Russians 'mock' US and peace process with latest attacks on Ukraine, EU ambassador says

Yahoo25-05-2025

Following a deadly overnight Russian attack on May 25, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova described the strikes as mocking diplomatic attempts at peace.
"Russians are relentlessly stepping up the pressure. Stepping up the terror against civilians," Mathernova wrote in a Facebook post. "The attacks are more intense and frequent. They laugh at the world!!! They mock the U.S. and mock any diplomatic attempt at peace. Peace? What peace?"
Russia launched 69 missiles and 298 drones overnight on May 25, according to Ukraine's Air Force. The attack killed 12 people, including three children, and injured more than 60, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said.
"How will the world react to Putin's terror and clear provocation? To his mockery of any ceasefire discussion? I must admit, I ask that myself," Mathernova wrote. "Putin is clearly after his stated goal, killing Ukrainians and forcing Ukraine into submission. Sadly, the only language he understands is the language of force."
President Volodymyr Zelensky, in response to the attacks, called for stronger sanctions on Russia and added that the silence from the U.S. and others "encourages Putin."
Representatives from Ukraine and Russia met recently in Istanbul on May 16, for the first direct talks between the two countries in three years. Though the Ukrainian team had pushed for an unconditional ceasefire, the discussions ceased without any apparent progress towards this goal.
Russia "categorically" rejected the appeal in Turkey, according to Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Serhiy Kyslytsia, who attended the talks as a member of the Ukrainian delegation.
After the talks concluded, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed on May 21 that Moscow had no interest in agreeing to a ceasefire in Ukraine, saying that Russia "doesn't want this anymore."
In response to the Russian attacks on May 24 and May 25, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) released a statement "deploring" the deadly new wave of attacks.
'With at least 78 people reported killed or injured across the country, last night's attack tragically demonstrates the persistent deadly risk to civilians of using powerful weapons in urban areas, including those far away from the frontline,' said Danielle Bell, Head of HRMMU.
'It is yet another addition to the staggering human toll this war continues to inflict on civilians, with more families across the country now grieving their losses.'
Since the start of its full-scale invasion, Russia has routinely used missiles and drones to strike Ukraine's civilian infrastructure.

Trump's New Love Letters Reportedly Rebuffed by Kim Jong Un

President Donald Trump is reportedly trying to reconnect with his old pen pal Kim Jong Un—but he's being bluntly rejected. North Korean diplomats have refused to accept a letter Trump wrote to the North Korean despot in hopes of reviving the bizarre rapport they had during his first term, NK News reported, citing a high-level source. The president famously said in 2018 that the two leaders 'fell in love' through their letter exchanges. 'We went back and forth, then we fell in love,' he said at the time. 'No, really! He wrote me beautiful letters. And they are great letters.' The White House has attempted to hand-deliver Trump's latest letter multiple times, but North Korean diplomats at the U.N. headquarters in New York have repeatedly rejected it, according to NK News. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the report during Wednesday's briefing, saying Trump 'remains receptive to correspondence' with Kim, but added, 'As for specific correspondence, I'll leave that for the president to answer.' In April, Trump claimed the U.S. was in 'communication' with the nuclear-armed country and said his administration would 'probably do something at some point.' Leavitt said Trump hopes to build on his June 2018 meeting with Kim in Singapore, where he became the only U.S. president to meet with a sitting North Korean leader. Following that first date, Trump met with the dictator twice more, making history again by becoming the first U.S. president inside the isolated country by taking 20 steps at the border between North and South Korea in June 2019. Their bromance, however, failed to deliver a hoped-for deal requiring North Korea to halt or dismantle its nuclear weapons program in return for sanctions relief, and Kim has continued to launch ballistic missile tests. In fact, Kim may have less incentive to thaw relations with the U.S., as North Korea has grown closer to traditional American adversaries. It's struggling economy is supported by China, while Russia has also provided economic aid in exchange for thousands of North Korean troops deployed to back Russian forces in Ukraine.

Russia boasts world's top nuclear force, must improve ground forces, Putin claims

Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Moscow possesses the world's most advanced nuclear systems but must significantly strengthen its ground forces, Russian state media reported on June 11. As Russia continues its war against Ukraine, Moscow has increased investment in its military. Russian defense spending has reached its highest level since the Cold War at 6.3% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Putin claimed that Russia's nuclear triad has the highest share of new equipment among nuclear powers. "Currently, the share of modern weapons and equipment in the strategic nuclear forces is already 95%. This is a good indicator, in fact, it is the highest of all nuclear powers in the world," Russian state media reported Putin saying. Putin then called for Russia's ground forces to be improved as quickly as possible. "The dominant force in conducting modern military operations of any scale and intensity remains the ground forces. And it is important to increase their combat capabilities in the shortest possible time," he said. Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Russia first began its armed aggression against Ukraine in 2014, when its proxies occupied territory in eastern Ukraine and Russia annexed Crimea. Russia regularly strikes civilian infrastructure in its ongoing war against Ukraine. On June 11, a Russian drone attack on Kharkiv killed at least three people and injured 64 others. Trump 'gold card' website opens. Here's how to join the $5 million waitlist

Trump 'gold card' website opens. Here's how to join the $5 million waitlist Show Caption Hide Caption Trump wants to sell $5 million 'gold cards' as path to citizenship President Donald Trump says he wants to offer wealthy immigrants "gold cards" that would give a pathway to citizenship in exchange for a $5 million purchase price. President Donald Trump's long-touted "gold card," which offers foreigners a path to U.S. citizenship after paying $5 million to the government, is open for business. But even if you have the money, there's a waitlist at And read the fine print carefully: Your $5 million doesn't buy you immediate citizenship. Trump has said that he is not seeking approval from Congress as he is not providing gold card buyers with citizenship - only a path to citizenship. The path to citizenship requirements for card buyers are unclear and White House officials have said more details will be provided soon. The most common path to U.S. citizenship through naturalization is being a lawful permanent resident for at least five years. It requires the applicant to be least 18 years old when they apply, be able to read, write, and speak basic English (depending on age) and be of "good moral character." Trump has described the card, which he has also dubbed the Trump card, as 'somewhat like a green card, but at a higher level of sophistication.' 'FOR FIVE MILLION $DOLLARS, THE TRUMP CARD IS COMING!,' President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on June 11. 'Thousands have been calling and asking how they can sign up to ride a beautiful road in gaining access to the Greatest Country and Market anywhere in the World.' The website shows an image of the gold-colored card, emblazoned with a likeness of Trump's face, and asks a few questions including name, region, email address and if an applicant is applying for themselves or as a business. The new website asks interested people to fill out a form that specifies eight regions: Europe, Asia (including Middle East), North America, Oceania, Central America, South America, Caribbean and Africa. Other countries also offer immigration programs that offers permanent residency or citizenship to foreign investors in exchange for investment. Portugal, for example, offers residency and a path to EU citizenship after five years. When he first floated the idea in February, Trump said the card would replace the "EB-5" immigrant investor green card visa program, The EB-5 visa allows immigrant investors the option to invest between $800,000 and $1.05 million to obtain a green card. The investment money is used to help create or preserve U.S. jobs. 'Wealthy people will be coming into our country by buying this card,' Trump said in February. 'They'll be wealthy, and they'll be successful, and they'll be spending a lot of money, and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people.' 'It's a road to citizenship for people and essentially people of wealth or people of great talent where people of wealth pay for those people of talent to get in,' he said.
