Red Crescent cadets sharpen emergency response skills at first aid camp in Kuching
KUCHING (July 6): Over 70 cadets from Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) branches across Sarawak took part in the state-level First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) competition camp recently at SMK Bandar Kuching No.1 here.
The three-day event emphasised practical, hands-on learning and immersive simulations, offering a comprehensive experience that went beyond-theory.
According to a statement from the MRC Sarawak Chapter yesterday, the camp aimed to enhance participants' knowledge and competence in emergency response, with a strong focus on first aid, CPR and the use of AED.
In addition, the camp also sought to strengthen the spirit of volunteerism, inter-branch cooperation, and youth leadership development among MRC members statewide.
Participants underwent rigorous yet engaging training covering a wide range of emergency topics, including bleeding control, fractures, burns, seizures, poisoning, CPR, AED use, and safe casualty transport.
Each training module combined theoretical understanding with real-life practice, under the guidance of experienced facilitators and first aid trainers.
Among the camp's highlights were simulation-based competitions such as the CPR and AED Competition, Team First Aid Challenge, and the Community-Based First Aid Simulation.
These competitions provided an opportunity for participants to put their skills to the test under pressure, simulating real emergencies where teamwork, composure and precision were crucial.
The camp also included a session on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), followed by a structured assessment to increase awareness of humanitarian responsibilities and ethical conduct in crisis situations.
MRC Sarawak director Chai King Sing said the camp was designed to equip youth with skills to save lives, lead with confidence, and serve with heart.
'By combining training, teamwork, and discipline, we are nurturing future community leaders who are not only knowledgeable, but also empathic and ready to serve.'
Chai noted that the energy, discipline, and spirit shown by the young cadets throughout the programme had been remarkable, saying: 'We hope to see more statewide efforts like this that bring our members together to grow, connect and serve.'
Meanwhile, MRC Sarawak Chapter stated that it will keep expanding the programme, describing it as key toward making first aid a core life skill among youth.

AEDs may be required in new development projects
A guideline is being developed in Selangor to ensure new developments are equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for emergency situations. State public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said they were looking at other states that had adopted a similar guideline, including Penang. 'If we manage to enforce a clear standard on where AEDs must be available, it becomes easier for people to recognise and locate them wherever they may be. 'We are exploring how it can be implemented in phases,' she said after the handover of an AED unit from Rotary Club of Ara Damansara to Masjid Al-Makmuriah in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara in Petaling Jaya. Jamaliah said Selangor was gathering feedback from all local councils, as each might have different processes and licensing requirements. The guidelines, she said, would apply to new buildings that fell under relevant categories, such as sports venues, public parks and places of worship. 'There have been many incidents that occur in private sports venues such as pickleball and badminton courts, so we want safety measures like AED installation to be in place. 'Heart attacks remain the leading cause of death in Malaysia. 'Every minute without cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or AED assistance reduces survival chances by about 7%.' Stating that ambulances might take five to 10 minutes to arrive at the location of the emergency, she added: 'There needs to be an initiative to help the victim before the ambulance arrives.' Jamaliah thanked some commercial premises, such as malls, that have installed AEDs on their own initiative. An AED is a portable, battery-powered device that delivers an electric shock to a person in cardiac arrest, to resuscitate the heart into beating again. When used in conjunction with CPR, it can significantly increase the chances of survival. The handover ceremony also featured a demonstration of proper usage of AED along with CPR. Jamaliah, who is Bandar Utama assemblyman, said the mosque was an ideal location for the AED as it was a key gathering point for the community. Rotary Club of Ara Damansara president Siraanjivi Ganasan said the handover concluded its 'A Lifesaver in Every Home' programme, which sought to train more Malaysians in CPR and use of AEDs. Masjid Al-Makmuriah chairman Ustaz Mhd Nadzrui Mhd Tajudin said that in the spirit of National Day, it was a reminder that saving lives transcended religion or ethnicity.

MRC Miri's dialysis centre in urgent need of refurbishment, says Lee

MIRI (Aug 11): The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri branch is calling for public and corporate support to help upgrade its dialysis centre. It said that the facility, which currently serves over 300 patients in the division, requires a complete refurbishment and the total upgrade is expected to cost over RM4 million. The appeal was made during a Blood Donation and Organ Pledging Campaign at MRC Miri's headquarters here held in conjunction with World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin visited the campaign yesterday to show his support for the initiative. He noted the dialysis centre was in urgent need of refurbishment and equipment replacement. 'The centre has been operating for 30 years, and most of its facilities are no longer useable. We plan to replace all 36 machines and upgrade the centre,' he told reporters. He added the patients would be temporarily relocated to MRC Permyjaya's dialysis centre for treatment while the upgrading works are being carried out. All the patients can pay according to their means, with the rest subsidised through public and corporate support,' he said.
