Sacred Mysteries: Why Pope Francis chose his place of burial

Pope Francis was the first pope to take the name of St Francis of Assisi, 'the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation'. A mosaic of St Francis is prominent in the church where he has chosen to be buried, St Mary Major.
The mosaic was put up in the apse inside the church by Pope Nicholas IV, the first member of the Franciscan Order elected pope, dying four years later, two days before Easter 1292. That pope appears as a smaller kneeling figure amid the mosaics of saints against gold, signifying heaven. He is buried in St Mary Major as 'A son of St Francis'.
This is not, however, why Pope Francis wanted to be buried in the basilica, which he visited dozens of times as pope, always before and after a foreign trip. He came in first place to pray before the ancient icon of the Virgin Mary and Child, entitled Salus Populi Romani.
This title, signifying both the health and the salvation of the Roman people, is a pre-Christian idea. The icon, of Byzantine convention, is reputed to have arrived in Rome early in the reign of Pope Gregory the Great (590-604), who sent St Augustine of Canterbury to convert England. Gregory was said to have invoked God by the virtue of the icon to quell a plague in Rome.
Most icons of that period in the East were destroyed in outbreaks of iconoclasm. This icon's style is said to be more that of the 9th century or later, but it has been battered and amended over the ages. Restoration that ended in 2022 gave it a more or less satisfactory form.
It has been much loved, not least by Pope Francis, who though bang up to date in matters of climate change and liturgy, embraced ancient devotions.
This led to the memorable scene in the rain on Friday March 27 2020 during the Covid pandemic. The Pope stood alone in St Peter's Square, with the icon Salus Populi Romani and a large crucifix from the church of St Marcellus (invoked in the early 16th century against plague).
Some complained later that rain had damaged the paint on the crucifix, which in the circumstances sounds like complaining that seawater damaged the paintwork of a lifeboat.
In the wet the Pope limped to the icon and said a silent prayer, then to the crucifix, the wounded feet of which he kissed. He blessed the city and the world, Urbi et Orbi, with a monstrance displaying the Blessed Sacrament.
His flabby Italo-Argentine face reflected his determination. He insisted on appearing outdoors when all Italy was locked down, not because he didn't believe in Covid, but because he did believe in God.
It was an anti-Lear effect: instead of raging like the tragic king with the storm, he stood, an envelope of calm in the tempest of the city and the world.
He spoke a short meditation on the passage in the Gospel (Mark 35-41) where Jesus is asleep in the boat in the storm. Of Covid he said: 'Thick darkness has gathered over our squares, our streets and our cities; it has taken over our lives, filling everything with a deafening silence and a distressing void.'
He quoted the appeal of the frightened Apostles in the boat with Jesus, 'Do you not care if we perish?', and his reply after calming the seas: 'Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?'
Pope Francis pointed out we were all in the same boat and had better row together. 'I would like this evening to entrust you all to the Lord, through the intercession of Mary, Health of the People and Star of the stormy Sea.'
In a niche marked 'Franciscus' near the entrance to the chapel at St Mary Major where the icon is revered, he is to be buried today.

