Jaipur: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed construction of the Jaipur-Bandikui Expressway Link and will open it for traffic soon. With this link road, commuters can travel between Delhi and Jaipur within 3 to 3.5 hours.
Speaking to TOI, BS Yadav, project director of NHAI (Dausa PIU), stated that the road is already constructed and ready to use. The authority is now waiting for a series of safety audits and the final nod from the headquarters.
"Following the accident on the Ajmer Road in Dec 2024, we don't want to take any risk. Safety is our priority. The safety audits are ongoing. Once we forward the report, the headquarters will announce the dates.
We cannot reveal the exact date now, but this link road will open for traffic very soon," Yadav told TOI.
Once it opens, vehicles from Jaipur (coming from Rotary Circle) will take a slip lane at the Bagrana crossing to reach this linkway. On the other hand, traffic from the Ring Road will take a ramp of the cloverleaf and land on this linkway.
Similarly, vehicles coming from the Bandikui side through this linkway will take an elevated ramp.

The ramp of this cloverleaf has two exits - one for the Jaipur-bound flank of the Agra Road and the second for the Ring Road.
NHAI officials claimed that this stretch will help vehicles travel between Jaipur and the entry and exit points of the DND (Delhi-Noida Direct) Flyway in 2.5 hours. However, it may take another 30 to 45 minutes to reach the Railway Station or the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Officials said the last missing link of this greenfield project was a ROB (Railway Overbridge). NHAI earlier planned to allow traffic on this road by the end of April by creating a small diversion in the absence of this ROB.
"But we did not find the option safe and viable. Instead, we focused on constructing the ROB as fast as possible. We completed the ROB maintaining all safety standards," added Yadav.

Declared free for use, SoBo parking lots still charging motorists
Mumbai: Days after nine parking lots in south Mumbai were declared free for public use following the expiry of their contracts, several motorists find themselves being charged at the sites. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A check at six of these parking spots by TOI revealed that four are still collecting parking fees from unsuspecting drivers. At Walchand Hirachand Marg in Ballard Estate (the stretch between Grand Hotel & Scindia House), motorists are being charged Rs 50 an hour. At Ramjibhai Kamani Marg and Nagindas Master Lane, the rate is Rs 70 per hour. Horniman Circle (between V N Road and Homji Street) too had fee collectors asking for Rs 70 an hour. Parking at Badruddin Tyabji Marg and Dorabji Tata Marg is, however, free. "This is ridiculous. I parked near Horniman Circle thinking it was free, and then a person shows up and asks for Rs 140 for 2 hours," a motorist who drives to Fort daily said. Angered over having been charged Rs 140 for 2 hours of parking near Horniman Circle, a motorist said, "There was no board, no clarity. Just a random person demanding that I pay." Another motorist said, "I paid Rs 70 at Nagindas Master Lane yesterday (Sunday). There was a person who said he was authorised to collect it. I had no way to verify, and I was in a rush." When contacted, a senior BMC official said, "Generally, after the surrender of a site, we send an intimation to the police station concerned and traffic division to keep the location under watch. However, considering the concern raised today about illegal fee collection, we will send a fresh reminder to them tomorrow." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The official added the 3-month extension for these sites lapsed on May 31, and in the interim, motorists were not supposed to be charged. "We are in the process of appointing a new agencies either for a 3-month period or a fresh two-year contract through the office of the deputy chief engineer (traffic). These sites are temporarily free until then," he said. Former Colaba corporator Makrand Narwekar slammed the situation. "The ward where all these parking lots are located is a high footfall area with many tourists and heritage sites. For too long, motorists have suffered due to the unholy nexus between officials and contractors. It's unacceptable that people are being asked to pay for services that have no legal backing," he said. On May 6, after receiving numerous complaints from residents, Narwekar wrote to the municipal commissioner demanding that pay-and-park facilities be made free once the existing parking contracts expire. "The civic body was taking action against engineers and had conducted sting operations to expose overcharging. If those allegations were true, then why is BMC allowing these illegal operations to continue?" he said.

PWD to build 400 toilets along state highways; seeks CSR funds
1 2 Pune: The Public Works Department (PWD) plans to establish around 400 wayside hubs with restrooms and eateries across a 1 lakh kilometre road network in the state in the next two to three months. The department aims to address the acute shortage of restroom facilities along highways. Authorities have decided to leverage Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aid instead of seeking state funds. "We will not seek state funds but partner with private entities interested in the construction, operations, and maintenance of the facilities. We are also in discussion with self-help groups regarding year-round maintenance of these facilities," a senior PWD official said. The decision came after the Bombay high court, in April this year, directed the state govt while hearing a PIL filed by a city-based activist highlighting the lack of toilets on state highways, despite assurances of constructing 400 toilets. The petitioner approached the high court against PWD and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd. (MSRDC), seeking directions for adequate toilet facilities along state highways and the Mumbai-Pune expressway, claiming that such facilities are basic and essential for journeys of two to four hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Undo The department has identified crucial locations across all districts and the facilities have been planned 30-40km apart. TOI had previously highlighted the shortage of restroom facilities along highways. PWD is now developing a comprehensive mapping strategy to ensure sufficient coverage and enhance journey comfort while addressing crucial infrastructure gaps on state highways. "Wayside amenities are vital as people struggle to locate such facilities on lengthy highway stretches. While the road network expands, basic infrastructure development lags," said Megha Sonawane, a regular biker who raised this issue with the state govt through emails and social media. "Construction of such toilets would particularly benefit women travellers," she said. The sustainability model involves nominal user charges, while some facilities would operate eateries to offset maintenance costs. Around 8-10 such facilities have been planned in each district on major roads. While some facilities are already operational, notably near Ekvira Temple in Karla near Lonavla, sites for other similar facilities are being finalised. In order to help travellers locate the toilet facilities, the PWD plans to develop a mobile application — either integrated with Google Maps or as a standalone app. Regular commuters have, however, expressed concerns about previously announced facilities that often deteriorate without proper maintenance. Activists championing improved toilet conditions emphasised the necessity of third-party inspections for construction and maintenance to ensure proper standards. "Mere construction will not help. There should be a continuous effort made by the state and agencies to maintain these services well," said Seema Mohopatra, a regular traveller and activist. "Toilet facilities are available at Khalapur and Talegaon toll plazas and petrol pumps on the Pune-Mumbai expressway. With expressway expansion planned, three to four additional toilets will be built along the route," an MSRDC official said.
