 2022, after years of campaigning to raise awareness of the condition and funds into research. Scottish rugby legend Kenny Logan and his television presenter wife Gabby are among those preparing to take part in Doddie'5 Lions Challenge, cycling around 100 miles a day for six days, departing from Belfast on Sunday. The team will cycle through counties including Galway, Limerick and Cork, to arrive in Dublin on June 20 and deliver the match ball to the Aviva Stadium for the British and Irish Lions' 1888 Cup clash with Argentina. Some participants have had to pull out due to injury, including Weir's son Hamish, who will instead drive a support vehicle, while Scotland rugby stars Bryan Redpath and Hugo Southwell, and ex-Lions and Ireland international Rob Henderson, will also no longer be able to take part. Football legend Ally McCoist, actor Jamie Bamber, former Harlequins player Mel Deane, and cancer campaigner Iain Ward will all take part alongside the Logans. The challenge has raised more than £300,000 for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association so far, with hopes of reaching £500,000 before Sunday. Kenny Logan will lead the team, and he has been doing intensive hill sessions on an exercise bike twice a week ahead of his second endurance fundraiser for MND research. He joined the Edinburgh to Paris cycle in 2023 which raised almost £1 million. He said: 'We've lost a few to injury, and it just shows how demanding this is going to be. I've had my own aches and pains. No major injuries thankfully but I've definitely been reminded why I probably shouldn't be moving this much at my age. 'I'm most nervous about the hills. I convinced myself Ireland was flat – it's definitely not. But nerves are good. I've always had them before a big challenge. 'The support's been incredible. We've still got time to push, and every penny counts. 'Since Doddie died, awareness has grown massively – but we still need to fund research. The foundation has committed nearly £20 million already, which is phenomenal, but it's only the beginning. 'Doddie would be proud – but he'd be telling us to go further and faster. That's why we're doing this.' He joked that McCoist needed some help with bike maintenance. Logan said: 'Ally's been out and about, but his bike broke down the other day. I told him not to trust himself to check the batteries on his fancy gears – someone else needs to do that for him.'

Scottish city is home to one of the most popular place for a walk this summer, according to TikTok

Scotland ranks three times in the UK's top ten walks as TikTok's 'hot girl walk' trend booms Scotland has claimed three spots in a new top ten list of the UK's most popular walks, as the viral TikTok trend known as the 'hot girl walk' continues to sweep the nation just in time for summer. Searches for 'hot girl walk' have skyrocketed by 529 percent in the past month alone, as more and more people look to embrace the feel-good trend now the sun is out and the days are longer. ‌ Despite the name, the trend isn't just for girls, it encourages anyone to head out for a four-mile stroll, while listening to motivational podcasts or repeating positive affirmations. ‌ Car leasing experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts have analysed trending TikTok searches to reveal the most in-demand walks for summer 2025, and three Scottish trails have made the cut, proving that the country's scenic walking spots are just as popular online as they are in real life. Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh was the highest ranked Scottish entry, coming in at number four overall. With its sweeping 360-degree views over the city, it's no surprise the extinct volcano is a magnet for both tourists and locals. TikTok searches for Arthur's Seat have hit 106,000 in the UK, with users sharing everything from sunrise selfies to peaceful sunset strolls. Its central location and ample parking near Holyrood Palace and Meadowbank make it an easy option for a spontaneous day trip into the capital. Meanwhile, the Glenfinnan Viaduct Trail in the Highlands secured tenth place with 38,700 TikTok searches. Best known for its appearance in the Harry Potter films, the iconic viaduct draws visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the Jacobite steam train as it crosses the bridge. The trail also extends beyond the photo spot, offering a rewarding countryside hike through a picturesque Highland valley. ‌ Rounding out Scotland's top entries was Ben A'an in the Trossachs, which remains a favourite for those after a shorter hike with spectacular views. Its compact climb offers a powerful sense of achievement with stunning panoramic scenery at the summit, ideal for reflection and that all-important affirmation time. Urban walks near major cities also ranked highly, with Richmond Park in London topping the overall list thanks to its 192,000 TikTok searches. ‌ The leafy seven-mile loop is popular with Londoners looking to escape the bustle without leaving the city limits, and there are plenty of shorter three to four-mile routes on offer too. The park is well-equipped with cafes, toilet facilities and parking across several locations.