The 1,400-year-old plaque, found among the ruins of a church in Abu Dhabi, shows a depiction of a cross with a stepped pyramid evoking Golgotha - where Christians believe Jesus was crucified A 1,400 year old plaque showing a cross is transforming experts' knowledge of Christianity's eastward reach. ‌ Researchers excavating Abu Dhabi's Sir Bani Yas Island discovered the relic, which displays a stepped pyramid reminiscent of Golgotha - the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified - with foliage emerging from its foundation, according to the Daily Mail. ‌ The artefact was unearthed amongst the remains of a church and monastery, suggesting a Christian settlement that prospered on the island throughout the seventh and eighth centuries, while recent reports show how a previously unexplored 'Area X' begins to give up its religious secrets. ‌ Early Christians Christianity during this era is commonly linked with the Levant, Mesopotamia and sections of Europe, making proof of a flourishing community on a southeastern Arabian Gulf island both surprising and historically important, , reports the Express. Simultaneously, the area was experiencing dramatic religious transformation as Islam was emerging and expanding swiftly throughout Arabia, whilst ancient pagan customs persisted and Christianity was believed to be declining. Nevertheless, the existence of a thriving Christian settlement here contradicts that belief. Christianity flourished Maria Gajewska, chief archaeologist at the location, explained: "Every element of the cross incorporates regional motifs. ‌ "It tells us that Christianity in this region was not only present but flourished, adapting visually to its local context. We had settlements of Christians that were not just existing but were clearly thriving." Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism, hailed the discovery as "a powerful testament to the UAE's profound and enduring values of coexistence and cultural openness," adding that the find underscores a history of peaceful religious diversity in the region. This season's excavations also unearthed pottery, glass artefacts and a small seagreen bottle that may have contained oil or rosewater. ‌ The cross itself measures about 10.6 inches long, 6.7 inches wide and roughly 0.8 inches thick. Archaeologists speculate it could have been an object of veneration, mounted on a wall with worshippers kneeling before it. Hager Al Menhali, an Emirati archaeologist at the department, told The National: "The plaster was resting face down and something about it caught my attention." ‌ She noted a "distinct fingerprint on the back," suggesting it was left by the person who crafted the stucco plaque. Future studies will involve radiocarbon dating and further exploration of the courtyard houses, which could eventually be incorporated into a broader visitor trail. "These discoveries deepen our connection to the past and inspire future generations to embrace the spirit of unity and mutual respect that has long defined our community," Al Mubarak said. ‌ Findings from the dig suggested that senior monks may have resided in the courtyard buildings, making their way to the church for worship or utilising the spaces for spiritual retreats. The well-constructed structures, built from limestone and coral with water cisterns, indicate a comfortable lifestyle rather than a purely hermitic existence. The Christian community was part of the Church of the East, a denomination that extended from the Middle East to China. ‌ The Sir Bani Yas find provides a rare insight into how Christianity not only endured but flourished eastward, connecting Arabian Gulf communities to the broader narrative of the faith's expansion towards India and Asia. Sir Bani Yas Signs of a church and monastery on Sir Bani Yas, dating to the seventh and eighth centuries, were first unearthed in the early 1990s. A further monastery, probably connected to the same church, was found on an island in Umm Al Quwain in 2022. Comparable sites have also been located in Kuwait, Iran and Saudi Arabia. ‌ Archaeologists continue to examine why the Sir Bani Yas settlement went into decline. The church is thought to have been fracturing before Islam's emergence, plagued by internal divisions as competing branches pursued independence. However, historical evidence indicates that early Christian and Islamic communities in the area coexisted peacefully and engaged in trade. To date, no external event has been pinpointed as the reason for the site's desertion. Intriguingly, archaeologists have noted that the buildings seem remarkably tidy, with scant evidence of collapse or debris. This implies that the inhabitants may have departed voluntarily, intending to return, rather than being driven away by catastrophe or strife.

'Stand down': Tributes pour in for Skye and Lochaber mountain rescuer Bryan Powell

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to Bryan Powell, a deeply respected member of the mountain rescue community in Skye and Lochaber. Mr Powell's sudden loss has left a profound mark on those who worked with him – and on many who never met him but were touched by the selfless work he did for others. He died last month, at the age of 54, and a celebration on Skye is being planned in his honour. A dedicated volunteer with Skye Mountain Rescue Team (MRT), Mr Powell was also a former member of Lochaber MRT. He was also a committed dog handler with the Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) Scotland. Over the years, he gave his time, his energy, and his quiet strength to search and rescue operations across the Highlands. He was described as 'diligent, modest, and utterly devoted,' in a moving Skye MRT tribute. The team add: 'Bryan brought his quiet expertise to countless search and rescue operations – from the large, complex incidents to the smaller, no-less-important ones. 'He was quiet, kind, self-effacing and thoughtful, never with a bad word for anyone.' Alongside his mountain rescue work, Mr Powell was known for his special bond with his dogs, Storm and Gwen. He handled them with deep affection and skill and was rightly proud of their many achievements. In his final callout, he helped locate and rescue a young Skye Trail walker who had fallen near Scorrybreac. 'None of us knew it would be the last time we'd see him,' the team said. The post poignantly added: 'Stand down, Dog Bryan, and rest in peace.' Throughout the challenges of the Covid pandemic, Mr Powell was a steady presence – guiding his teammates with a calm, measured voice and offering reassurance when it was needed most. His legacy, say those who knew him, is one of kindness, quiet courage and unwavering service. Others in the rescue community have also expressed their sorrow and admiration. 'An absolute gentleman and a pleasure to have worked alongside,' said Kintail Mountain Rescue. 'Such a good guy,' wrote fellow MRT volunteer Mark Chadwick online. 'He certainly made a very positive and supportive contribution to my – all too short – time knowing him.' 'A true gentleman for whom I had the utmost respect,' another friend shared. 'He is sorely missed.' A memorial service to celebrate Mr Powell's life will take place at the Sligachan Hotel on Saturday September 6, from 2-4pm. A funeral notice reads: 'Please come as you are, wearing whatever makes you feel most yourself. 'Bryan valued comfort and authenticity.' Mourners are encouraged to bring stories – of kindness, adventure, humour or humanity – and to share in the memory of a man who gave so much of himself in the service of others.
