Monster Energy's Ayumu Hirano and Gaon Choi Claim Podium Spots at the Inaugural Snow League Competition in Aspen Snowmass
26-Year-Old Hirano from Japan Takes 3rd Place in Men's Snowboard Halfpipe
16-Year-Old Choi from South Korea Claims 3rd Place in Women's Snowboard Halfpipe
ASPEN, Colo., March 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Monster Energy congratulates Ayumu Hirano on taking third place in Men's Snowboard Halfpipe at the Snow League competition in Aspen Snowmass. In the snowboard contest hosted by snow sports icon Shaun White, the 26-year-old from Murakami, Japan, claimed a podium spot in an elite field of invited riders. Also rising to the podium, 16-year-old Gaon Choi from Seoul, South Korea, took third place in the Women's Snowboard Halfpipe competition.
From March 7-8, Buttermilk Resort hosted the first installment of the new Snow League snowboard halfpipe contest series created by snowboard icon Shaun White. For two action-packed days, the event featured 36 riders from across the globe battling for the top spots and tour points in a global ranking system.
Contested on the Superpipe on Buttermilk Mountain, the competition was broadcast in 90 countries. Fans tuning in across the United States could follow the event live on Peacock via NBC Sports.
In the Men's Halfpipe final, Ayumu Hirano competed in a field of eight finalists from Friday's qualifiers. The finals pitted athlete against athlete in a best two of three run, head-to-head format. According to Snow League rules, each athlete must drop into both the right and left-hand walls of the halfpipe in their first two runs. The first athlete to win two runs will advance to the next round, and ultimately, the rider that wins each of their head-to-head matchups claims the win.
In the battle for third place, Hirano faced American Alessandro Barbieri. Hirano put down a perfect run featuring his signature frontside triple cork 1440, Cab 1440, huge method crippler, and backside 1260 and frontside double cork 1080 to claim third place.
The Women's Halfpipe final saw Gaon Choi claim her podium spot in the battle for third place against Ono Mitsuki from Japan. Standout tricks, including switch backside 900 Weddle, Cab 720, and frontside 1080 earned Choi the upper hand in the head-to-head battle for third place.
What's next? Additional Snow League events will be contested at China's Secret Garden (4-6 December 2025), Aspen (26-28 February 2026), and Switzerland (19-21 March 2026). At the end of the season, rankings will determine the first Snow League World Champion. Stay tuned!

And will the youngest competitor on the roster, 24-year-old Australian Ben Richards, finally rise to the X Games podium? The final day of X Games in Osaka starts with the BMX Street event – and a stacked Monster Energy roster: After sweeping the podium in the discipline at X Games Ventura 2024, gold medal winner Kevin Peraza, silver medalist Jordan Godwin from Cardiff, Wales, and bronze medalist Lewis Mills from Terrey Hills, Australia, are back for more. German tech pioneer Felix Prangenberg comes in hungry after settling for fourth place at X Games Chiba 2024. He will duel with 2023 gold medalist Boyd Hilder from Australia. Anything can happen! Next on the agenda, X Games Osaka will throw it back to a classic event with BMX Flatland. Wildly popular in Japan, the discipline showcases BMX athletes performing tricks on a flat surface without obstacles or jumps. Monster Energy team rider Moto Sasaki from Chiba is an icon of the scene and previous bronze medal winner. Don't miss this masterclass in style and effortless flow! Speaking of mastery, prepare for the bar to be raised in the Men's Skateboard Vert Best Trick final. Dropping in with new tricks up his sleeve, three-time Best Trick gold medalist Elliot Sloan comes in hungry for the next medal after closely missing the podium at X Games Chiba 2024. Then again, Moto Shibata did land on the podium at Chiba 2024 by taking home silver and is back for more. And let's keep in mind that Tom Schaar from Malibu just dropped a next-level video part for Thrasher magazine and has the right tricks to earn precious metal. Don't miss it! Stay tuned for the Women's Skateboard Park final to see defending gold medalist Arisa Trew aiming for her second gold medal of the weekend. Her biggest rival? That's Olympic silver medalist and X Games champion Cocona Hiraki from Hokkaido, Japan. Keeping the progression going at X Games Osaka 2025, the Men's Skateboard Street final is gearing up for an unforgettable showdown: Brazilian powerhouse and Olympic silver medalist Kelvin Hoefler had to settle for fourth place at X Games Chiba 2024 – and wants back into the top three. He's up against two Japanese young guns: 18-year-old X Games silver medalist Daiki Ikeda from Tokyo and 18-year-old Toa Sasaki from Mie, Japan, who shook the system by winning the World Skate Games Italy 2024. For another wild card, look no further than 15-year-old Julian Agliardi from Long Beach, California, winner of the 2024 Mystik Sk8 Cup and ready for his first X Games podium! Ending the fourth edition of X Games in Japan with a banger, make sure to catch the Men's Skateboard Park contest. The action will unfold with Tom Schaar dropping in as the defending gold medalist from X Games Chiba 2024. Prepare for a head-to-head competition as last year's silver medalist, 21-year-old Kieran Woolley from Kiama Downs, Australia, brings his latest tricks to the park course in Osaka. Concerning Rory McIlroy News Emerges Ahead of U.S. Open
Concerning Rory McIlroy News Emerges Ahead of U.S. Open originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The U.S. Open 2025 is one of the most anticipated majors of the year, set to begin on Thursday, June 12, at the iconic Oakmont Country Club. Known for its brutal, rough and fast greens, Oakmont promises a real test for the world's best golfers. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the field, with other big names like Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, and Rory McIlroy ready to compete for glory. Advertisement But just days before the tournament, worrying news has surfaced around McIlroy. According to sources Kira Dixon, McIlroy has been undergoing extensive driver testing following a missed cut at the RBC Canadian Open. He had switched to a shorter driver in Canada but hit only 46% of fairways. Now, he's moved back to the TaylorMade Qi10, the model he used before experimenting with the Qi35. Rory Mcilroy watches his tee shot on the third hole during the second round of the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament. Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images This isn't the first time McIlroy's driver setup has caused issues. A failed driver change also hurt his performance at the PGA Championship. With the U.S. Open around the corner, the five-time major winner is still searching for the right gear far from ideal with such a demanding course ahead. McIlroy, who recently completed his career Grand Slam, will be grouped with Shane Lowry and Justin Rose for the opening rounds two players currently in fine form. Meanwhile, DeChambeau returns as the defending champion, aiming to repeat his Oakmont magic from last year. The tournament will be broadcast across NBC platforms, including Peacock and USA Network, with coverage starting early each day. With the field stacked and conditions tough, every detail matters and for McIlroy, the uncertainty around his driver could be a critical setback in his chase for another major.
