The Irish Independent's View: Duty calls for Paschal Donohoe whose Eurogroup role is worth its weight in gold to us

The Finance Minister was speaking at the Centre for Financial Studies of the Goethe University in Frankfurt, on the topic of 'Shaping tomorrow and navigating uncertainty: the future of the euro area'. Given Donohoe is the current president of the Eurogroup, his views are keenly observed by the finance ministers of the 20 countries that use the euro. In his address, Donohoe posed the question of why it is, at a time of rising populism, polarisation and fragmentation, that people increasingly trust the euro. He put it down to 'convenience, co-ordination, and confidence'. 'The euro is a powerful symbol of our shared sovereignty. A powerful symbol that you can feel in your wallet, see in your purse. People have confidence in the euro because they know we will defend and support it. They know we will progress and develop it,' he said. The minister also set out his views on the need for the euro to continue to evolve, move forward and be ambitious. Despite having difficulty pronouncing the minister's first name, the chair of the Frankfurt event, former German central banker Professor Axel Weber, described Donohoe as the 'prime European finance diplomat.' 'You are not just a co-ordinator of your colleagues in finance and budget. You are the prime European finance diplomat. You really showed that you have a diplomatic skill in talking about the eurozone. 'We all appreciate that and I think it is the right focus. Europe needs to grow out of its own strengths, rather than the weakness of others. And I think that is a very well received but also worthy message to deliver.' It's no coincidence Donohoe is upping his profile on the European stage at this time. His second term as Eurogroup president ends next month and the vote on who will take up the role for the next two-and-a-half years is due at the end of the month. He seems intent on a third term and nobody seems to be in any position to take him on as he is so well-regarded. Indeed, he is also among the favourites to become the European Central Bank president when Christine Lagarde's term ends in two years' time. Donohoe's relationships with EU leaders are not just about personal career advancement. His eurozone networking is worth its weight in gold to Ireland as it places us at the heart of EU economic policy-making, perhaps not making the decisions, but at the very least having an influence on powerbrokers' deliberations. Donohoe's 'duty' to take up a third term will benefit Ireland's standing amongst our EU partners.

Liverpool close in on Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz with new record bid

Bayer Leverkusen are believed to want £150m for the Germany international, who would prefer a move to Anfield. Liverpool's initial proposal came to £109m, including add-ons, but they have now submitted an improved offer with a greater guarantee of £100m. Wirtz also attracted attention from Bayern Munich but told the German champions he wanted to go to Liverpool. The new English champions are believed to have impressed him with their plan while Manchester City, who also showed an interest, have switched their focus to Tijjani Reijnders of AC Milan and Lyon's Rayan Cherki. At £113m, Wirtz would smash Liverpool's transfer record. They paid £75m for Virgil van Dijk and £64m, rising to £85m, for Darwin Nunez. Wirtz, who found the net for Germany against Portugal in the Nations League on Wednesday, has scored 34 goals in the last two seasons for Leverkusen, helping them win a first league title in 2023-24, when he was named the Bundesliga Player of the Year. Liverpool have already signed his Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong for £29m as they begin life after Trent Alexander-Arnold. They are also in talks with Bournemouth, who want £45m for left-back Milos Kerkez, and could commit almost £200m to new signings within a few weeks.

Trump refuses to speak to Musk after he 'lost his mind' as fiery feud continues

U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that he's "not particularly" interested in talking to the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency after the two had a public spat. Speaking with ABC News, the president told ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl that he didn't want to talk to his former pal . "You mean the man who has lost his mind," Trump said. According to Trump , he was "not particularly" interested in speaking to Musk at the moment. It was also reported that Trump issued a statement to CNN saying, 'I'm not even thinking about Elon. He's got a problem. The poor guy's got a problem." When asked whether or not he plans to talk to the tech mogul Trump stated,'No. I won't be speaking to him for a while I guess, but I wish him well.' The president's comments are a stark contrast to his earlier lambasting of Musk during his meeting with the German Chancellor yesterday. Several Republican allies attempted to ease the tensions between the two. Earlier in the day, the billionaire raged that the cost of legislation is projected to add $2.4 trillion to the deficit (Image: AFP via Getty Images) "I support @realDonaldTrump and @elonmusk and they should make peace for the benefit of our great country," hedge fund manager Bill Ackman wrote. Musk then retweeted the post, writing, "You're not wrong.' Earlier in the day, the billionaire raged that the cost of legislation is projected to add $2.4 trillion to the deficit. At the alleged urging of his aides, Trump tempered the verbiage of his posts. The outlet stated that aides told Trump to focus on the bill and getting it through the Senate instead of his conflict with the X CEO. (Image: AFP via Getty Images) The telling off from MAGA allies came almost two hours after Musk attacked the president on his own social media site, X. "Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave," Trump wrote in the first post. "[I] took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!" Trump then doubled down on his comments in a second , but equally fiery post. "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts," he added. "I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!" This barrage against the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency did not sit well with many people on the MAGA site. Many of the users were spotted commenting on the post, saying that it was "not a good look" for the president. "Elon Musk helped to save our Republic last election cycle," one person commented. "Please stop this war of words between the two of you. If memory serves me correctly, something similar happened in Trump's first term with Elon." "You should fix this with a phone call, not through media," a second person commented. "Why are you picking a fight with one of your best allies. So stupid," a third person stated. "I wish President Trump and Musk would not trade public barbs like this," a fourth person pleaded. "It diminishes both of your accomplishments and makes you look like high school girls in a social media fight. Please, guys. Rein it in. We are so proud of you, both of you!"
